A LESSON PLAN FOR WEEK 9 ENDING 8TH NOVEMBER, 2019

Date: 4TH NOVEMBER – 8THNOVEMBER, 2019

Class: S.S.1
Subject: COMPUTER SCIENCE

Lesson Plan Topic: OUTPUT DEVICES

Heading
Age/Level/Number ±13/SS1/30 Students/Mixed
of Learners/Sex
Main Aim(s) At the end of the lesson, the students should be
able to explain the meaning of output devices
Subsidiary Aims By the end of the lesson, the students should be
able to:
(i) Explain the meaning output devices
(ii) Explainthe types of output devices
(iii) State the functions of each output devices

Personal Aim To meet up with the allotted time to each stages of

the lesson and the three (3) styles of learning.
Assumption / Entry The students have learnt output devices in their
Behavior junior secondary school
Anticipated Problem Few output devices may be strange to some of the
students
Possible Solution The teacher explains to the students that apart from
the popular output devices known to them, there
are some recent ones they will be learning
Instructional Media Textbooks, Computer system, internet, projector
Procedure Step I: Meaning ofoutput devices
Step II: Types of output devices
Step III: Functions of each output devices
Interactive Pattern Teacher to Student (T-S)
Evaluation (Learners) The teacher evaluates the learners by asking the
following questions:
(i) What are output devices?
(ii) List the types of output devices
(iii) State 2 functions each of various output
devices
Evaluation (Teacher) The teacher evaluates himself based on the
responses of the learners to the evaluation, if the
responses are not satisfactory, the teacher revisits
the lesson.
Summary Output devices are those hardware components of
the computerhelps computer end users to obtain or
see the results of the data inputted in a clear,
unambiguousand understandable form. E.g printer,
monitor, plotter, speaker, projector.
Homework List 5 output devices other than the ones given to
you by the teacher

OUTPUT DEVICES
Input devices are those hardware components that enables computer end
users to view or obtain the results of processed data from the system in a
clear, unambiguous readable form. It is the output devices that returns
information (processed data) to the end users. Examples include Monitor,
speaker, projector, printer, plotter etc.
PRINTER
This is an output component that brings out text, pictures, graphics from
the computer system into a paper form popularly called hard copy. The
printer prints what is in the computer screen to the paper in a clear,
readable form.
The printer is connected to the computer system through a USB port either
at the back or front of the system unit using a cable.

CLASSIFICATION/TYPES OF PRINTERS
 Impact printer:This is the kind of printer that prints by striking
character, ribbon and paper together physically. E.g Dot-Matrix,
Line printers, character printers etc.
Characteristics of Impact Printers

a) They carry out their printing by impressing head against paper.

b) They make noise while printing.
c) They are generally slow while printing.
d) They use ribbon to do their printing just like in the case of
typewriter.

 Non-Impact Printer: This is the type of printer that prints texts or

graphics on paper without physically striking the paper. They are the
type of printer that uses cartridges. E.g Inkjet, Thermal printers,
LaserJet, Deskjet etc.

Characteristics of Non-Impact Printers

a. They do not produce noise while printing
b. They make use of cartridge
c. They do not strike the paper while printing.
MONITOR
This happens to be the most popularly used output device. It can also be
termed Visual Display Unit (VDU). It is like a television screen that is
capable of displaying the result of processed data on the screen. Without
the monitor, users cannot see what they are doing on the computer.
CLASSES OF MONITOR
Computer monitor can be generally classified by the way they display
colours.
i. Monochrome: This displays information in just one colour (black &
white) but the background is usually black.
ii. Colour monitor: These are monitors that are capable of displaying
multiple colours and different colour background. It is the best in
displaying graphical designs. The colour monitors can be broken
down into;
a. Colour Graphic Adapter (CGA): displays 14 colours
b. Enhanced Colour Graphic Adapter (ECGA): displays up to 16
colours.
c. Video Graphic Adapter (VGA): displays up to 256 colours.
TYPES OF MONITORS
1. Cathode Ray Tube (CRT): uses vaccum tube that contains a shadow
mask, which is a fine mesh made of metal fitted to the shape and size
of the screen.
2. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): also called flat panel monitors which
creates images with special kind of liquid crystal that is transparent
but when charged becomes opaque. Smart phones, digital television
uses LCD.
3. Light Emitting Diode (LED)

FUNCTIONS OF MONITOR
 Used in watching computer video and playing games.
 Used to display texts and graphics on screen to the user.
 It is used for displaying written computer programs.
 It helps computer engineers to detect the troubleshooting messages.

PLOTTER
Plotters are special kind of output devices that is just like a printer except
that it prints large format images and texts such as banners, bill boards,
CAD engineering drawings etc. It is usually slow in printing especially the
table plotters.

TYPES OF PLOTTERS
 Table plotter: uses two robotic arms each of which holds a set of
coloured ink pens, felt pens or pencils.
SPEAKERS
This is an electromechanical transducer which converts electrical signal
into sound. Computer speakers range in quality and price which are
typically small, plastic and mediocre sound quality.
FEATURES OF SPEAKERS
a. Controls for volume and bass and treble.
b. It has a remote volume control.
c. It has a 3.5mm Leadphone jack.
d. It has an LED power indicator.
FUNCTIONS OF COMPUTER SPEAKERS
1. They are used to play music recorded in various disk (CD and DVD)
2. They are output devices.
3. They produce sound from the computer system to the user.
4. Computer operators listens to music and sounds through the
speakers.
