Assignment 8-PnS

1. The problem involves approximating the probability of obtaining over 1100 hours of use from a stockpile of 25 batteries where the life of each battery is a random variable with mean 40 hours and standard deviation 20 hours. 2. The problem involves determining the sample size needed such that the probability that the sample mean differs from the population mean by less than 50 hours is at least 0.95 for light bulbs with a mean life of 40 hours and standard deviation of 100 hours. 3. The problem involves determining the number of components that must be stocked such that the probability of continual system operation for the next 2000 hours is at least 0.95, given the components have a mean lifetime of 100 hours and

Assignment No. 8

1. The life of a special type of battery is a random variable with mean 40 hrs and standard
deviation 20 hrs. A battery is used until it fails, at which point it is replaced by a new
one. Assuming a stockpile of 25 such batteries, whose lives are independent, use the
Central Limit Theorem to approximate the probability that over 1100 hrs of use can be
obtained.
2. Sylvania’s 40-watt light bulbs will burn a random time before failing. Let have
mean and standard deviation 100 hours. If of these bulbs are placed on test till they
burn out, resulting in observations ,…, , how large should be so that the
probability that differs by by less than 50 hours is at least 0.95?
3. A certain component is critical to the operation of an electrical system and must be
replaced immediately upon failure. If the mean lifetime of this type of component is
100 hours and its standard distribution is 30 hours, how many of these components must
be in stock so that the probability that the system is in continual operation is for the next
2000 hours is at least 0.95?
4. Let ,…, be i.i.d. ( , ). Find (3( ) > 5.58 ) .
5. Let ,…, , be i.i.d. ( , ) and let and denote the sample mean and

sample variance based on ,…, . Find the distribution of .

6. Let ,…, be a random sample from ( , ) population and ,…, be another

independent random sample from ( , ) population. Let , , , be the sample
means and sample variances based on and - samples respectively. Further, let
( ) ( )
= .

Determine the distribution of

( ) ( )
= , 0, 0.
7. Consider two independent samples- the first of size 10 from a normal population with
variance 4 and the second of size 5 from a normal population with variance 2. Compute

the > 3.21 , where and are the sample variances of the first and second

sample respectively.
8. The temperature at which certain thermostat are set to go on is normally distributed

with variance . Based on a random sample of size 11 find 0.394 .

9. Let and be independent (0, ) random variables. Find ( + ).

10. Let ,…, be a random sample from ( , ) population. For 1 < < , define

= ( ) . Find the distributions of = ,

( ) ( ) ( ) ( )( )
= , = , = and = .

11. Let , ,…, be a random sample from a (2, 4) population and let and
denote the sample mean and the sample variance respectively. Find
(2 0.3422 < < 2 + 0.4984 ).
12. Let ( ,…, ), ( , ,…, ) and ( , ,…, ) be independent random samples
from ( 1, 9), (1, 16) and (0, 9) populations respectively. Find the distribution of

13. Let ,…, be a random sample from a normal population with variance 2 and let
, ,…, be an independent random sample from a normal population with variance
4. Let and denote the variances of and samples respectively. Find

0.12057 < < 1.7903 .

14. Let ( ,…, ) be independent and identically distributed (3, 5) random variables.
Let and denote the sample mean and the sample variance respectively. Find
