ESTABLISHING PARTNERSHIPS
The goal is to establish a partnership between a non-profit
professional organization and your student organization. You are an
officer of a student organization. The target audience are the board
members of a non-profit professional organization. You need to
convince a non-profit professional organization that a partnership
with your current student organization will be beneficial for both
parties. You need to create a presentation that will explain what your
student organization is about and how a partnership with a non-profit
organization will be advantageous to both organizations.

TARGET SKILLS:
 Identifying the purpose of a specific ICT tool
 Identifying which ICT tool/s can be useful in a given scenario
 Identifying how an ICT tool can be useful in a specific
professional track
 Manipulating and operating a useful ICT tool for a specific
professional track

TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

What is Information and Communications Technology?

Information and Communications Technology(ICT) refers to the use
of any means of technology to perform access, process, and
computation of data or any means communications. ICT covers
various technologies ranging from hardware (communication
devices, workstations, servers, databases, routers, switches, hubs,
wireless access points, etc.) to software (applications, operating
systems, etc.) being used today in various fields of expertise,
including but not limited to: healthcare, education, corporate,
military, and public services.

WHY DO WE NEED TO STUDY ICT?

Advanced technologies are useful and important; they make

things easier, help people be more productive, and make
information more accessible, thereby making knowledge more
available to everyone. Generally, technological innovations make
our lives more convenient but without the proper knowledge of
using these technologies to our advantage, can result in counter-
productivity.
TECHNOKIDS INC. 3
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

In order to put the technologies into right use to increase our daily
productivity, we need to learn what they are, how they work, and
how to properly utilize them to make them “work” for us, instead of
us “working” for them.

Most industries today use ICT to increase their overall productivity.

Some organizations even acknowledge exceptionally ICT-skilled
individuals because we are now living in the digital age, and in
digital age, information means asset. In fact, the ICT providers
themselves are also constantly evolving to cope up with the
demands of the market for a more advanced technology.

INTRODUCTION TO WORLD WIDE WEB

Every day, we encounter different kinds of ICT tools. These tools

are there to aid and assist us in performing our tasks faster and
more accurately. One of the most common ICT we encounter in
our daily lives is the World Wide Web (WWW, W3, or simply “web”).

WHAT IS WORLD WIDE WEB?

People often think that World Wide Web (to be referred as “Web”
in the later part of this document) and Internet are the same thing.
However, this is a big misconception. The Web and the Internet are
two different things.

4 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INTERNET AND WEB

The Internet is an infrastructure that connects users together. These

users may range from companies like Google, Facebook, and
Twitter to end-users like you and me. The Web, on the other hand,
is a huge collection of information, data, and resources that
facilitates communication between users and computers. The Web
uses the Internet as its medium to transfer or exchange data with
remote users. The Web also uses a client-server model to manage
the traffic.

WHAT IS A CLIENT-SERVER MODEL?

When we search in Google,

we usually type the query into
the search box and hit
“Enter”. When we hit “Enter”,
a request that contains our
query is sent from our
computer to the server of
Google. When Google
receives the query, it
searches its database for
matching results and sends
the result as a response to our
requests. In this case, we, who
sent request, is the client, and
Google, which responds to
our requests, is the server.

The Client-Server Model is a networking model where the client

requests resources from the server. The clients are usually connected
to the server via network infrastructures like Local Area Network, Wide
Area Network, or the Internet. In the context of Web, the client is the
user, and the server is the Web server.

TECHNOKIDS INC. 5

EVOLUTION OF WEB

Throughout the years, Web has been constantly improving to suit

the needs of the users. Back in the day, users can only view content
from websites but cannot interact with the content. As technology
innovates, websites are smarter and more user-friendly than it was
in the 90’s.

Identifying the Purpose of a Specific ICT Tool

In order to know if an ICT tool can be useful in a specific professional
track, the student needs to know the purpose of the ICT Tool. Students
need to be independent in searching and identifying the purpose of
a specific ICT tool.

Individual Activity: The purpose of this activity is to identify the

student’s initial knowledge of the given concepts. No prior research
is required to do this activity.

WEB 1.0

Illustration of Web 1.0 Architecture

In 1989, the Father of World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee, proposed the
creation of a standardized information management system, which
eventually gave rise to Web 1.0. Webpages based on the Web 1.0
are static pages, meaning users cannot interact with the page and
the page is in read-only format. It delivers content in a single direction,
where in the site owner is always the contributor, and the users are
always the audience.

WHERE CAN I FIND WEB 1.0?

Today, Web 1.0 can only be found on static pages like directory
pages, official homepages, and media front pages.

WHEN SHOULD I USE WEB 1.0?

Web 1.0 can be used when creating static web pages such as
homepage or any page which is intended only deliver contents to
the users.
Trivia:

 Did you know that back in the day, search engines like Yahoo!
have directory pages containing links to different sites?

 Due to the nature of Web 1.0 (uploading content to the web

and pushing it to the user), media companies like BBC and CNN
are able to go online.
10 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

WEB 2.0

The Transformation of Web 1.0 to 2.0

In 2004, Tim O’Reilly said, in his official site, that Web 2.0 is a Web that
“Build applications that harness network effects to get better the
more people use them.” (http://radar.oreilly.com/) In fact, the most
noticeable change from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 is that Web 2.0 is more
dynamic. This means that the site owner no longer dictates what the
content of the websites should be, instead, users contribute to the
contents. The importance of community is emphasized, as contrast
to companies deciding what to put as content to their web pages.
Users are encouraged to participate and contribute to the content
by commenting, sharing, tagging, etc. Web 2.0 is considered more
flexible compared to Web 1.0, hence, many of the websites today
use Web 2.0.

WHERE CAN I FIND WEB 2.0?

Most of the websites today use Web 2.0. Pages that require
contributions and interactions between users are mostly based on
Web 2.0. Blogs use Web 2.0 and encourage readers to contribute by
sharing, commenting, and bookmarking contents. File transfer
protocols like BitTorrent encourage users to share the resources they
TECHNOKIDS INC. 11
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

have to everyone across the internet by seeding the file. Wiki and
Forum users also contribute by writing contents and online classroom
platforms like Canvas by Instructure and Google Classroom utilize the
Web 2.0 to create a virtual classroom setting.

HOW SHOULD I UTILIZE WEB 2.0?

There are various uses of Web 2.0 in various facets of our daily lives. In
fact, all social media sites, blogging, file sharing, podcasting, voting
sites, forums, and web services, such as Google Docs and Microsoft
Office 360 use Web 2.0. In simpler terms, Web 2.0 is used when user
participation is needed on a web page.

Recap: What is the difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0?

Many of the known web services such as Google, Facebook,

YouTube, and Twitter are now transitioning from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0

WEB 3.0

Web 3.0 is the smarter version of Web that uses semantics, or more
commonly known as the science of meaning of language and
artificial intelligence, to optimize and personalize content display to
suit the needs and taste of the user.

WHERE CAN I FIND WEB 3.0?

Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Bing, social media sites such
as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or even news/media sites like CNN
and BBC utilize Web 3.0 to provide the user with richer personalized
content viewing experience and more accurate search results.

HOW SHOULD I UTILIZE WEB 3.0?

Web 3.0 can be used in search engine optimization to ensure fast

and accurate results. It can also be used to personalize display
contents so that the content displayed matches either the user’s

12 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

preference, or the user’s needs. This is normally used by social media

sites, e-commerce, and news/media companies to optimize the
content display of their websites.

Today, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 co-exist. While search engines, social
media sites, e-commerce, and news/media companies use Web 3.0
to optimize the search results and personalize the displayed contents,
many sites like forums, wikis, and file sharing sites still uses Web 2.0.

Recap: What is the difference between Web 1.0, Web 2.0, and Web
3.0? What are the advantages of Web 3.0 as compared to Web 1.0
and 2.0?

TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE

Technological convergence is the evolution of two or more different

technologies towards one, performing the same task but in a more
efficient way.

TECHNOKIDS INC. 13
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

The evolution of mobile phone.

A good example of technological convergence is our mobile phone.

During early days, mobile phones are big and bulky, and the price
are ridiculously high. Hence not everyone can afford one and some
are not willing to carry such big device around all the time. Not to
mention that the oldest mobile phones can only make calls, nothing
more. But as technology evolves, more and more features are added
to the device and its price became more and more affordable. They
eventually introduced the short message service (SMS) or more
commonly known as text messaging. Then the time came when we
could download and install applications in our mobile phones, and
have things like radio, video player, music player, and even television
integrated in them. Mobile phones also transformed from the key
padded ones to the touch screen devices today.

14 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

HOW FAR HAVE WE WENT THROUGH

TECHNOLOGICAL CONVERGENCE?

With technological convergence, people do not need to carry a

radio anymore to listen to radio channels. They can simply plug their
earphones to their phones and voila!: They can listen to any radio
channel they want. Back in the day, we use a tape player to play
music, then it evolved into more portable ones like Walkman and
MP3. Now, we can effortlessly listen to music using the applications in
our mobile devices.

Today, many technologies are converged in such way that with just
single device, you can pretty much do anything you need to. With
internet of things, we can easily control our appliances through
mobile phones. People can do so much more that fumble with
appliances with the help of a single device. e.g. phones today can
serve as phone, personal computer (in one way or another), video
player, music player, camera, scanner, gaming console, and a lot
more!

TECHNOKIDS INC. 15
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is an online platform where people and organizations

post statuses, upload pictures and videos, and interact with each
other. Social media are originally considered Web 2.0 based web
applications which feature user-generated contents. Well-known
social media applications such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,
Tumblr, and Google are transitioning to Web 3.0 due to the increased
demand of the market for a smarter web. Today, these well-known
social media applications offer outstanding user experience,
allowing users to personalize the displayed contents to match their
tastes, and optimize search functions for more accurate and faster
delivery of results.

As opposed to traditional media which delivers the content from one

source (the media company) to many receivers (the audiences),
social media has many sources (contributors) delivering contents to
many receivers (the audience). In social media, the source can be
the receiver at the same time and vice versa. Despite of social media
platform's high dependency on user-generated content, social
media companies are expected to moderate the contents and
perform content filtering, when necessary, to maintain the quality of
the contents. Most social media platforms have report abuse
functions that allow the users to report inappropriate contents to the
moderators.
16 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

HOW ARE PEOPLE UTILIZING SOCIAL MEDIA?

People utilize social media in different ways, some use social media
to make work easier. For example, when assigned with a group
report, students can use Google Docs to collaborate together and
work with the report simultaneously. Sites like YouTube, Spotify,
Instagram, and Pinterest are mostly used by people to share media
and entertainment while Facebook, Twitter, Gmail are mainly used
for communications. Some gamers even use YouTube or Twitch to do
video live streaming and raise funds for charities. Businesses also use
social media to promote their brand, products and services. While
there are also sites that allow the users to view and write reviews for
products and services like Zomato and Rotten Tomatoes.

MOBILE MEDIA

Mobile media is principally a versatile, personal, intelligent, and

internet-enabled platform (hand-held gadgets such as mobile
phones, tablets, smartwatches, and phablets) that allow its users to
connect with peers and exchange information. A good example of
this in real life scenario will be smartphones. Smart phones allow you
to send/receive files to/from your friends, connect with them through

TECHNOKIDS INC. 17
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

social media, and perform work/school-related tasks. In fact, one

feature of mobile media is that it allows its users to stay connected
24/7. Therefore, mobile media users can usually instantly connect with
anyone/anything when needed.

Like any other technology, when used correctly, mobile media can
help us maximize our productivity. However, if used in the wrong way,
it can dramatically reduce our productivity and waste our most
important resource -- time.

SO HOW CAN I UTILIZE MOBILE MEDIA?

There is a wide variety of mobile media application in real life

scenario, some of which include:

1. Social media applications

 Used to connect people together

2. News and information

 Used to deliver content and information to the user
 BBC, CNN, Cracked, Reddit

3. Games
 Used to entertain people, can also serve more function
such as rehabilitation and education aside from providing
entertainment
 Lightbot, Angry Birds, Jintronix: Kinect rehabilitation
software

4. Culture and Entertainment

 Used to spread culture and provide entertainment
 YouTube, Britain’s Got Talent App

5. Online shopping
 Used by users to shop online
 Amazon, eBay, Zalora, Lazada

18 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

6. Mobile browser
 Used to browse the web
 Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera Mini, Safari

7. Productivity
 These are applications that help increase the user’s
productivity
 Evernote, Sticky notes, Instapaper, Trello

8. Finance and budgeting

 Applications that allow the user to keep up-to-date on
financial news and perform budgeting
 Bloomberg, Expensify, Forbes

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Assistive technology is anything that helps you do something you

could not do before. Some examples of these are: a pair of glasses
that allows you to see clearer, a hearing aid that allows you to hear
better, or even a software that translates text to speech while you are
driving. There are assistive technologies existing around us. Sometimes
we just fail to notice them.

WHERE CAN I FIND ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES?

1 Screen reader - This is a software that can read the text

displayed on the screen out loud. It is usually used by visually
impaired users.
2 Baille - This is a collection of raised dots that represent
characters (numbers, letters, punctuation marks) which the user
reads by touching the raised dots. It is usually used by visually
impaired users.
3 Magnifier - This is a tool that allows to user to see enlarged
version of the material being viewed. It is usually used by people
with poor vision.

TECHNOKIDS INC. 19
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

4 Wheelchair – This is a seating device that has wheels which

allows it to be moved It can be manually operated or
automatized and is usually used by people with mobility
challenges.
5 Walker – This is a tool that enhances the balance and stability
of user when walking. It is usually used by people with mobility
impairments.
6 Prosthetic limb - These are devices used to replace missing body
parts (limbs), whether existing since birth or came as a result of
an accident, that help the user somehow gain back the
function they lost from the missing body parts.
7 Hearing aids - These devices amplify sounds, making the sound
more intelligible to the user with hearing impairments.
8 Assistive listening devices - These are devices that allow users to
transmit audio, usually through radio waves, to their intended
receiver and eliminate unnecessary noise disturbances during
transmission. e.g. guard A speaks to the radio through the
microphone. The audio is then transmitted through radio wares
to the receiver of guard B, which plays the audio upon
receiving it.
9 Educational Software - These are software that help users with
reading, comprehension, and organization difficulties. These
include but are not limited to the following: note taker, text
synthesizer, and grammar checkers.
10 Home automation tools - These are tools that allow users to
control their home appliances and devices with one single
device without the need of the help of others. These are usually
used by elderly and people with disabilities to allow themselves
to live independently at home.

With the current pace of technological advancement, assistive tools

that never existed before are now being developed and made
commercially available. In the near future, technology will help us
even tighten the gap between disabled people and normal people.

Online Practices

Individual Activity: Students will be asked to do a research on 1)

Online Safety & Security and 2) Online Ethics & Etiquette. The
student will write an 800-1,200 word essay on the importance of
online safety & security and online ethics & etiquette.

Guide questions for the essay:

 What are examples of online safety & security?
 Why is online safety & security important?
 What are examples of online ethics & etiquette?
 Why is it important to practice online ethics & etiquette?

Pair Activity: Students will discuss with a partner their major points on
why online safety & security and online ethics & etiquette are
important. Students will also cite the current ICT tools that they are
using and how they can apply online safety & security and online
ethics & etiquette.

Individual Activity: Students will be asked to write a 600-800 word

essay that identifies how they use internet as a tool for research.

Guide questions for the essay:

 How did I use internet as a tool for doing my research in the
previous class activities?
 What are important things to remember when using the internet
as a research tool?

Online Safety and Security

Online safety and security is the awareness of the user in
implementing counter measures to avoid compromise of sensitive
personal data and assets. An asset is any piece of information that
has certain value to its owner, which when compromised can result
in loss to the asset's owner. As the internet continues to grow and
different industries goes online, online safety and security has
become a growing concern to the netizens. Common threats faced
by the netizens everyday include other netizens with malicious intent
TECHNOKIDS INC. 21
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

(scamming, phishing, and other cybercrimes), unsecured

programmed web applications, and malwares (virus, worm, Trojan
horse, etc.)

WHAT IS SCAMMING?

Scamming is an act of the attacker that seeks to gain the victim's trust
takes advantage of the victim to perform further attacks. Most scams
do not involve technical skills; In fact, the most common method of
scamming being performed is social engineering. Social engineering
is the act of the attacker to interact with and psychologically
manipulate the victim which leads to tricking the victim into
performing an action desired by the attacker or giving out
confidential information to the hacker.

WHAT IS PHISHING?

Phishing is one of the most common cyber attacks wherein the

attacker impersonates a trusted third party in an attempt to get the
credentials or personal information of the victim. These hacked and
stolen credentials and personal information are normally associated
with something valuable, such as credit cards and even properties.

Phishing is done mostly via email containing an external link and the
attacker usually codes a fake website that looks like the legitimate
one to mislead the victim. To avoid phishing attacks, users should
always check the site they are visiting before inputting sensitive data
and login credentials. Fake sites used by attackers to perform
phishing often use domain names close to the legitimate one in order
to deceive the users, but upon closer look they are not really the
same.

Aside from scams and phishing, another common online security trap
are unsecured programmed web applications. Web applications
that are not securely programmed are often used by attackers as
platforms to perform attacks. A web application without proper input

22 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

validation can be used by attackers to store malicious payload via

cross-site scripting.

WHAT IS CROSS-SITE SCRIPTING?

Cross-site scripting is a type of attack typically found in vulnerable

web applications. Attackers often take advantage of sites without
proper input validation to inject malicious payload to attack the
victim. Cross-site scripting can be categorized as persistent and non-
persistent.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PERSISTENT AND NONPERSISTENT

CROSS-SITE SCRIPTING?

Non-persistent cross-site scripting, also known as Reflected XSS,

affects only the target victim. One of the causes of non-persistent
cross-site scripting is the website owner failing to perform proper input
validation on the user input fields. Attackers can also perform this
attack by attaching the malicious payload on the URL itself. Some of
us might think that it is easy to detect malicious codes on the URL, but
attackers have several ways to hide them. In addition, URL shortening
services makes it even more devastating.

The attacker usually sends the URL containing the non-persistent

cross-site scripting malicious payload to the victim, and as soon as the
victim clicks the URL, the victim will either be redirected to a phishing
site, or have his/her credentials stolen immediately.

On the other hand, persistent cross-site scripts are attacks that get
stored in the database of the server. This type of attack usually occurs
on unsecured blogs and forums where user inputs are stored in a
database, but the website fails to validate the user’s input. Persistent
cross-site scripts are meant to exist permanently on a website and
victimize people who visit the site unless removed from the database.

Attackers usually use persistent cross-site scripting attacks to steal

credentials and credit card information from the victims.

HOW DO WE KNOW IF A WEBSITE IS SECURE OR NOT?

Users must always be vigilant when vising websites because not all of
them are secured. Below are some steps that can act as guidelines
to determine whether a website is secured or not:

1. Check the site URL

URL comes with the pattern <protocol identifier>://<resource name>.
For example, in http://www.technokids.ph, the protocol used is HTTP
(Hypertext Transfer Protocol), and the domain name of the webserver
is www.technokids.ph. For ftp://ccs1.dlsu.edu.ph, the protocol used
is the FTP (file transfer protocol).

The webpages we access daily are mostly composed of HTTP and

HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure). The HTTP protocol does
not use any encryption mechanism to establish the connection
between the client and the server hence is very susceptible to
attacks like man-in-the-middle. The HTTPS protocol, on the other
hand, uses either SSL (Secure Socket Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer
Security) to encrypt connection between the client and the server
thus, making it harder for the attacker to extract sensitive data such
as user credentials, bank transaction information, and credit card
information.

The user should also verify if the URL they are visiting is legitimate or
not. For example, the user received an email that contains a
message stating that his or her Facebook account will be locked
down within three days unless they log in and change the password.
At the end of the email there is a shortened URL included. For the
purpose of this lecture we will use the URL “goo.gl/fbpwdr”. At first
glance, the URL might seem legitimate because it uses a Google URL
shortener, which is a trusted source. Upon clicking on the link, a page
that looks exactly like Facebook’s password reset page was
displayed, but the URL reads as
“http://facebook.9wg.com/pwd_reset”.

24 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

Do not trust URL shorteners because you never know where they are
taking you to. Always verify the URL of the site you are visiting, make
sure that it is really the site you want to visit before continuing with any
transactions.

2. Look for the “Padlock” icon

When accessing secured web pages, browsers should be displaying

a padlock icon. Different browsers display the icon in different
locations; therefore, it is very important to know where the padlock
appears on your browser. Do note that the padlock icon should
never be displayed in the HTML rendering area of the browser, as
some malicious sites intentionally display a padlock icon either on the
header or the footer of the page in attempt to trick the user from
believing that the website is a secured site. The padlock icon is also
not an image. When you click the padlock, it should display
information regarding the HTTPS certification issued by the Certificate
Authority (CA) trusted by the browser. Take note of the certificate’s
expiration date. It should not be expired. There should also be
information on the encryption algorithm being used. It should be
displayed below the HTTPS certification information.

WHAT IS A MALWARE?

Malware comes from the English words “malicious” and “software”.

It is a generic term referring to any software that can disrupt normal
business operations by destructing the network infrastructure,
database, and file systems or by bypassing the authorization and
authentication scheme of the system, steal sensitive information, and
spamming the work station or network with undesirable
advertisements. Malwares are generally designed to perform
destruction and sabotage to a system. Although a few malwares are
being used to ask for ransom from the victim, malwares are usually
bound to or disguised as normal file, which make it hard for typical
computer users to detect them without the aid of proper tools. Signs
of malware infection may include degraded performance, unusual
system activities, and frequent pop-ups.

Although most malware only run when executed by the user (without
the user’s knowledge of course), there are certain malwares that can
execute and replicate themselves throughout the network and
cause massive destruction. One example of this malware is a worm.

HOW DO WE DETECT/PREVENT MALWARE INFECTION?

A malware infection can be detected with the help of either an anti-

malware software or a firewall software.

WHAT IS AN ANTI-MALWARE SOFTWARE?

An anti-malware software is a software downloaded and installed by

the user to protect the workstations from malware threats. There are
anti-malwares that require the user to purchase a license for all their
features to work while some come with free licenses. Anti-malware
can either detect a malware through database scan or heuristics.

26 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

HOW DOES AN ANTI-MALWARE DETECT MALWARE THROUGH

DATABASE SCAN?

Database scan detects malwares when the malwares’ signatures

match the signatures found and stored in the database.

WHAT IS HEURISTIC SCANNING?

Heuristic scanning allows the anti-malware to analyze the software

more thoroughly hence, allowing the anti-malware to detect
possible threats that are not yet discovered. When a threat is
detected, the anti-malware can either place the infected file to a
sandbox, which prevents the infected file from further replicating and
infecting other files, or remove the file from the system.

WHAT IS A FIREWALL?

Firewall acts as the first line of defense that protects the workstation
or the whole network from malware threats. Firewalls also come in the
form of hardware firewall and software firewall.

WHAT IS A HARDWARE FIREWALL?

Hardware firewall are firewalls that come with a dedicated hardware

and are considered faster, more expensive, and harder to maintain.

WHAT IS A SOFTWARE FIREWALL?

Software firewalls can be downloaded and installed to a workstation

dedicated for the firewall’s system and has enough processing
power to process the inbound and outbound traffic. Software
firewalls are considered cheaper and easier to maintain. Software
firewalls can be classified as open-source, freeware, or licensed-
based. Although a firewall can detect attacks and threats, it cannot
detect threats that are already existing inside the network.

TECHNOKIDS INC. 27
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

To keep yourself safe from the threats of malware, it is suggested that

you do perform the following steps below:

1 Install an anti-malware on your system

2 Always keep your anti-malware up-to-date
3 Always keep your Operating System up-to-date
4 Frequently use the anti-malware to scan your system for
malware
5 Visit only trusted websites
6 Backup important files on different workstation or on a cloud
storage service
7 Use strong passwords

 Password should contain at least one special character,

one uppercase character, one lowercase character, and
a number
 Do not use easy-to-guess passwords like P@ssw0rd
 Do not use one password for all of your accounts
o When using only one password for all accounts, if
one account is compromised, all accounts are at
risk.
 Change your password frequently
 As much as possible, do not reuse passwords

Listed above are some of the basic guidelines in securing yourself and
your information and do not guarantee you 100% safety as
information security is a never-ending process.

Online safety and security does not only include technical aspect, it
is strongly recommended that users always stay vigilant and always
refrain from leaking sensitive personal information. Always remember
that a person can be anyone on the internet; therefore, give your
trust, but at the same time verify things.

Online Ethics and Etiquette

WHAT IS NETIQUETTE?

The word “netiquette” is derived from two words, namely network

and etiquette. Netiquette is a set of dos and don’ts that netizens
should follow when surfing the internet. Although there are no specific
written rules in the cyberspace, netizens are still expected to follow a
set of guidelines on how to behave when online. It is important for the
netizens to know the proper netiquette so that one can express freely
without offending anyone. Netiquette does not only cover how one
communicate with others, it also covers guidelines on one can
properly use resources online.

HOW IS SOMEONE EXPECTED TO BEHAVE ONLINE?

When communicating through email, one is expected to:

a. Be polite
b. Begin a message by greeting the recipient
 Good day Mr./Ms./Mrs. <Recipient’s last name>,
 Dear Mr./Ms./Mrs. <Recipient’s last name>
c. End the email with your name
 Yours Sincerely,
<Your name>
 Yours Truly,
<Your name>
 Best Regards,
<Your name>
d. Include a signature (if applicable)
e. Think before writing
 Use appropriate wording
 No foul language
 As much as possible maintain correct grammar and
spelling
f. Read and reply to messages promptly
g. Do not spam other people’s mail box
 Avoid forwarding useless advertisements and chain
mails

h. Use appropriate mail subject

i. When using intellectual property online, do not forget to
give credits to the owner of the resource.

WHAT IS INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY?

Intellectual property is anything that is a result of one’s creativity. This

may be an invention, a design, or any form of art. Intellectual
properties are protected by Intellectual Property Rights, a right of the
property owner to decide to whom the property will be shared, and
gives the owner the right to sue anyone who uses the property
without his/her authorization. Different types of Intellectual Property
Rights addressed different types of intellectual property.

The table below shows how different types of intellectual properties

are being protected under the Intellectual Property Rights:

Intellectual Type of Intellectual Example

Property Right Property
Patent Inventions Oculus Rift, Google Glass,
Siri
Copyright Any form of art or Book, song, movie
works
Industrial Designs iPhone’s designs,
Design Right Samsung Galaxy designs
Plant Breeders’ Plant variety iPhone’s designs,
Right Samsung Galaxy designs
Trademarks Anything that Yahoo! logo, Google

Trade Dress Product appearance Interface design of
and packaging Google Search Engine
Trade Secrets Information kept Confidential files and

TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

When forwarding a personal email or message, it is expected that

we ask permission from the owner of the content first before doing
so.

The internet promotes freedom of speech, but the netizens must

avoid flaming and insulting fellow netizens. Rules in real life still apply
online. Exploiting children, spreading extremist ideologies, cyber theft,
and Intellectual Property Right violations are still punishable by law.

Internet has no borders but cultural differences are still existing;

therefore, we are expected to accept and respect each other’s
culture and norms. Refrain from making racist jokes, participating in
cyber bullying, or stalking someone without their knowledge. These
actions are considered abusive.

Online Research Tools

WHAT ARE ONLINE RESEARCH TOOLS?

Online research tools are a set of digital tool that aid the user in
performing research. Just like any internet tool, online research tools
also have their advantages and disadvantages.

TECHNOKIDS INC. 31
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE RESEARCH TOOLS?

Online research tools offer a single source of information where the

user can perform data gathering from a single point of location. It
also allows you to save a topic that you found online, securely store
it and access it on a later time. Online research tools increase the
pace of researchers when gathering and organizing data. They are,
theoretically, a source of unlimited resources. Unlike traditional
libraries, online research tools are not limited to just textbooks and
journals; in fact, there are good online resources that are not in the
form of written text, but in the form of either audio or video. Audios
and videos can sometimes be a better source of information as
compared to pure text information because there are just things that
audios and videos can do that textbooks cannot. If used efficiently,
the internet is like a large library that can provide you with all the
information you need to perform your research. In spite of the
advantages of online research tools, they also have a number of
disadvantages.

WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF ONLINE RESEARCH TOOLS?

Unlike resources found in the library, some online resources come with
additional fee for you to fully access their contents. Some will require
you one-time payment while others will require you to pay a monthly
subscription before you can access the content you need.

Since everyone is free to post anything online, articles published

online more likely has gone through lesser quality assurance checks
as compared to published books we found in physical libraries. For a
book to be published, it often needs to meet certain standards set by
the publishing house. Journals are also often verified by several
experts before getting published. On the other hand, anyone can just
spend a few bucks to buy a domain name and start publishing
articles online. These contents are not strictly moderated; hence,
quality control is harder on the internet. In fact, there are many
articles out there that are biased towards specific brand/service they
are advertising for.

TECHNOBOOST SESSION 1

HOW DO WE DETERMINE WHETHER A SOURCE IS CREDIBLE?

There are few simple steps that we can follow to check if the source
website is credible or not:

1. Check the URL

a. We can easily determine the type of organization behind
the website
 .com is for commercial use
 .edu is for educational use
 .gov is for government use
 .org is usually for nonprofit organizations
 .net is usually for network service providers
 .mil are for military use only
b. The URL often contains the name of the abbreviation of
the organization/publisher’s name in its URL
2. We should also take note of the following:
a. Credibility of the content publisher
b. The content must be unbiased and of no commercial use
c. What are the target audience of the article and how
recent was it published?
d. The date of publishing
e. Citation and references

When performing online research, we tend to be easily distracted by

the other contents on the internet. This dramatically reduces our
pace and productivity. When performing online research, we must
maintain self-discipline so that we can efficiently perform our tasks.

Fortunately, there are some handy tricks we can use when

performing online research, making the search easier and more
precise.

A few of these search engine tricks are discussed below:

TECHNOKIDS INC. 33
ESTABLISING PARTNERSHIPS

a) Use of Boolean operators:

 Involves adding the words “AND”, “OR”, and “NOT”
into the search keywords
 The operators should be always capitalized

List of Boolean operators and their functions:

1) AND
 Retrieves items that includes two or more
different contents together
 e.g. an article that discusses “police” AND
“drugs”
2) OR
 Does not matter which concept shows up in your
results as long as one concept is included
 e.g. “baby” OR “infant”; does not matter which
result you get they are the same anyway
3) NOT
 Removes search results you do not need by
filtering out search results
 e.g. When you search for “computer” and
laptops keep showing up, you can search
“computer” NOT “laptop” to filter out laptop
results

b) Truncation:
 Includes “*”
 Used at the end of the keyword
 Useful when searching for concepts with multiple ending
 e.g. When you search for the keyword “canad”, it will
return results for “canada”, “canadian” and “canadians”

c) Quotation marks (“): Used to keep words together in search

 e.g. If you search the keyword: jump street, it will return
results for both jump and street, but if you added
quotation marks, your search engine will recognize the
two words as one word and will only return the result for
“jump street”

Advanced Techniques Using Common Productivity &

Software Applications

There are a lot of existing productivity & software applications

available. New applications are also being created every year.
Current applications are also being upgraded every now and then.
The applications that we use today may be outdated by the time
these students enter the workforce. What students need to develop
are the skills to identify and apply different techniques in using
advance productivity tools for a specific professional track.

Individual Activity: The purpose of this activity is to identify what

applications the students are already familiar with. The activity will

be focusing on one productivity or software application. No two
groups will work on a similar application.

Each group will be doing its individual research and will explore the
application that is assigned to them. The group output should be a
presentation of applying different techniques in using a certain
application. The more groups/applications that is presented in the
class, the better. There are a lot of applications existing in the market,
and it is an advantage if a student is familiar with a lot of application
so that the student can also identify which application will be best
used in a given task or scenario.

Individual Activity: The purpose of this activity is to identify the new

techniques or new applications the students learned from the
group presentations.

The student may write the same application that he or she wrote in
the first worksheet. However, techniques should be different from
what he or she wrote in the first worksheet.

Remember that this activity should reflect the new learnings that the
student gained from the group presentations. Therefore, the answers

Discussion Questions

 What have you realized from the group activity and group
presentations?
 What new discoveries did you find after going through the
group activity?
 What new discoveries did you find after the group
presentations?
 What is the role of productivity and software applications in our
lives today?

The main realization should be students independently learned to

develop skills when using the applications. The reason behind this is
that applications are being developed every year and the
applications that they are using today may already be outdated
when they enter the work force. It is important that they learn how to
learn new tools on their own.

APPLYING ADVANCED TECHNIQUES USING COMMON PRODUCTIVITY

& SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS IN A SPECIFIC PROFESSIONAL TRACK

If students already have a wide range of knowledge in various

productivity & software applications, they also need to develop the
skills in identifying which techniques can be useful in a specific
professional track.

Individual Activity

Think of 1 or 2 productivity & software applications that you will work

on. These applications may be the ones presented in class or not.
Students may choose to look for other new applications as long as
they meet the objective of the activity. Be creative as possible.

Basic Principles of Layout, Graphic, and Visual Message

Design

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF GRAPHICS AND LAYOUT

Four (4) Basic Principles of Design and Layout

Principle #1: Contrast

 Making important thing stand out
 This adds visual interest to the design and creates visual
hierarchy.
 Calls the attention of the viewer/reader
 Using colors, bold, italics, underline, or changing font style and
size are examples of ways in which designers can create a
contrast.
 Examples of contrast:
o Using headings and subheadings in documents

TECHNOKIDS INC. 49
UNITY AND COLLECTIVE EFFORT

o A photo placed in a dark background

Go through various examples of existing designs that are available

around you and identify how the Principle of Contrast was applied.

Discussion Questions

 How is the Principle of Contrast applied in ________? (i.e.:

Advertisement Poster, Website, Newspaper, Text Book)
 How else do you think the Principle of Contrast can be applied?
 In your motivational activity, did you apply the Principle of
Contrast? If yes, how? If no, how can you apply the Principle of
Contrast in your design?

Principle #2: Repetition

 Applying consistency in the design
 Repeating an aspect of the design
 Acts as a visual key that unifies your design and helps maintain
the attention of the viewer/reader
 Using the same elements such as font style, font size, format or
graphic is one way in which designers can create repetition.
 Repetition is seen in templates
 Examples of repetition:
o The background is maintained
o Consistent font style is used
o Same colors are applied

applied?
 In your motivational activity, did you apply the Principle of
Repetition? If yes, how? If no, how can you apply the Principle
of Repetition in your design?

Principle #3 : Proximity
 Putting related items closely together and putting non-related
items apart.
 Puts structure and organization in the design
 Helps identify which items are related
 Examples of proximity:
o Information on employee details is placed closely
together
o Information on address is placed closely together
o Information on contact information is placed closely
together
o Company name and website are placed far from other
information

 In your motivational activity, did you apply the Principle of
Proximity? If yes, how? If no, how can you apply the Principle of
Proximity in your design?

Principle #4: Alignment

 Making text easier to read through proper alignment
 How space is used, whether to align text to the right, left or
center
 Giving order and strength in the design
 Different alignments have different effects.
 Example of alignment:
o The text in this business card is aligned to the right

applied?
 In your motivational activity, did you apply the Principle of
Alignment? If yes, how? If no, how can you apply the Principle
of Alignment in your design?

Important Note: It is recommended that students are exposed to as

many as possible existing designs for them to identify how the
Principles of Contrast, Repetition, Proximity and Alignment were
applied. You may ask students to explore their surroundings: inside
the classroom, outside the school, at home, at the mall, etc. In
addition, as a take home task, you may also ask them to write a
report on the observations they got from their surroundings and how
the Basic Principles of Design and Layout were applied. Students will
have a better understanding and grasp of this principle if they can
already observe it being applied in daily lives.

PRINCIPLES OF VISUAL MESSAGE DESIGN USING INFOGRAPHICS

What are infographics?

 Information that is presented in a graphic visual form
 A visual image that can quickly send a clear message

Principles of creating effective infographics

Simple is Better
 Don’t overdo it
 Make your infographic: clean, concise and clear.
 Information should be well organized.
 Readers should easily comprehend the visual message
 Beware of overwhelming the reader with so many things going
on in the infographic
TECHNOKIDS INC. 53
UNITY AND COLLECTIVE EFFORT

 Too much information and too many visuals can be a

distraction and can cause confusion

Less is More
 Keep texts in a minimum
 Avoid giving readers lengthy texts to read
 A short explanation may be enough to convey your message.
 Go straight to the point

Creativity
 Add that special touch to your infographic
 Try different combinations of illustrations, images, charts, icons,
diagrams, and typography.
 Experiment with colors, fonts, shapes, and white spaces.
 Highlight important words with a creative font in contrast to a
neutral font
 Use images to emphasize information or to explain a meaning
 Uniqueness
 Use something unexpected
 Do not limit yourself with a basic bar graph or chart
 Video clips can also be an infographic (example: Whiteboard
Animations and PowerPoint Presentations)
 Make it fun and entertaining, especially if the topic is heavy
information.

Color schemes
 Apply the psychology of color in your color selections
 Color is an important part of an infographic and affects the
reader’s emotions and impressions.
 Color selections does not have to be colorful and can work in
little variations
 Colors enhance the information and help create visual
hierarchy
 Focus on one central idea
 Begin with an end in mind, “What is the takeaway message?”
 Explain the relationship of cause and effect: for every effect,
there is a cause. Infographics help spread awareness if readers
are aware of the cause.
54 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 3

Research facts and figures

 Make sure your information can be backed up by data and
can be verified
 Your infographic should be credible with reliable sources
 Cite your sources and include links if they are available

Organization
 Make your infographic easy to navigate
 Create a narrative script/flow on how you can effectively
present the data
 Tell a story and end with a conclusion
 Make it worth sharing
 You want your infographic to go around the web
 The way you can relay your information to other people is when
people share your infographic.
 Include links and call-to-action reminders that will make the
reader share the infographic to their social networking sites.
 Sharing the infographic should be easy to do (i.e. reblog, share,
and forward buttons)
 If the call to action involves too many links, a lot of people will
disregard sharing your infographic even if it was designed really
well

Individual Activity: Search and look for an infographic of your

choice and write a one-page report explaining what information
you can gather from the infographic of your choice.

Discussion Questions

 Summarize what you have learned about infographics.

 What are the important things to remember when creating
infographics?
 What are the benefits of infographics?

TECHNOKIDS INC. 55
UNITY AND COLLECTIVE EFFORT

PRINCIPLES OF IMAGE MANIPULATION

Successful image manipulation is making things as realistic as

possible.

Choosing Images
 Not all photos can be easily manipulated. You should choose
a clean image that can be easily rendered.
 Avoid blurry images, and choose images that are sharp.

Rendering Images
 When cutting images, we don’t want rough edges or
evidences that the photo was taken from a different
background.

Combining Images
 Choose the right images that will fit with the design you want to
create.
 The background, the objects, the people, and other elements
should be in harmony with your design.

Adding Shadows
 Every item that needs a shadow should have a shadow
 Duplicate the image, change color to black, add Gaussian
Blur, adjust the size, and move it to the ideal place where the
shadow is expected to be seen.

Proportion
 Proportion and placement of objects make a huge difference
on how realistic your image will turn out to be.
Images that are far should be smaller than the images that are
closer.

Texture
 Blending and choosing the right texture for your image is
important in image manipulation.
 Texture adds depth and will set the mood for your image.

56 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 3

Color Blending
 Color blending helps to match an image with your
background, texture, and other images
 Photo filters and gradient maps help add or remove color in
images and help with the blending of your image to other
objects
 Tip: Identify first the colors in your images that already blend
together, and then manipulate the colors to blend with the
others

Attention to Details
 Identify the certain spot where you want to draw the viewer’s
attention.
 Tip: Focus on the part of the image where the colors are more
vibrant or sharp. This portion of your image should stand out.

Basic Web Design Principles and Elements

Purpose
 Identify the purpose of your website
 Each page of the website needs to have a purpose

TECHNOKIDS INC. 69
I’M THE ONE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

Content
 Users visit websites because of the contents of the website.
 Content is very important so make sure that the content of your
website is of high-quality and credibility.
 There are a lot of websites that gain traffic because their
content is of high-quality even if the websites are not that well
designed.

Communication
 The design of your website should communicate with the user
clearly
 Information should be easy to read and easy to digest
 Make use of sub-headings, bold text, and bullet items

F Pattern
 Studies shows that people tend to scan computer screens in an
“F” pattern.
 What they usually see is the top and left side of the screen
 When deciding for the over-all design of a website, consider
the viewer’s visual flow. Place the important information at the
top and left side.

Navigation
 Your website should be easy to navigate
 Some of the effective ways to easily navigate a website are
through page hierarchy, labels, and clickable buttons
 Online viewers would want to find information in your website
quickly.
 Three-click-rule: users can find the information within three (3)
clicks
 The homepage should show the important information.
 Page titles should be simple and descriptive
 Page titles should not confuse the readers about the content
of the page.
 Maintain consistency of main sections and labels for each
page of your website.

70 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 4

 Clear structure, visual clues, and recognizable links will help the
viewers navigate the website easily.

Typefaces
 Sans Serif font is easier to read online
 Serif fonts are more decorative and are easier to read in printed
works.
 16px is an ideal font size for reading online
 Streamline the design of your web page by sticking to a
maximum of three (3) typefaces

Colors
 Colors help enhance the user experience
 For text and background, choose contrasting colors to make
the content easier to read

website

Images
 The right images will help you connect with your target
audience
 Infographics, videos, stock photos, and graphics can be
effective ways of communicating aside from texts.

Grid Based Layouts

 Help arrange website content into sections, columns, and
boxes
 Help your website avoid the messy look and create balance

Load Time
 Your website should not take long to load.
 Optimize the file size of your images.
 Combine the codes in central CSS or JavaScript to reduce HTTP
requests.
TECHNOKIDS INC. 71
I’M THE ONE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

 Compress HTML, CSS, and JavaScript codes to speed up the

loading time.

Mobile Friendly
 Make your website accessible to different devices
 You can build a responsive layout to make your website adjust
depending on the screen size
 You can also build a separate website that is specifically
designed for mobile devices

OTHER ELEMENTS OF A WEBSITE

About Us
 This tells the user bout the owner of the website and what they
do.
 It discusses the company’s information for a business website or
personal information for a personal website
 Some websites put testimonials and success stories in this page.
 This can also be a page where other related pages about the
company or people involved to the website can be placed.
 Keep your About Us page simple and avoid making it too long.
 Provide enough information to keep the interest of the viewer.

Contact Information
 Having the contact information available to users add the
legitimacy to the website because users can contact the
website owner if they have any other questions.
 Keep the contact information visible for users to easily see
 A contact form is also a great way to communicate with the
website owner. This allows users to email you directly from the
website.
 Tip: Keep the contact information static and available in all
pages in the same location so that it is visible.

Call-to-action
 Call-to-action is the part that users are encouraged to take an
action after getting information from your website

72 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 4

 This can include: sharing the website, commenting on a post,

making a purchase, signing a form, etc.
 To encourage an action from the user, make sure your call-to-
action sign is obvious and strong.
 You need to determine what you expect users to do after
visiting your website.
 The design of your website should point users to do the call-to-
action.

Search Feature
 This helps viewers find information in your website quickly.
 The search feature should be easy to use and big enough to
type words in
 You can use the standard magnifying glass as an icon for
search

Information Footer
 Footer is at the bottom of the page. It is a place where you can
put information that won’t interfere with the design of your
website.
 It should blend with your website and should have a
minimalistic look.
 The footer should be simple and useful.
 It is commonly used to put location, contact information, links,
and other important contents.
 The footer is often static and available in all pages of the
website.

Buttons
 The clickable buttons in your website should be recognizable.
 Buttons should be of the same shape, design, and color theme.
 Consistent button design will help users easily identify that an
object is a button

Project Management for ICT Content

THE FIVE (5) STAGES OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROCESS.

1. Initiation
 Authorization to start a new project
 A phase wherein the needs were identified
 A feasibility study may be conducted here to evaluate the
proposed solution to the needs.
 The scope of the project and the resources required are refined
in this phase
 Other modifications of the project are also done in this phase
 During this phase, projects may be split into various stages

2. Planning
 Gathering of information from difference sources to further
identify, define, and understand the project to make the
project into fruition
 Identify the tasks and requirements needed to accomplish the
project
 This is the stage where the scope aspect, risks, schedule, cost,
and technology are further explored
 Planning is an on-going process and changes in planning may
also occur during execution process

3. Executing
 Does the action that was discussed in the planning phase
 Coordinating with people, gathering the resources,
integrating, and performing the activities according to the plan
 It is normal to experience in the execution stage that the
decisions made in the planning needs to be changed (i.e. due
to unexpected risks or unavailability of resources).
 Implementation of the approved changes

4. Controlling
 Monitoring and observing the project execution
 Potential problems can be identified in this phase
TECHNOKIDS INC. 77

Online Collaborative Tools and Processes

Individual Activity: Instruct the students to research at least five (5)

different types of applications that can be used for collaborating
using the power of the Internet.

Each application should answer the following question:

 What does this application do?

 How do you manipulate this application? How do you make
this application work?
 How can this application be helpful in collaborating online?

Students will also identify the applications that they had

experienced using and should describe how they find the tool
useful.

Note: Messenger applications can also be used for collaboration.

Group Activity

In separate groups, students will summarize the collaborative tools

that each of the members has made a research on. Groups should

discuss with other groups which application they will present to

avoid redundancy of reported applications.

Discussion Questions

 How can online collaborative tools be used to collaboratively

develop an ICT content?
 How can we use platforms and software to share developed
ICT content?
 What kind of platforms do we see on the web and what type
of content does it have?

Platforms that may be currently used to host ICT Content

Individual Activity: Students to research at least one (1) source of

content on EACH category below.

1. Presentation / Visualization
2. Cloud Computing
3. Social Media
4. Web Page
5. Blog Site

The student should provide the URL link of the ICT content and create
a short description (1-3 sentences) on what kind of information one
can get from the ICT content.

Students will list the different applications used and write the
category where a particular application falls under (i.e.
Presentation/Visualization, Cloud Computing, Social Media, Web
Page or Blog Site).

Note: This is better when the list is something that everybody can see.
List only the platform/software used and not the link or the name of
the file. For web pages, it is sometimes difficult to identify what was
used to create the page.

The User Experience

FIVE STEPS IN CONDUCTING A USER EXPERIENCE RESEARCH

Step 1: Objectives: What do we want to know?

TECHNOKIDS INC. 85
AN ULTIMATE USER EXPERIENCE

Framing questions in identifying objectives:

 Who?
 What?
 When?
 Where?
 Why?
 How?

Step 2: Hypotheses: What are our assumptions?

Answer the framing questions based on your own assumptions or
what you currently know.

Step 3: Method: How do we find the answers?

Consider the timeline, the people involved, resources, and other
factors.

Step 4: Conduct: Gather data that will help us get answers

Once you have a clear research method, you may start
implementing it to gather the data.

Step 5: Synthesis: Generate answers based from the data gathered

Answer your framing questions based from the data gathered.
Check if it confirms or rejects the hypothesis.

USER EXPERIENCE RESEARCH METHODS

Attitudinal and Behavioral Dimension

Attitudinal
 What people say
 Understand or measure people’s beliefs
 Self-reported information can still be useful for designers.
 Examples are surveys that measure attitudes that can help find
answers in issues that needs to be addressed. Focus group
discussions can also be useful to identify the view of what
people think about a product

86 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 6

Behavioral
 What people do
 Attempts to understand the behavior of people when using the
product
 Most usability studies are behavioral but a mixture of self-
reported and behavioral data is generally recommended

Qualitative and Quantitative Dimension

Qualitative
 Generate data based on observing people directly
 Researcher directly observe how people use the product and
able to ask additional questions or adjust to meet the research
objectives
 Analysis is usually not mathematical
 Best suited to answer questions “How” and “Why”

Quantitative
 Generate data based on observing people indirectly using a
measurement or instrument
 Typically needs mathematical analysis and able to gather
large amounts of data and coded them numerically
 Best suited to answer questions “How much” and “How many”

TECHNOKIDS INC. 87
AN ULTIMATE USER EXPERIENCE

Group Activity:

Each group will identify a platform or an application and will do an

exercise activity in establishing framing questions and hypotheses,
including identifying the methods to find the answers to the framing
questions.

Group Output:
1. Objectives: What do we want to know?
2. Hypotheses: What are our assumptions?
3. Method: How do we find the answers?

Each group will present their objectives, hypotheses, and method to

the class. The rest of the class will offer suggestions and comments on
how the group can revise or improve their objectives, hypotheses,
and methods.

Note: This is just a practice in creating a UX research. It is upon the

teacher’s discretion if there will be enough time to proceed with
Steps 4 & 5 (implementation and conclusion of the study).

88 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 6

TIPS IN CONDUCTIVE A USER EXPERIENCE RESEARCH

 Apply a rigorous research method to avoid researcher bias

 The team doing the research study must understand the
purpose of the study
 A sound research plan is established based on extensive review
of existing theories, models, and literature.
 Identify the target participants and the sample size
 To avoid conflict of interest, the UX researcher should be
different from the designer of the product
 Do a pilot test. This helps identify validity and potential problems
before scaling big on the actual research
 Be mindful of the Hawthorne Effect. This is when participants
change their behavior when they know that they are being
observed

Filipino citizen. The target audience is the Filipino people. There is an
issue in your society but not a lot of people are aware of it or paying
attention to it. You and your friends understand the importance of
this issue. You want people to be aware of the issue in order for them
to make actions that will address the issue. You need to create an
advocacy plan that is publishable online and will pave way for
Filipino people to be aware of the issue.

TARGET SKILLS:
 Identifying the social power of social media
 Identifying the different social phenomena that have used ICT as part of
a social movement, change, or cause
 Identifying how the different social phenomena applied ICT as part of a
social movement, change, or cause
 Identifying a local or regional cause or issue for social change related to
specific professional tracks
 Identifying how an issue for Social Change can be addressed or tackled
using an ICT Project
 Analyzing how target or intended users and audiences are expected to
respond to the proposed ICT Project for Social Change on the basis of
content, value, and user experience

ICTs as Platform for Change

ICT as medium for advocacy and developmental communication

Individual Activity

Students will answer the question/s:

1) How can ICT be applied as part of a social movement,
change, or cause in illustrating aspects of digital citizenship?
2) What do I know about digital citizenship?

Students will answer this activity using an online application where

they can write a body of the text and be able to share it to the
teacher by providing a link (i.e. Google Docs, BlogSpot, WordPress,
etc.).

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP AND THE FILIPINO PEOPLE

The availability of cheap smartphones in the market, free Facebook

for some networks, and low cost text messaging, make information
and communication easily accessible. We observe people bury their
faces on their smartphones and see younger people spend
countless hours in front of their computers or video game consoles.
This is not surprising since we, Filipinos, were considered as the most
active texters in 2011. And in 2014, we led the world in social media
engagement. Given that Filipino people are active in the use of
technology, in general, the question we ask ourselves now is: “Are
we really prepared enough to be good and responsible digital
citizens?”

Digital Citizens are people who utilize information technology

regularly and effectively. Digital Citizenship refers to the norms of
appropriate and responsible use of technology. Mike Ribble, et al.
identified nine elements of Digital Citizenship that focus on current
issues with the flexibility to accommodate changes in technology.
Learning about responsible Digital Citizenship will prepare and allow
students to build better online presence and foster productive online
communities.
TECHNOKIDS INC. 93
CHANGING THE WORLD

THE NINE ELEMENTS OF DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

1. Digital Access

What is Digital Access? Digital Access is defined as the full electronic

participation in society. It advocates equal digital rights and
opportunities for people to access technology.

Issues
Technology allows us to connect to people and information. It is
meant to be used and accessed by everyone. However, this is not
always the case. There are several factors that hinder equal
opportunities for technology access including socioeconomic status,
geographic location, and impairments. Some families do not have
the financial ability to sustain access to technology in their homes.
Aside from the considerably slow internet connection in our country,
some areas experience consistent disconnections and some don’t
even have internet connectivity. It is also difficult for people with
impairments when technology designers do not consider their
disabilities in developing programs or hardware.

Solution
In order to promote equal opportunities to Digital Access, educators
should consider students who may not have the financial ability to
have access to technology in their homes. Schools may consider
extending access to computer laboratories and libraries to
accommodate students who can’t access technology at home.
Schools may also consider purchasing equipment to aid people with
impairment in using technologies in their schools.

2. Digital Commerce

What is Digital Commerce? Digital Commerce is defined as the

electronic buying and selling of goods. This element aims to provide
understanding on how to be responsible and careful consumers in
the digital economy.

94 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 7

Issues
The online market economy is steadily growing as many transactions
are now powered electronically. Online purchases require little
effort, and the variety of products online is extremely wide, which is
very appealing to users. If one is not careful enough, he or she may
turn addicted to it causing accumulation of debt. In the long run, this
can ruin one’s credit score. Consumers must also be aware of the
dangers in purchasing online. There are websites out there that are
not as credible as others, and there are people who find ways to
steal information you.

Solution
Educators may believe that it is not their responsibility to inform
students about Digital Commerce; however, online purchasing has
grown so much that it has already became a part of our lives.
Educators also have the responsibility in preparing students for their
lives ahead and inform them of the risks and implications of excessive
online purchasing. It will also be helpful if students are given tips on
how to identify best deals and credible websites for purchases.

3. Digital Communication

What is Digital Communication? Digital Communication is defined

as the electronic exchange of information. This element understands
that communication has changed with the introduction of mobile
phones, texting, and social networking. It also considers the
implications involved in these avenues of communication.

Issues
Modern technology has made communication a lot easier for
everyone. Filipinos embraced the emergence of these technologies
especially with how easy it is to access and use them, and given how
free we can be in terms of the contents and the form of
communication we can choose from. While freedom is a good
thing, it poses several problems that we have to seriously consider.
People, more often than not, no longer review the content of what
they post online or messages they send to other people. This could

TECHNOKIDS INC. 95
CHANGING THE WORLD

be a problem as these messages and posts can leave negative

digital footprints that can be sneaky factors when it comes to job
hunting and career growth. There are also issues of inappropriate use
of communications technology in classrooms. While it is good to
ensure that parents have ways to contact their children at all times,
by allowing children to bring their mobiles with them in schools,
mobile phones can be a learning distraction in schools. Some
students text and access social media during class.

Solution
Students need to be informed of the appropriate use of
communications technology. Educators may consider finding ways
of incorporating these technologies in a classroom setting to
promote use of communications technology in education.
Educators can use social media groups to create a virtual classroom
so that students can see that these kinds of technology can be used
in an educational sense. It is also important to remind students to
share appropriate information and avoid bullying especially on
social media.

4. Digital Literacy

What is Digital Literacy? Digital Literacy is defined as the process of

teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology.
This element considers the importance of learning how to use
technology effectively and appropriately. Although most
technology are designed for ease of use, it is still important for people
to be taught how to use technologies to maximize access and
efficiency.

Issues
While the availability of technology is vast, not always are there
corresponding lectures or demonstrations on how to use these
products. We can easily buy smart phones, laptops, and other techs
but we were rarely taught how to use them. From experience, we
were only taught how to turn them on and off, some shortcuts and
basic features, and their technical specifications. If ever there are

96 TECHNOKIDS INC.
TECHNOBOOST SESSION 7

sessions on how to use these products, topics focused on how to use

them appropriately are never included. In the classroom set up, the
lack of digital literacy limits the potential for education in classrooms.
Students spend a lot of time online and are exposed to many new
technologies and approaches in presentation of information, which
makes them look for creative ways of learning things. Educators,
however, are stuck with traditional classroom methods, which
somehow decrease the engagement and interest level of students.

Solution
Finding the balance between teaching how to use a product and
how to appropriately use them is important to exercise effective
Digital Literacy. When introducing new technology in the classroom,
it is important that students know how to effectively use them and
know how to use them appropriately. It is also advisable for
educators to explore and develop new teaching styles to adapt to
the evolving ways of learning.

5. Digital Etiquette

What is Digital Etiquette? Digital Etiquette is defined as the electronic

standards of conduct or procedure. Technology may be an
important part of our lives now, but it is not an excuse for bad real-
life etiquette. Digital Etiquette tackles the issue of inappropriate use
of technology that affects others and our relationship with them.

Issues
Younger people usually follows the examples set by adults. So if
adults exercise bad etiquette while using technology, younger
people will assume that it is the proper etiquette. The introduction of
technology has somehow produced confusion on when and how to
use technology for those who were slow to adapt. In relation to
communication, people are also abusing their freedom in the digital
world. Some people feel that they are stronger online since they are
not face-to-face with the person they are talking to. This causes
cyberbullying, flaming, and other forms of keyboard wars.
Solution

TECHNOKIDS INC. 97
CHANGING THE WORLD

It is important to make students understand that etiquette online is

similar to etiquette in the real world. They need to be taught that they
need to treat people online the same way they treat people in the
real world. Educators should also emphasize manners in using
technology. Excusing one’s self when answering a call instead of
answering it while talking to someone is an example. No one should
risk their relationship with people with the way they use technology.

6. Digital Law

What is Digital Law? Digital Law is defined as the electronic

responsibility for actions and deeds. Although technology has made
it possible to share information easily, information should still be
subjected for review. When sharing information through technology,
one should consider the appropriateness of the content and should
evaluate if what they are sharing and downloading can be legally
used.

Issues
Piracy, plagiarism, identity theft, pornography, and hacking are
some issues associated with technology. When caught, some
people claim that they didn’t know it was wrong. They believe that
they were just sharing information without knowledge on what can
be legally shared. The implementation of the necessary actions to
prevent these crimes is also minimal, which further encourages these
illegal activities.

Solution
It is important to inform students of the implications of these crimes.
They need to know that these crimes are serious and have serious
consequences. Providing resource on what is legal and illegal will
also be helpful. As responsible digital citizens, students should also be
encouraged to help spread the awareness of the consequences of
cybercrimes.

TECHNOBOOST SESSION 7

7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities

What are Digital Rights and Responsibilities? Digital Rights and

Responsibilities are defined as the requirements and freedom
extended to everyone in the digital world. Digital Citizenship is similar
to being part of a community or a group. When given an opportunity
to be in a group, there are certain privileges that come with it. There
are also rules we have to follow to maintain that membership. Digital
Citizenship allows us to have rights to our content and responsibilities
in sharing information that is not ours. These rights and responsibilities
may come in the form of Acceptable Use Policies or established rules
and regulations.

Issues
The issue lies in the violation of Acceptable Use Policies when one
sees that it isn’t fair. In most cases, AUP has already been discussed
among the digital community. Hence, violating such disrespects the
common agreement of a digital community. It is also an issue when
people share information, be it ours or others, without citing the
source. Although posting information online can sometimes be
argued as public information, there is still a need to cite sources to
avoid violation of intellectual property rights.

Solution
To avoid violation of intellectual property rights, students must be
trained to cite sources whenever they get anything online. When
posting original works, it is also advisable to include watermarks on
their works or explicitly say that they should be cited when sharing
the post. AUP in school should also be strictly implemented. If issues
arise, the voice of the students should be heard. This will encourage
a healthy two-way communication between the school and its
students. It will also allow an avenue to explain to the students the
reasons behind the rules on using technology in and out of school.

CHANGING THE WORLD

8. Digital Health and Wellness

What is Digital Health and Wellness? Digital Health and Wellness is

defined as the physical and psychological well-being in a digital
technology world. We need to be aware of the health risk inherent
in using digital technology. These risks are not only physical but could
also be mental.

Issues
Some of the common physical dangers associated with digital
technology include carpal tunnel syndrome, eyestrain, headache,
and poor posture. These are usually caused by poor ergonomics
implemented on hardware. For example, keyboards are positioned
too high and the mouse is in a different level. This brings discomfort
to users, which could cause shoulder pain and other kinds of stress in
the arms. There are also mental risks when using digital technology.
Internet addiction is one of the common risks. Internet addicts
become dependent on technology and do not take their attention
away from their monitors.

Solution
Educators need to emphasize the risks and dangers of excessive use
of digital technology. It is also helpful to take breaks when using the
computer. When taking breaks, users can do simple stretching and
exercises. Internet addiction shouldn’t be taken lightly as well. It is
said that withdrawal symptoms of internet addiction are similar to
those of alcoholics.

Educators play a big role in encouraging students to use technology

responsibly. Schools can also invest in ergonomic computer devices.
Cheap ergonomic keyboards and mouse are available in the
market. They should evaluate their equipment if the students are
comfortable using them including chairs and monitors.

9. Digital Security

What is Digital Security? Digital Security is defined as the electronic

precautions to guarantee safety. Similar to protecting our homes
and possessions, we need to protect our digital information as well.
Digital Security understands that there are people who will try to steal
our identity so there are suggested measures on how to protect
personal and sensitive information.

Issues
Most issues lie in the lack of measures to protect data, be it hardware
or software. Leaving personal external hard drives around and not
adding password to personal computers allow people other than
the owner to access them, which will result in leak of personal and
sensitive information. There are also risks when we don’t regularly
update the antivirus software in our PC. Taking down Firewall
protection to allow apps to install can also pose some risks.

Solution
Students should be taught how to create strong passwords and to
keep their passwords to themselves. This can save and protect their
personal and sensitive information from hackers. Having strong
passwords can protect their social media accounts, personal
computers, and mobile phones. Constant updating of antivirus
software and virus definitions are also important to protect one’s PC
from attacks online. When firewalls are brought down, bring them
back up. It is also important that people are taught how to identify
websites that are harmful and links that can be dangerous. Students
should also be careful when downloading stuff from the internet.
One should carefully evaluate them before hitting that download
button.

While these Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship are important,

knowledge of them does not necessarily mean that a person is
already exercising responsible citizenship. Keith Heggart compared
it to claiming teaching citizenship to kids when they’ve only been
taught how to cross the street [6]. He further suggested introducing

TECHNOKIDS INC. 101

CHANGING THE WORLD

students to debates and discussions, encouraging them to go

beyond armchair activism, and showing students how to be
engaged with their democratic leaders.

Digital citizenship is more than just knowing what to or not to post. It’s
not just about securing your data, reporting bullies, or citing sources.
It is about contributing for the betterment of the society. We can do
more. There are lots tools we can use to advocate change.

Uploading and Website Management

TIPS ON CREATING A WEBSITE

Be Relevant – refrain from losing focus on what your website is about.

Keep it Short – internet users have a short attention span; therefore,

go straight to the point. People might lose interest if your webpage is
too long, or you need to click multiple buttons just to get to the right
page.

Make it Easy to Navigate – categorize your information in a way that

visitors can easily have access to your website content the most
minimal clicks as possible. Links help navigate users to pages they
need to go to.

Avoid Music – this can annoy your visitors. If you want to add music,
do not auto play and allow visitors the option to play the music on
their discretion.

Limit Images – Too many images might clutter your website or might
make it look unorganized. Find the balance between images and
text.

Add Some Personality – Avoid making your website too plain. There
are a lot of services that offer templates to remove the plainness of
your website.

Make it easy to maintain – Keep control of the branding and the look
of your website and update it when change is happening. Websites
that are not updated or show current information can be frustrating
to users.

Audit your website – Check that the content and links of your website
are correct

TECHNOKIDS INC. 109

need to do in your website. They should be able to accomplish
the task in the most efficient way possible.
 To do this analysis, one must first know about the tasks (e.g.
commenting on blog posts, answering the survey, creating an
account, signing a petition)
 Evaluate the task under various conditions:
o Learnability: How easy is it for users to learn and perform the
task? Are there help features to further assist in performing
the task?
o Intuitiveness: How obvious and easy is it to accomplish the
task?
o Efficiency: Are there ways to reduce the time it takes to
complete the task?
o Preciseness: How many errors are made in accomplishing
the task? What are the reasons for committing errors? What
are ways to improve the website in order to minimize the
committed errors?
o Fault Tolerance: How fast can the user recover after making
a mistake?
o Memorability: How easy can the task be done again?
o Affordance: Are interactive elements convenient to reach
and obviously interactive?

TECHNOKIDS INC. 111

Readability
 Not being able to read and understand the content and
interface of a website is a hindrance to the user’s ability to
perform the tasks.
o Ease of Comprehension: Is it easy to understand and
internalize? Are the words appropriate to the audience?
o Legibility: Is there enough contrast between text and
background? Are the font sizes big enough?
o Reading Enjoyment: Are the contents information
accurate? Will the readers enjoy and appreciate the
content? Do the font characteristics make reading easy,
or do they strain the eye?

Site Navigability
 Your website should allow the user to navigate and move
around your website through multiple pages with ease.
Interface components for navigability include navigating
menus, search boxes, links within the page, widgets, etc.
o Information Architecture: How organized are the
webpages? How are the navigational features
constructed?
o Findability: How easy is it to find something in your
website?
o Efficiency of Navigation: How fast and how many clicks
do the user need to do in order to get to the intended
page?

Accessibility
 Your website should be accessible to users. Accessibility is not
limited to addressing the concerns of those who are disabled
but the overall browsing situation. Difference devices and
browsers should be taken into consideration in building your
website. Website accessibility pertains to how well your website
deals with varying circumstances.
o Cross-Browser/Cross-Platform Compatibility: Does your
website work in as many browsing situations as possible?

112 TECHNOKIDS INC.

TECHNOBOOST Section 8

Is the website responsive (flexibility of the layout)

depending on how the user views it?
o Semantic HTML Markup: Are HTML Tags being used
correctly? Is there a quality and accuracy in the structure
of the webpage?
o Color Choice: Do the colors provide good contrast or
cause hindrance to people with poor vision or
colorblindness?
o Use of HTML Accessibility: Are the HTML features and
techniques that aid users with visual impairments being
used?

Website Speed
 Users deeply care about how fast they will be able to get the
information they need. Users prefer websites that are efficient
and perform better when trying to accomplish a task.
o Webpage Response Time: How fast does the entire
webpage load?
o Webpage Size: How big is the webpage?
o Code Quality: Does the website apply the best practices
for website performance?

User Experience
 User Experience tries to study and evaluates how the website is
used. It deals with perception that can vary from one user to
another. The user experience can be evaluated through user
feedback. You can gain a better understanding of how your
users feel about the site by asking them questions.
 Evaluating the user experience deals with the following:
o Fulfillment: Are users satisfied after interacting with the
website?
o Usefulness: Do users feel like they gained value after using
the website?
o Enjoyment: Did users enjoy the experience of interacting
with the website, or did it frustrate them or gave them a
burden?

learned regarding ICT. Students can use any form of media that is
publishable and sharable online.

Guide Questions:
 What is the impact of ICT to me and to the society?
 How did the activities in the past weeks change my worldview
of myself and the society?
 What new learnings did I gain after going through all the
activities we had in the past weeks?
 What are my new realizations about ICT?
