CASEIPHONE

The document discusses some of the ethical issues related to smartphone use, particularly for children and teenagers. It notes that smartphones can enable cyberbullying and cheating in schools, which are unethical behaviors. For children and teenagers, excessive smartphone use can negatively impact their health by reducing physical activity and social interaction, and interfering with sleep. It can also influence unhealthy eating habits through advertising and mindless snacking while using phones. While smartphones provide benefits, their overuse can reduce cognitive skills as people rely on them for answers instead of thinking for themselves. The problem of reduced cognitive skills from smartphone use may be addressed by limiting phone use and practicing solving problems and thinking without relying on the device.

1. Identify the problem described in this case study. In what sense is

it an ethical dilemma?

Smartphones have become a very important part of our lives. But most of the people
are unaware of the various harmful effects caused by it. Now a days it has become
important to keep in mind the ethics of using smartphones.

Being ethical means to know the difference between right and wrong and following the
right path. Unaware of the various harmful effects the use of smartphones, have
become unethical in some ways.

Smartphones carry personal information which therefore can lead to various problems if
not handled properly. It is required to maintain great care of the personal information
available in our devices specially portable ones like smartphones.

Ethical dilemma can be seen in security breach and cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is an
act where in various unethical activities like posting threats, rumors and sexual remarks
are done through the use of internet. It can increase the chances of suicidal ideation.

Use of smartphones in the school and colleges have also become common now a days.
Which encourages the student to cheat in tests and exams and using less own brains
and depending so much on phones, which is also unethical.

Terrorism is one of the very dangerous factor which nobody can imagine that it can be
done through smartphones. But it is the sad reality that most of such things are also
happening now a days by breaching the very law of ethical use of technology.

Care has to be taken while using the technology. If it has various advantages doesn't
mean that one should ignore the negative impacts of it.

2. Should restrictions be placed on children’s and teenagers’

smartphone use? Why or why not?

Most of the studies and researches have shown that the use of smartphones is not
recommended to the children below 12 years of age.

Children under 4 years of age must not be allowed to use smartphones and above age
childrens should use smartphones only under the supervision of their parents.

During the last five decades, the use of technology has grown rapidly. The use of
television and social media is common now a days. In the modern era, most of the
things have become easier and convenient as well as helpful. But for the childrens and
teenagers they have proved to be harmful in several ways:
Studies have shown that most of the children are facing the problem of obesity which is
the main area of concern as their health is adversely affected by the alarming increase
in the obesity rate specially in the western countries.

Childrens now a days are spending most of their time on social media instead of
meeting their peers or friends physically, it is affecting their mental health because they
are becoming less social and less active.

Lack of sleep, this problem can also be seen in the childrens due to the over usage and
addiction of smartphones.

Over eating caused due to the mind diversion is common these days, mind diversion is
caused by the television and smartphones, where most of the childrens are becoming
habitual of eating unhealthy food and in large quantities, creating many health related
problems.

Advertising on TV and social media ads are also impacting the childrens in many ways.
Some ads make them stubborn as they demand the things which are shown on TV and
smartphones. Other things include their negative behavioural changes and harmful
lifestyle by doing injurious activities shown in the ads.

All and all the use of smartphones is not suitable for the childrens, they must have to
focus on their studies and also parents and teachers must ensure that they must
indulge the childrens in various other physical activities.

3. Can the problem of smartphones reducing cognitive skills be

solved? Why or why not? Explain your answer.

Cognitive skills are defined as the skills of the brain which allows to utilize information
and perform various essential funcitons like listen, think, understand, justify, question
and pay close attention.

But, what happens to our cognitive skills when we have smartphones in our reach.
Cognitive skills get reduce while keeping smartphones, either by using them or keeping
them in our reach.

Mostly part of our brain remain dependent on the use of smartphones for getting various
answers and problem solving approaches instead of using our brains for doing these
things.

Experiments have shown that cognitive skills reduce even only we have smartphones in
our reach, even if we are not using it.

The problem of using cognitive skills can be solved by reducing the use of smartphones
in such a way that we should try solving and thinking on the problem or any information
which we think is helpful to us without the use of smartphone. By doing this we enable
our mind to function in a creative manner and logical thinking start working.

Even if we are not using smartphones and the smartphones are lying within our reach,
we won't be able to perform well because most of the time our mind would remain busy
on focusing on the smartphone and the various functions it has to ease our thinking
skills.

It is advisable to increase cognitive skills as much as possible, use of smartphones is

applicable on those things which requires less time or are very urgent and beyond our
reach.
