Lecture 10 (Process Optimization Introduction)

The document discusses optimization of chemical processes. It defines optimization as using specific methods to determine the most cost-effective and efficient solution to a problem or design for a process. Optimization requires critical analysis of a process, defining a performance objective, and prior engineering judgment. The goal of optimization is to find process variable values that yield the best value of a performance criterion while balancing different variables. Optimization can occur at multiple levels including management, process design, and plant operations. Examples provided include determining plant locations, equipment sizing and layout, and operating equipment. The key elements of an optimization problem are an objective function to maximize or minimize and constraints limiting achievement of the objective function.

Optimization

Optimization is the use of specific methods to determine the most

cost-effective and efficient solution to a problem or design for a

process

What is Optimization

Any process can be represented by some equations or perhaps

solely by experimental data in a graphical form.

The goal of optimization is to find the values of the variables in the

process that yield the best value of the performance criterion.

There is a trade off between different variables.

Why Optimization

1. Improved yields, reduced pollutant

2. Reduced energy consumption

3. Higher processing rates

4. Reduced maintenance, fewer shutdowns

5. Better understanding of process (simulation)

But there are always positive and negative factors to be weighed

Elements of Optimization Problem

An objective function is defined which

needs to be either maximized or
minimized. The objective function may be
technical or economic.

Constraints, that limit the achievement of
