TAN - MMW Assignment #1

The document is a student's assignment submission for a course. It includes: 1) Watching two educational videos about mathematics - one on patterns in nature/universe, the other on the history and role of math. 2) Reflecting on the videos by considering how they interested or bothered the student, and what was realized from watching. The student summarizes realizing how prevalent patterns are, math's role in survival/forecasting, and how ancient cultures used math innovatively in architecture, measurement, and games. Overall, the student was intrigued by the videos and amazed at math's connections to areas one might not expect.

ASSIGNMENT #1

Submitted by: Ara Mikaela C. Tan

Course and Section: BSIE 1-2

1. Video watching:
a. Science Documentary 2016: The Math Mystery Mathematics in Nature and Universe.
YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl1N7i5ra7Y

b. Watch in YouTube “The Story of Math. The Language of the Universe”

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7t6f4t

2. After watching the above videos, assignment no. 1 shall be posted in the MS Teams where
your answers and reactions shall be encoded and recorded.

You will be asked to make your reaction/reflection by considering the following statements:

• Share your impression and experiences.

• Did the video interest you or bother you? Why or why not?
Both of the videos really catched my attention especially at the start, I was amazed by
everything they flashed on the screen.
• What did you realize after watching?
After watching both of the videos, I realized a lot of things.

My first impressions when I saw both of the videos are that they are quite long. It will take
almost two hours of my time before I could finish it, so I find that challenging considering that I
have a short attention span.My experiences in watching both of those videos are that I’m actually
enjoying it. At first I thought it would be boring and just full of information but it proved me
wrong. Both of the videos piqued my interests since I’m also a person who is always curious
about everything. Another thing, I’m quite intrigued by the titles of the videos especially of the
word “Mystery” in the first video and I’m quite curious why does the second title say that the
story of math is the language of the universe? Those questions started to come to my mind.

After watching both of the videos, I have realized a lot of things. Starting from the first video
which is the documentary with the Astrophysicist Mario Livio along with the other
mathematicians, physicists, and many more that contributed with that amazing video. I have
realized that patterns are really all around us, for example in humans, animals, things like art,
etc. Before people actually believed that patterns in the stars called constellations could predict
or control our destiny. I’ve also come to realize that even jazz music can be mathematical.
Another main realization for me is that mathematics is a tool for survival. It also discussed the
laws of gravity, about how mathematics is involved in a weather forecast and many more.
While in the second video as Prof. Marcus De Sautoy visits different countries like Egypt,
Mesopotamia, and greece. I have realized how clever Egyptians are to use their body for
measuring. They are also great at problem solving. The documentary really showed how great
structures like the pyramids in Egypt and the structures in Greece are created with the help of
Mathematics. It wouldn’t be a success without it. It also said that Babylonians were the first one
to create zero and also the first one to use symmetrical dice in board games. In both videos, they
mention how a cube is earth, a tetrahedron is fire, an octahedron is air, an icosahedron is water,
and a dodecahedron is the universe. Overall, I’m truly amazed with how everything is connected
to mathematics, even the things I least expected.
