Process Heat Transfer CH MId Paper

This document contains an exam for a Process Heat Transfer subject with 6 multiple choice questions. Question 1 asks to calculate the time required to cool a steel sphere from 550C to 90C, the heat transfer rate after 2 minutes, and the total energy transferred in the first 2 minutes. Question 2 asks to derive the unsteady state heat conduction equation and write the general heat conduction equation. Question 3 asks to calculate the heat loss rate, outside skin temperature, and heat transfer resistance for a composite furnace wall.

SUBJECT: Process Heat Transfer DATE:12-2-2019
BRANCH:Chemical Engineering Max. 15 Marks

1. A 15 mm diameter of mild steel sphere (k = 42 W/m oC) is exposed to cooling airflow at 20 oC resulting
in the convective coefficient h= 120 W/moC. Determine the following.
(i) Time required to cool the sphere from 550oC to 90oC.
(ii) Instantaneous heat transfer rate 2 minutes after the start of cooling
(iii) Total energy transferred from the sphere during the first 2 minutes.
For mild steel take: ρ=7850 kg/m3, CP=475 J/kg OC (5M)
OR
2. (i) Derive an unsteady state one dimensional conduction equation? (4M)
(ii) Write general heat conduction equation? (1M)
3. A composite wall of furnace consists of an inner layer of silica brick, 15 cm thick (k=1.04 W/m oC), and
an outer layer of insulating brick, 20 cm thick (k=0.2 W/m oC). The inside temperature of the furnace is
800 oC and the interface temperature is 705 oC. Calculate (a) the rate of heat loss through the furnace wall,
(b) the outside ‘skin temperature’ of the brick layer, and (c) the percentage heat transfer resistance offered
by the refractory layer. (5M)
OR
4. (i) Derive rate equation for the heat flow through composite sphere having three layers? (4M)
(ii) Write the significance of Biot number? (1M)
5. A cylindrical hot gas duct, 0.5 m inside radius, has an inner layer of fireclay bricks (k = 1.3 W/m oC) of
0.27 m thickness. The outer layer of 0.14 m thick, is made of a special brick (k = 0.92 W/m oC). The
brickwork is enclosed by an outer steel cover which has a temperature of 65 oC. The inside temperature of
the composite cylindrical wall of the duct is 400 oC. Neglecting the thermal resistance of the steel cover,
calculate the rate of heat loss per metre of the duct and also the interface temperature between the ceramic
layers. What fraction of the total resistance is offered by the special brick layer? (5M)
OR
6. (i) Derive steady state temperature distribution of plane wall with heat generation? (2M)
(ii) The inner and outer surfaces of a hollow cylinder are maintained at uniform temperature T 1 and T2
respectively. The cylinder of Length L has r 1 and r2 as the inside and ouside radii. The thermal
conductivity of the material of cylinder is temperature dependent and given by the equation
K= KO (1+αT+βT2)
Derive an expression for the rate of heat flow through the cylinder (2M)
(iii) Write about thermal contact resistance? (1M)
