Earth Science Group 4 - Lab Report

The students collected 27 rocks and examined 5 more closely using a hand lens. They sorted the rocks by weight and found most light rocks had smooth surfaces while most heavy rocks had rough surfaces. The hand lens revealed each rock's texture, color, particle size and appearance. For example, one light rock had a rough texture, dull white color, medium size particles and a matte appearance. This analysis of rocks' physical properties supported identifying different types of rocks.

Laboratory Report

Analysis of Diverse Physical Properties From The Collected

Rocks And Lens Exposure

Hypothesis
It is hypothesized that if the hand lens/magnifying glass is used to espose the
external structure of a certain rocks with the given length - the distance from the
rocks, we will find out furiously the Physical Properties it holds that exhibited
distinct visual characteristics (Color, Appearance, Texture, Size or Particles).

Materials
• Hand Lens

• Rock Sample

Procedure
Students found a random place to collect some rocks, with the unlimited amount
are allowed to get. 27 rocks were gathered. Students filtered the clear rocks (no
soil contain) and was sorted according to its weight. Out of 27, 4 was heavy, 23
was light. The students reasoned that if they sorted based on its weight, they will
find out the properties with ease. They labeled the rocks with letters and weights.
For instance; A-Z for any rock and the Weight; Light (L) and Heavy (H). The
majority of Light rocks have smooth surfaces whereas the majority of heavy rocks
have rough surfaces. That being said, Light rocks are closely similar to each and
same with Heavy rocks. Students choosed their most favorite rocks for identifying
the properties and they are down to 5, 3 lights and 2 heavies. Students started to
examine the Light rocks with hand lens by using the given length (distance from
the rock to hand lens) that the teacher gave. After that, they examined the Heavy
rocks. They have gathered several properties.
Data Analysis

Table Below presents the results:

Rock Sample Texture Color Size or Appearance

Particles

J-Light Rough Dull White Medium Matte

F-Light Rough Golden Brown Small Shiny

S-Light Rough Chalk White Small Matte

G-Heavy Smooth Dark Grey Medium Grainy

H-Heavy Rough Crimson Large Unglazed/Dim

Brown

Above table revealed the Properties of the Rocks with the huge help of hand lens.

During their discoveries over the 27 random rocks, the Students noticed
something at the same time that all of them were at the constant shape which is
unperfectly rounded. By using their sense of touch, after rubbing their fingers
over the rocks, the surfaces feels uncomfortable, the roughness of the rocks
vibrates through their skin with a slight sharpness occasionally. During exposure
to bright light, rocks revealed their fine colors and they are Gray, Brown, White,
Golden, and Black. By also using the Hand Lens, Students saw particles enough to
reason their hidden small properties that were blurry to see by the naked eye.
They saw some Glitters, tiny dots, holes ranging from small to large and some
have none flat surfaces - a seemingly true unscratched rocks.

Conclusion
Students concluded that rocks have differences in nature. Students also
concluded that this information might use to determine different rocks that can
be found anywhere and name them by 3 classes of rocks according to the
processes that resulted in their formation. Rocks are of great resource value,
some directly and some as constituents of minerals. Rocks that are also significant
in different ways, and not just a useless matter.
