Practical 04 - Can You Configure A Network

This document provides a networking scenario for a lab assignment and includes questions to answer. It describes the network configurations for Company A with two locations, a Cisco Cache Engine, and Company B. It includes details on the internal and external IP addresses for each router and notes VPN connections between the company locations. Students are asked to configure the scenario in Cisco Config Maker and answer 5 questions about internal/external IP mismatches, VPN purposes and protocols, broadcast/collision domains, connection types (ISDN, PPP, asynchronous), and missing router security features. The report must be submitted in .doc and printed format and cannot copy others' work without citation.

Computer Networks Lab

Version 1.0
Can you Configure A Network?

When I am making you comfortable with how you are able to configure some small
real time scenarios with Cisco Config Maker, the following scenario should be done
by you. The print copy of the scenario should be given. The questions in the end of
this sheet will have to be answered in the report.

Company A:

 PC1 and PC2 connected to a hub

PC3 and PC4 connected to another hub
those two hubs are connected to a switch
that switch is connected to a router
 Router’s Internal IF address 192.168.2.0/24
Router’s External IF address 200.200.200.1/30 (ISDN)

Company A Head Office:

 PC5, PC6 and PC7 are connected to a hub

That hub is connected to a switch
A server is connected to that switch
That switch is connected to a router
 Router’s Internal IF address 10.0.0.0/8
Router’s External IF address 204.0.0.1/30 (Asynch)

Cisco:

Cisco Cache Engine is connected to a LAN

That LAN is connected to a router
 Router’s Internal IF address 172.16.0.1/16
Router’s External IF address 200.200.100.1/30 (ISDN)

Company B:

PCB1 and PCB2 are connected to a LAN

That LAN connected to a router
 Router’s Internal IF address 192.168.100.0/16
Router’s External IF address 203.203.203.2/30 (PPP)

Nb. All routers are connected to the Internet

Nb. VPN from A to A head office and A head office to B.

Questions to be answered

1. Why there is a mismatch between the internal interface and external interface
IP address of the router?
2. What is the purpose of VPN? Can you name name(s) of tunnelling
protocol(s)?

3. How many broadcast domain(s) and collision domain(s) exist in the Company
A and Company A Head Quarter network?
4. Write very short notes about ISDN, PPP and Asynchronous connections.
5. In the given network, I did not implement two very important features on the
routers. Can you say what those are? One is to hide the internal network from
outside and one is to protect the internal network from outside attack.

Deliverable:

The report should contain introduction, scenario configuration from Cisco Config
Maker, answer of the questions and conclusion.

The report must be delivered both in .doc format and in printed format. I will not
accept any hand written report.
You should not copy other people’s work. If you take a reference from the Internet or
other source, then appropriately state them in the end of your report. You will be
penalized a resubmission if you copy any of your classmate’s work (that classmate
will be penalized too for this) or if you take ideas from the Internet or other source
but do not refer to them at all.
