Assignment 1 2023
Assignment 1 2023
The geometric character of rock’s permeable pore space is in reality quite complicated
and may vary greatly from one rock type to another. In practice, it is impossible to counter
the pore-system geometry in a detailed and faithful way. Therefore, several idealized
models have been developed to approximate porous rock media and their varied
characteristics. Packing matters!
Estimate the porosity 𝜑 according to the following models, assuming r is the radius of
the sphere
1) Idealized Porous Medium Represented by Regular Cubic-packed Spheres
4) A core plug has a radius of 1.25*10-2 [m] and a length of 5.0*10-2 [m]. It is completely
saturated with brine having a density of 1200 [kg/m3]. The dry core plug weighted
5.1*10-3 [kg], and 10.4*10-3 [kg] when it was saturated with brine. Calculate the effective
porosity of the core plug.
5) We plan to conduct a seismic experiment on the groundwater side. For that, we must
do some preliminary checks to estimate possible observations. For that, we probed a dry
sandstone sample (which has a matrix density of ρ = 2.85 g/cm3) and a matrix bulk
modulus of 3.3 · 1010 Pa. The p-wave velocity under dry conditions is 2.9 km/s, and the s-
wave velocity is 1850 m/s. The measured porosity of the sample is 23%. What p- and s-
wave velocity can one expect when the sandstone is fully saturated with water
(ρ = 1 g/cm3 and k = 3 GPa)? Please document every step of the process.
6) Imagine the fluid within the sample is a substitute for oil with low and high viscosity
and water with different salinity. What tendencies do we expect for the vp and the vs for
the different fluids and what are the reasons for these?
7) Show that for a Poisson’s ratio of ν = 0 the vp/vs - ratio is √2. Show your derivation as
well. What does this mean for real world applications or real materials?
Please plot the distributions of the porosity, surface area, particle size, and pore size.
Additionally, please calculate the mean and median for these variables. Your plotted
figure should look like this.
