Preface
B-1. BACKGROUND
The concern over the depletion of fossil fuels and the emission of pollutants and greenhouse gases associated with their
combustion can be addressed by (1) using renewable energy sources to replace fossil fuels and (2) becoming more efficient in
energy production, distribution, and consumption so that less fuel is used to obtain the same useful output.

We are familiar with fossil fuels as our primary energy resources. But the time has come to establish energy efficiency as an
important energy resource. Energy efficiency is already being touted as the "sixth fuel" after coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear energy,
and renewable energy. Energy efficiency is also the cheapest resource: The cost of electricity obtained from energy efficiency is
usually between 1 and 3 cents (US) per kWh. Further, energy efficiency is local and labor intensive, with significant benefits to
the environment from a reduction of pollution. Energy efficiency and energy management cannot be separated from each other;
the main pillar of any energy management program is the efficient and rational use of energy.

B-2. THIS BOOK

The number of books that have been written on energy efficiency and management are limited, and most concentrate on
providing general guidance for practicing engineers and the public. This book is primarily intended to be a textbook for an
upper-level undergraduate or early graduate-level course for all relevant engineering majors. It may also be used as a
convenient reference book for engineers, policy makers, and everyone interested in the subject. It describes both the
foundations and the practice of energy efficiency and energy management. Thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics,
and thermochemistry background information needed for any energy efficiency measure is provided here, and thus the need for
prerequisite courses is greatly minimized. This allows this book to be used by a variety of engineering majors since not all
students may have a thermal science background. The coverage of principles and practices in this text enable readers to
develop a full understanding of how and why energy is saved by using certain measures.

B-3. OVERVIEW OF TOPICS

The book covers all fundamentals areas of energy efficiency, including both thermal and electrical systems and both industrial
and building applications. It contains many practical examples and end-of-chapter problems as well as conceptual and
multiple-choice questions, much more than any other book on the subject. The first two chapters cover the importance of
energy efficiency and energy management and audit principles. Chapter 3 offers a comprehensive review of thermal science
principles needed for studying energy efficiency and management, including thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics,
thermochemistry, refrigerators, and power plants. Chapters 4 through 10 concentrate primarily on thermal systems, on
including cogeneration, boilers and steam systems, heat recovery, thermal insulation, heating and cooling of buildings, and
windows and infiltration. Chapters 11 through 13 focus on systems that consume energy in the form of electricity, including
electric motors, compressors and compressed air lines, and lighting systems. Chapter 14 covers energy conservation with
home appliances, water consumption, and automobiles. Chapters 15 and 16 present an engineering economic analysis of
energy efficiency projects and describe the environmental effects of energy use.

B-4. FEATURED IN THE BOOK
A comprehensive review of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermochemistry, power plants, and
refrigeration systems

Fundamentals on energy efficiency projects for both thermal and electrical systems

Comprehensive coverage of energy management principles and applications

Coverage of both industrial and building energy efficiency applications

Rigorous description and analysis of energy efficiency systems and applications, including concepts, formulations, and
practical examples

Approximately 100 worked-out example problems

Approximately 1400 end-of-chapter problems, including conceptual and multiple-choice questions

B-5. UNIT SYSTEM

In recognition of the fact that English units are still widely used in some industries, both SI and English units are used in this
text, with an emphasis on SI. The material in this text can be covered using combined SI/English units or SI units alone,
depending on the preference of the instructor. The property tables and charts in the appendices are presented in both unit
systems.

B-6. RESOURCES FOR THE INSTRUCTOR

Access to the book's website with all of the resources of the book

PowerPoint lecture slides for all chapters

PDF files of the solutions manual for end-of-chapter problems

B-7. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The authors would like to acknowledge with appreciation the many and valuable comments, suggestions, constructive
criticisms, and words of praise they have received from students and colleagues. Special thanks go to Dr. Önder Kaşka, Dr.
Mehmet Fatih Orhan, Dr. Ceyhun Yilmaz, and Tuğberk Hakan Çetin for their help in the preparation and checking of the
manuscript and solutions manual. We would like to express our appreciation to our families for their continued patience,
understanding, inspiration, and support throughout the preparation of this text.
