Work Experience (P1P2) Progress Report June 2023

The learner thanks their employer for the opportunity to complete their experiential learning at an effluent plant, where they have learned to operate scrubber systems, filter presses, and water treatment processes to purify process water and recover products. The learner faced challenges in learning extensive technical information and dealing with a filter press fire, but has grown professionally and can now competently perform tasks like water sampling.

CHALLENGES EXPERIENCED AND MANNER OF RESOLUTION)

I would like to thank Impala Platinum Refineries for giving me an opportunity to do my

experiential learning with them. It has been a journey and I have grown so much professionally. I
have completed my modules for PMR and I am competent in all safety related trainings. I have the
capability to operate all scrubber systems and do troubleshooting whenever there is anomalies in the
system.
I am currently stationed at the effluent plant which is the downstream process of the PMR
operations. The effluent plant in general it deals with the purification of process water and product
recovery in the effluent. The water treatment aims to removes all contaminants found in the effluent
to achieve good water quality standards outline in the Water Act. Mine water contamination
generally falls into the following categories in terms of effect on the environment: acidity and low
pH, dissolved metals (Fe, Mn, Al, As, Cr, Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, Hg, Pb, etc), radionuclides (U, Ra, Th,
Po, etc), turbidity/suspended solids, salinity (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl And SO4 ), nutrients (ammonia,

nitrate, phosphate), oxygen demand (organics), and aesthetics.
I have learned to conduct a start-up and shutdown of the effluent plant, operate the filter press, start
and stop the filter air blower, pre-coating of filter press, cleaning the filter press, control and
monitoring the flow meter and fume extraction, take sample of the final effluent.
One of the challenges I faced during this time was there’s so much technical information to learn
especially in plant operation. However, the procedure manual that was given to me by my trainer
has assisted me to learn the process quicker and understand why each measure was implemented
and its effect on the process.
Another challenge I dealt with was with the filter press which caught fire that resulted in the
damage of the filter bags. Investigations have concluded that the potential ignition sources were
sparks and spontaneous combustion of the dried up solids (spontaneous combustion arising from
accumulation of reactive components of dust in the bag filter). The damaged equipment was
replaced or repaired. The engineering department have installed equipment to detect a smoulder fire
before extensive damage is done. When a bag filter is damaged by fire, high costs are usually
incurred. Quite apart from this, unfavourable attention is drawn to an industry that is under
increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact. This is a strong motivation to the team to
ensure that measures are in place to prevent incidence of bag filter fires.
