Assignment#2

This document provides information about a water transport system between two tanks (A and B) connected by a pipeline. It includes questions about: 1) Calculating the flow rate and pressures at points along the pipeline without valves. 2) Determining the type, location, and sizing of a control valve to maintain a minimum pressure of 2m. 3) Analyzing the impact of withdrawing flow from the pipeline on the control valve maintaining 100L/s flow to tank B.

Assignment No. 2- Valves

1- Water is being transported from Tank A to Tank B through a 9km 500mm

diameter pipeline (f=0.015). The system operates under static head difference
between the two tanks (60m). A plan and profile of the pipeline are shown in the
figures below.

 Find the flow rate between tanks A and B (neglect all local losses), and sketch
the TEL on the above profile. What is the pressure at points (2) and (3)?

 If it is required to install an automatic control valve to ensure that the minimum

pressure along the pipeline is not less than 2m (above zero guage pressure).
a. What is the required valve function (pressure reducing, pressure sustaining,
or rate of flow control)? Where is the most suitable location for the valve?
b. Find the required pressure drop through the valve and calculate the flowing
discharge through the valve while in operation. What is the pressure now at
points (2) and (3)?
c. What is the required percent opening of the valve and the equivalent head
loss coefficient Kv through the valve.

The 300mm control valve in the above system is used to control the flow between
tanks A and B. Inherent valve closing characteristics for the control valve are given
in the table below.

If the flow in the system when the valve is fully open is 220 lit/sec
a. Find the fully open valve flow coefficient (Cvfull) in lit/sec/m0.5 (neglect all
other local losses).
b. What is the flow in the system if the valve is only opened at 40% (% opening
is 40%)

3- For the water transport system shown below water is being transported from tank
A (Water level 200m) to tank B (Water level 155m). The pipeline connecting the
two tanks is 3500m long, 300mm in diameter, and has a constant friction coefficient
f=0.012. A automatic Flow Control Valve (FCV) is installed just upstream Tank B
to limit the flow to tank B at 100 lit/sec.

b. How would the valve react if 50 lit/sec is withdrawn from the pipeline at
junction J (station 2000)? Calculate the flow rates in the pipes and sketch the
new TEL on the above profile.
c. What is the maximum flow rate that can be withdrawn from the pipe at junction
J without decreasing the flow rate entering tank B below 100 lit/sec?
