The Theory of Evolution

Biological evolution is the name for the changes in gene frequency in a population of
species from generation to generation. Evolution offers explanation to why species
genetically change over years and the diversity of life on Earth.
In 1859, Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species, which introduced the idea of
evolutionary thought which he supported with evidence of one type of evolutionary
mechanism, natural selection.
Over time the beak would become longer and those birds would survive. The next
mechanism, genetic drift, happens by chance. For example, a bug that is either red or
green. If a large portion of the red bug happens to get stepped on, the gene frequency for
this species is now changed. Mutation is another evolutionary mechanism that happens
by chance. Mutation is when the genetic material of an organism is altered. An example of
this is albinism which has altered the genes of several different animals.

A. Disease-resistant crops C. Environmental risks
B. Pest-resistant crops D. Mass production of medicines
For Nos. 23-25

Since genetically modified organisms (GMOs) first appeared at the beginning of

the 1990s, they have been widely adopted in agriculture. However, their newness
has raised a certain number of societal issues.
Farmers who use GMO technologies do so to increase productivity, either by
increasing production yields or financial returns. In 2017, an analysis of 147
studies carried out around the world over the previous 20 years stated, GM
technology has reduced chemical pesticide use by 37%, increased crop yields by
22%, and increased farmer profits by 68%.
In spite of this, the safety of consuming GMOs continues to be the issue that
elicits the greatest disparity in public opinion. Several Nobel prize winners urge to
re-examine the experience of farmers and consumers worldwide with crops and
foods improved through biotechnology, due to its health issues.
