Art history- refers to the historical development and stylistic context of the objects of arts that
includes the major and minor arts.

Major Arts: Painting, Sculpture and Architecture

Minor Arts: Ceramics, furniture and other decorative

RENAISSANCE- art is marked by a gradual shift from the abstract forms of the
medieval period to the representational forms of the 15th century. Subjects grew from
mostly biblical scenes to include portraits, episodes from Classical religion, and events
from contemporary life.

IMPRESSIONISM-describes a style of painting developed in France during the mid-to-

late 19th century; characterizations of the style include small, visible brushstrokes that
offer the bare impression of form, unblended colour and an emphasis on the accurate
depiction of natural light.

POST-IMPRESSIONISM –Post-Impressionism was a predominantly French art

movement that developed roughly between 1886 and 1905, from the last Impressionist
exhibition to the birth of Fauvism. Post-Impressionism emerged as a reaction against
Impressionists' concern for the naturalistic depiction of light and colour.

FAUVISM- Fauvism is the style of les Fauves, a group of early 20th-century modern
artists whose works emphasized painterly qualities and strong colour over the
representational or realistic values retained by Impressionism.

EXPRESSIONISM-is a modernist movement, initially in poetry and painting, originating

in Northern Europe around the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to
present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for
emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas.

CUBISM- a revolutionary new approach to representing reality invented in around

1907–08 by artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. They brought different views of
subjects (usually objects or figures) together in the same picture, resulting in paintings
that appear fragmented and abstracted. Pablo Picasso.

DADAISM -a movement with explicitly political overtones – a reaction to the senseless

slaughter of the trenches of WWI. It essentially declared war against war, countering
the absurdity of the establishment's descent into chaos with its own kind of nonsense.

SURREALISM- aims to revolutionise human experience. It balances a rational vision

of life with one that asserts the power of the unconscious and dreams. The movement's
artists find magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny, the
disregarded and the unconventional.

ABSTRACT ART -is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a
visual reality but instead use shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its
effect. Strictly speaking, the word abstract means to separate or withdraw something
from something else.

POP ART- Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the United Kingdom and the
United States during the mid- to late-1950s. The movement presented a challenge to
traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular and mass culture, such as
advertising, comic books and mundane mass-produced objects.

ART APPRECIATION is the ability to interpret or understand man-made arts (in all
forms) and enjoy them either through actual and work-experience with art tools and
materials or possession of these works of art for one’s admiration and satisfaction.

In other words, art appreciation has something to do with understanding what does the
artist convey in his works and how does he feels when doing such works. Also in art
appreciation we will learn some historical events, kinds of culture, people’s experiences
feelings and their way of living.

Importance of Art Appreciation:

It can help the person make sense of his world by broadening his experience and
understanding of the things around them.

*It can help the person imagine even the unimaginable

*Is able to connect a person’s life and experience the past, the present, and the future
or sometimes simultaneously.

*Can help transport the individual to different places and culture through literature,
films, visual arts and other forms of art.

*Allows the individual to see himself, his family dynamics as well as his community
through different lens of great arts.

*enable the individual to better empathize with those who suffered and endured for
their lives through great art forms.

*Gives meaning to the data science provides. If Science give us empirical facts, tie these
facts together with theories and turn these facts with moral, emotional and spiritual
meanings.
