Sports Assignment
Sports Assignment
1. What is the argument you will be addressing in your persuasive essay? Explain how the
argument is derived from your major, the major you are considering pursuing, or your field of
work.
My argument is “Should college athlete get paid for playing college sports?” and my major is Sports
management. Since a portion of sports management also deals in the financials of the sports players
and also, college athletes belong to an important genre of a sportsman, based on that, it can be said
that my argument has a deep connection with my majors.
2. What are three possible key points for your selected topic? How do they support your main
argument?
When college athletes perform on behalf of their institutions then they bring a huge amount of
revenue back to college.
The money to be paid to college athletes will help them financially in their studies.
Without money, sports at the college level is getting all dried up and incompetent.
All the above-mentioned points show that there is a strong need for paying college athletes and doing
so will not only help them in their studies, but it will give them something apart from studies when
they will leave college.
3. Who is the audience that will be reading your essay? What potential challenges will you have
supporting your argument with this demographic?
My target audience will be the officials of sports management at college level as well as college
athletes. The main challenge which I foresee in supporting my argument is to justify the need that
why college athletes deserve to get paid. Making it sound justified is going to be difficult for me.
4. What goal do you hope to accomplish with this essay? What will this essay need to be
successful?
I intend to persuade the readers of the essay that how important it is to pay college athletes and that
what would be the impact on college sports industry if the college level players will not get paid. A
thorough research and justifying statements will satisfy the readers and hence will help me in
achieving the main objective of this essay.
5. Potential resources are pieces of evidence that could be used to support your argument.
Provide a brief description of the sources that you used for the Annotations activity earlier in
this module and explain how they will reinforce your argument.
Zirin, D. (2015). An economist explains why college athletes should be paid. The Nation.
Retrieved from http://www. the nation. com/article/economist-explains-why-college-athletes-
should-be-paid.
This source will contribute towards the starting portion of the essay in highlighting the main
need for paying college athletes.
Parent, C. M. (2003). Forward Progress-An Analysis of Whether Student-Athletes Should Be
Paid. Va. Sports & Ent. LJ, 3, 226.
This particular source throws light on the introductory efforts made based on subject
argument. It also involves legislative measures that have been taken into account in order to
defend the payment related rights of the college level athletes.
Goldman, L. (1989). Sports and antitrust: Should college students be paid to play. Notre
Dame L. Rev., 65, 206.
Although this is an old resource, it has been used in order to highlight the restrictions which
are imposed on college athletes by NCAA. For example, the restriction imposed by NCAA on
payments of college athletes.
Wilbon, M. (2011). College athletes deserve to be paid. ESPN. com.
This is the main source based on which I will derive my argument defense. All the above-
mentioned key points have been extracted from this particular source.
6. Explain how the key points of your argument align with the supporting resources you just
described in Question #5.
The first source mentioned is directly related to my first key point. With the help of the
concept of sports economics, this source provides a brief of how revenue generated by college
athletes assist their parent colleges from where they belong.
The second and third source explains the need why it is of critical importance to pay the
college athletes hence it supports my second key point that how financial assistance can aid
college students in their studies.
My last key point and the last source are closely related to each other since the source is in
support of the key point that in what way college athletes deserve getting paid and how
paying them will add life to college-level sports.
7. Based on your argument, describe where integrating evidence would be most effective and
explain why.
As the literature review on the given topic indicates, the core of the problem in getting college athlete
paid lies on the fact that most of the sports management is not aware of the fact that in what ways the
money being paid to college athletes can have an impact on them as well as on the institutions they
represent. So, the integrating evidence will be most effective in justifying the reason why college
athletes deserve getting paid for their sports.
8. Describe a revision strategy that would be most effective in informing you while writing this
essay. Why would this strategy be effective?
Since I know my writing style, I do that in a very organized way. First, I pinpoint the main headers
which I will be using in essay along with sources I will be consulting. After that, I start writing the
main body under the headers. So, the most effective strategy would be to guide me on the initial
outline phase i.e. the phase in which I will have headers written. But if the revision comes after or
while I am writing the essay then I will be happy to incorporate that as well.
9. How can your own writing improve from receiving feedback from an outside party? How can
that feedback be integrated?
I believe that feedbacks are the most authentic way of improving your writing style. I would work to
stitch those feedbacks in my study based on the relevancy of feedbacks. For me, it would be very easy
to integrate those feedbacks in my writing then I will be picking only relevant ones and I know how to
blend the rightful comments of others in my study.
