TOPIC: Safe and responsible use of ICT; Wikis.

Importance use of ICT.


➢ The use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) has increased. This has
helped people to do their task in a more convenient, easier, faster, and more efficient
way. However, behind all these are risk. Misuse of the internet, participating in
dangerous and illegal online activities, among others may put your safety at stake.
Therefore, safe, and responsible use of the internet and its application is a must.

Safety and Responsible use of ICT


1.Be Secure
-Keep password to yourself and not share them with anyone, even with your close friends.
-Always log out and log off your account on any the devise that you are using.
-Always lock your computer when you walk away from the screen.

2. Be Respectful
-Always be polite and use appropriate language.
-Do not access, create, store, or distribute files that could be thought of as offensive,
indecent or cause hurt or upset to anyone.
-Do not look at anyone else’s file without their permission.
- Know that bullying by the use of text, multimedia messaging, email or social sites is
unacceptable and may lead to very serious consequence.

3. Be Safe
-Do not share your personal information on other people’s.
-Be wary of emails that ask you for any personal information.
-Check with an adult about anything you see that concerns you or report it to a teacher.
-Do not put any personal details about other people into emails, posts, comments, or
updates.
-Never meet up with anyone offline that you have only meet online without a parent or
trusted adult.

4. Be Responsible
-Think carefully about the places you go online and keep focused when on learning
task.
-Take good care of the ICT equipment you use. Understand that if you are
irresponsible in the use of ICT, you may lose your access to it.
-Understand that you may be able to use your own device or mobile phone in school
only at agreed times. If you use it in class without permission, your device may be
confiscated, and your parent will be informed.

5. Be Legal
-Only take images or video of other pupils, friends or anyone with their full knowledge
and permission.
-Do not copy, upload, publish, distribute images or videos of others without their
permission.
-You should not copy the materials, music, videos or pictures from the internet and use
them in your own work unless they are copyright free.
-Remember that anything you can be traced back to you including your browsing
history and content that you may copy, upload, publish or distribute.

Wikis and the safety tips in using wikis


What is Wiki?
-A web application that allows collaborative editing of its content and structure by its user. Its
support hyperlinks and has simple text that allows user easily create new pages and cross links
between internal pages.
-The term wiki is a Hawaiian word that means “quick” or “fast”.

Proper and safe use of wiki


-Make sure all personal information and passwords are kept private. Never put any contact
details online and ensure passwords are difficult to guess.
-Be truthful in your content. Write only what is based on facts and real-life and not on opinions.
-Avoid using power foul words to people in general.
-Plan your wiki content carefully. Make sure your sources are reliable.
-Give credit where credit is due.
-Do not open emails from strangers and unknown sources. Email and attachments may contain
viruses or threats that can harm your computer.
-Not all information online are reliable. There are lots of information on the internets that are not
true.

Different types of wiki websites


1. Wikipedia-This is free, open, and multilingual online encyclopedia where any user can
collaboratively contribute and edit the article.

2. WikiWikiWeb-A word “wikiwiki” means “quick” or “hurry”. Originally developed by Ward


Cunningham. This is the oldest, open, easiest, and collaborative tool in the world.

3. Wiktionary -This is an online multilingual dictionary that contains the meaning, origin and
pronunciations of words.

4. Wikiversity-This site supports free learning communication, projects, materials, and other
learning resources that may be used in all levels, types and styles of education.

5. Wikitravel-This is a travel guide that uses a Wikimedia’s software. It provides information


about the history, people, culture, and background of different countries.

6. Wikiqoute-This is a collection of reference or qoutations from well-known people, books,


movies, etc.

7. Wikispecies-This is a directory of species of all forms of life ranging from animalia,


plantae, fungi, bacteria, etc.

8. Wikinews-This is a compilation of news story made possible through collaborative


journalism.

9. Wikibooks-This is a free library of educational books and manuals that maybe edited,
changed, and improved by anyone.
Steps in using Wiki
1. Open your browser (example: Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Mozilla Firefox.)
2. Type in the content that you want to look for in Wiki in the search bar
(example: historical events like the history of computer.)
3. Select the Wiki page from the results or findings from your previous search.
4. You will be directed to the website.
5. From there, you will find information about the topic you are searching for

What is blog?

1. It derived from the words Web and logs.


2. The types of blogs are usually ranked in their popularity based on the number of
searches made on a search engine.
3. Blogs also provide the readers facts and information about a place , a restaurant ,
menus or recipes, beauty tips, and fashion.
4. Business dictionary defines blog as “a website, similar to an online journal that includes
chronological entries made by individuals. It provides users with forums (or a comment
area) to talk about each posting.
Proper and safe use of blogs

Blogging can be useful for:


1. Helps improve reading and writing skills.
2. Makes them more creative.
3. Provides a tool for collaboration.
4. Fuels their desire for learning.

Be aware of the following internet safety tips by using blog.


1. Do not use any personal information such as last name, contact numbers and
others.
2. Do not post offensive photos.
3. Do not compete with ither bloggers.
4. Do not use your blogs to harm other people.

Explain the different and specific topics/issues found in each type of blog.
1. Fashion Blog- contains trend in fashion, seasonal clothing, new fashion styles/design
from well-known brands, prices, where to source, and the like.
2. Travel blog -contains experiences in travelling to other places both local and
international accompanied with pictures which include beautiful sceneries, places to
eat, hotel and lodging shops, and how to go to places using the internet.
3. Music blog -contains update in album releases of popular singer or bands about the
songs from local to international artist.
4. Food blog -Contains a place to eat, popular menu or recipes they love, and how to
go the cafeterias/ restaurants. There are also critiques of food eaten prices of food,
and food they recommend for the reader to visit.
5. Beauty blog -contains beauty products, how they are used, and what they do to the
skin, face, and body. There are also DIY (do-it- by yourself) beauty product. Review
on the well-known brand of customers, make-up looks, and how to do makeover are
interesting topics to read on.
Different steps in creating a blog.

1.Identify the content of your blogs.


2.Make it as informative and interesting as possible. Colorful pictures that you have
taken should be included.
3.Find the social media you are comfortable with.
4.Make an account on this website. Have the unique username. Fill up the details
needed on the website.
5.Log in to your new blog.
6.Post and share the blog you have created.
