ABSTRACT

Nowadays, the issue of poor Mathematics academic performance of students in Nigeria

has been of much concern to the government, parents, teachers and even the students themselves.
The quality of education not only depends on the teachers as reflected in the performance of their
duties, but also in the effective coordination of the school variables.
This research aims at pointing the problems associated with school variables and
Mathematics students' academic performance. Eight junior secondary schools were randomly
selected from Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State. The sample comprises of 240
students and twenty four teachers from the selected junior secondary schools which are divided
into two groups. In which each group contains four selected schools. Researcher - designed
students' and teachers' questionnaire was the instruments used for this study. Data analysis was
carried out using simple T- Test mean value.
The result showed that the learning of chemistry by majority of the students have been
greatly influenced by the intervention of school variables. This means that school variables has
effectively facilitated the students' performance in Mathematics. Parts of the recommendations
are: Government should appoint the Mathematics experts to teach in our schools. Those who are
yet to qualify should go for further studies in Universities and colleges of education. Teachers
should not relent the effort in the use of available school variables and in familiarizing the
student with the use of library. Students should be encouraged to remove the fear of difficulty of
the subject from their hearts. It was also recommended that Library should be equipped with
textbooks and other educational resources in each school.
