Set Up Guide
Set Up Guide
XL
The
included
OctaLaunch
XL
templates
have
been
created
to
give
deep
level
control
over
the
Elektron
Octatrack
with
the
Novation
Launch
Control
XL.
As
the
Octatrack
is
a
menu
based
system
it
is
only
possible
to
control
a
single
page
of
parameters
of
a
single
track
at
any
one
time.
The
OctaLaunch
XL
templates
can
been
laid
out
across
the
8
available
User
templates
on
the
Launch
Control
XL
to
deliver
greater
control
over
each
of
the
Octatrack’s
audio
tracks
parameters.
Track
Layout
The
included
templates
are
a
suggested
set-‐up
for
the
Octatrack
although
it
is
very
easy
to
use
the
Launch
Control
XL
editor
software
to
create
your
own
templates
for
any
external
MIDI
device.
Simply
refer
to
the
user
manual
of
your
device
to
find
out
the
correct
CC
and
Note
messages
required
for
control.
Then
program
the
appropriate
controller
on
the
Launch
Control
XL
using
the
editor
software.
TRACK
In
this
particular
layout
each
Track
template
retains
the
volume
and
mute
controls
across
audio
tracks
1
-‐8
meaning
you
will
always
have
access
to
each
audio
track’s
volume
and
mute
controls
on
the
Launch
Control
XL’s
faders
and
track
buttons
regardless
of
which
template
is
currently
selected.
The
layout
of
the
track
templates
is
as
follows:
NB:
EFT
=
Effects
page
(therefore
EFT1(4)
=
Effects
page
1,
control
4)
Master
Track
layout
There
is
also
a
Master
channel
template
which
also
gives
full
access
to
the
volume
and
mute
controls
on
all
tracks.
These
are
assigned
to
the
faders
and
track
buttons
of
the
Launch
Control
XL.
The
Master
channel
template
also
gives
limited
access
to
the
effects
pages
controls
across
all
tracks.
The
Master
channel
layout
is
designed
to
be
used
when
the
Octatrack
is
set
to
use
the
Master
Channel
on
track
8
NB:
EFT
=
Effects
page
(therefore
EFT2(6)
=
Effects
page
2,
control
6)
Set-‐up
Launch
Control
To
set-‐up
the
Launch
Control
XL
you
will
need
to
use
the
free
Launch
Control
XL
editor
software
available
from:
http://uk.novationmusic.com/support/product-‐downloads?product=Launch+Control+XL
Once
this
is
installed
you
can
begin
to
populate
the
user
templates
on
the
Launch
Control
XL
1. Connect
the
Launch
Control
XL
via
USB
to
you
computer
2. Click
the
File:Load
button
and
navigate
to
the
OcatLaunch
XL
template
you
wish
to
use
3. Once
loaded,
click
on
the
Device:Save
button
4. Choose
the
User
Template
you
wish
to
overwrite
with
the
new
OctaLaunch
XL
template
(eg
Track
1
saved
to
Template
1
etc.)
5. The
template
will
now
be
flashed
to
the
Launch
Control
XL’s
User
template
1
and
will
be
stored
in
there
until
overwritten.
This
will
be
stored
in
the
Launch
Control
even
through
power
cycles.
Octatrack
The
Octatrack
will
need
to
be
set
to
receive
both
MIDI
CC
and
Note
information
to
control
the
tracks.
To
make
sure
this
is
set-‐up
correctly
1. Navigate
to
the
MIDI
Control
Page
FUNC+Project,
select
MIDI
with
the
navigation
arrows
then
press
the
right
arrow
to
access
the
CONTROL
page
2. In
the
MIDI
CONTROL
page
make
sure
that
‘AUDIO
CC
IN’
and
‘AUDIO
NOTE
IN’
are
checked
NB:
AUDIO
CC
OUT
and
AUDIO
NOTE
OUT
can
be
set
to
either
‘INT’
or
‘INT
+EXT’
although
the
‘INT+EXT’
will
pass
the
control
information
sent
by
the
Launch
Control
XL
back
out
of
the
Octatrack.
It
may
be
preferable
to
change
these
settings
to
‘INT’
to
save
any
unwanted
control
of
further
MIDI
devices.
Connecting
the
Launch
Control
XL
and
Octatrack
together
Connecting
the
Launch
Control
XL
to
the
Octatrack
with
a
Computer
If
you
are
using
a
computer
you
can
use
the
Launch
Control
XL
to
control
any
external
MIDI
device
without
the
non-‐official
firmware
update
although
you
will
still
need
to
use
a
MIDI
interface
to
send
the
MIDI
data
to
the
Octatrack.
You
will
need
to
set
up
a
MIDI
channel
in
your
DAW
software
and
set
the
MIDI
input
to
receive
MIDI
exclusively
from
the
Launch
Control
XL.
As
the
Octatrack
receives
messages
on
MIDI
channels
1-‐8
to
control
the
audio
track
parameters
you
also
need
to
set
up
an
Omni
channel
output
for
your
MIDI
interface
within
your
DAW
software.
If
your
software
(such
as
Ableton
Live)
does
not
allow
an
Omni
channel
output
you
may
need
to
set
up
8
individual
channels
to
pass
the
MIDI
data
from
each
individual
channel.
You
may
also
need
to
switch
a
MIDI
monitor
signal
to
input
to
allow
the
MIDI
information
to
pass
through
in
real
time.
This
is
easy
enough
to
do
and
an
example
can
be
seen
in
the
following
image
NB
the
monitor
switch
in
this
Ableton
Live
example
is
set
to
‘IN’
to
allow
the
passing
through
of
the
MIDI
data.
To
connect
the
Launch
Control
XL
to
the
Octatrack
simply
connect
the
MIDI
output
of
your
MIDI
interface
and
connect
to
the
Octatrack’s
MIDI
input.
Connecting
the
Launch
Control
XL
to
the
Octatrack
without
a
Computer
Using
the
(currently)
non-‐official
firmware
update
it
is
now
possible
to
control
the
Octatrack
without
the
neccessity
of
a
computer,
however
a
USB
Host
to
MIDI
converter
will
be
required.
There
are
several
of
these
devices
available
including
(but
not
exclusive
to):
Kenton
MIDI
USB
HOST
mkii
Bomes
Bomebox
(Firmware
update
not
required)
Teenage
Engineering
OPLAB
iConnectivity
iConnect
4+
To
connect
the
devices
simply
plug
the
USB
cable
from
the
Launch
Control
XL
into
the
USB
Host
device
and
then
take
the
MIDI
output
and
connect
from
the
USB
Host
device
and
connect
to
the
MIDI
input
of
the
Octatrack.
The
connection
is
now
made
and
the
Launch
Control
XL
will
now
control
the
Octatrack.
