Anjanam

Anjana refers to collyrium or eye medicines that are applied topically to the eyes. ANJANAM

INTRODUCTION:

Topical application of the drug in the form of /paste/ thick liquid into the conjuctival fornices with an
applicator.

The word ‘Anjana’ is derived from the root ' Anakti Anena Anjanam’ that which spreads in the eye is
Anjana.

व्यक्तरूपेषु दोषेषु शुद्धकायस्य केवले नेत्र एवं स्स्िते दोषे प्राप्तमञ्जनमाचरे त ्। (सु.उ. 18/51)

Anjana is indicated when dosas are fully manifested and are localised in the eye.

Contra-indications: In acute inflammatory conditions.

1. Srama: Tiredness
2. Udävarta: Upward movement of gases
3. Rudita: Grief or weeping
4. Madya: Alcohol intake
5. Krodha: Anger
6. . Bhaya: Fear.
7. Jwara:fever
8. Vega aghata: suppression of natural urges
9. Sirodosa: Disease of head

Drug used: Compound drugs prepared of metals, minerals and herbs Generally antimony lead and tin
compounds are frequently prescribed

Dose: Harenu matra

Post Anjana Karma- Pratyanjana

CLASSIFICATION OF ANJANA:-

On the basis of karma:-

According to sharangadhara and susruta 3types:

• lekhana anjana – kshara tikshna dravyas


• rōpaņa anjana -kashaya tikta dravyas
• Snehana anjana- madhura dravyas

According to vagbhata 4types:

• Lekhana anjana
• Ropana anjana
• snehana anjana
• dristi prasdana anjana
On the basis of oushadha kalapana:-

गुटिकारसचूर्ाानन त्रत्रववधान्यञ्जानन तु । यिापूवं बलं तेषां श्रेष्ठमाहुमानीवषर्ः ।।

Based on nature of medicine:-

Lekhana anjana:- - Scraping Collyriums

तत्र पञ्च रसान ् व्यस्तानाध्य एक रस वर्जितान ् ॥ पञ्चधा लेखनं युञ्जाद् यथा दोष अतर्रितः । नेत्र
वर्त्ि शिरा कोि स्रोतः िङ्
ृ गाटकाक्षित || ्ुख नासा अक्षिश ः दोष्ोजसा सावयेत्तु तत ्। सु.उ.१८/५२-५५॥

Predominant dösha – for kapham. Drugs for anjanam – kashaya, amla, katu rasaDravyas. Oushada
kalpana-vartti/piņdam.

Šalaka – copper. Time of application-morning. Indications-corneal opacities, vartma röga, arma etc.
Actions/purpose – lekhanam / to remove unwanted doshas and malas.

Ropana anjana:

Predominant dosha – for pitha kapha. Dravyas used – kashaya, tikta rasa dravyas. Oushadha kalpana –
rasa kriya.

Šalāka – iron.

Time of application-morning and afternoon. Indications-After subsiding inflammation and oedema.

Purpose-rōpana/ healing and there by remove dōshas Prasadanajana:

Predominant dösha-for vata and pitta.

Dravyas used-madhura, sīta dravyas. Oushadha kalpana-curņam.

Šalaka – silver, gold. Time of application – as emergency araise.


Indications – when eyes become tired due to tikshņa anjana & likewise other conditions. Purpose – vata
pitta samana.

Materials required:- Anjana dravya, Śalaka, Chair and table, Sterilised cotton, Kshalana dravya, Device for
hot water etc

Anjana bheda based on karma:

व्यक्तरूपेषु दोषेषु शद्

DOSAGE OF ANJANA:- depends on its form, potency and action. Minimum dose should be taken for

For tikshņānjana-2 salākas. Maximum for mrdu anjana-3 salākas.

Dose for gulika/ vartti-harēņumātra (for lekhana), dwiharēņu mätra (for rōpana), arddha harēņu mātra
for prasadana.

Dose for rasakriya-tri vidanga mätra (uttama – mrdu vīrya), dwi vidanga mätra (madhyama- madhya
virya), vidanga matra (hina- tikshņa vīrya)

Dose for curna anjana: dwiśalāka (lekhana), triśśalāka (rōpaņa), catuśśalāka (prasādana)

अञ्जन काल/ TIME OF ADMINISTRATION:

यिादोषं प्रयोज्यानन तानन रोगववशारदै ः अञ्जनानन यिोक्ताननप्राहसायाह्ररात्रत्रषु ।।(सु. 3. 18 /57)

Should be done at pratha(early morning) saya(noon) and rathti(night)

Should not be done when is too cold or too hot or windy or cloudy

• Most approved time is morning and afternoon.

Anjana vidhi:
Preparation of the patient:- kaya södhanam- may or may not, sira: shaman-may or may not. Patient uld
be mentally prepared. No fear or doubt about the procedure. Ensure normal sleep & normal bowels.

Preparation of the room: spacious, devoid of wind and sun, normal temperature and light, avoid
minations, don't allow the patients to sit under illuminated light, avoid A/C rooms.

Šalaka:- it should be selected according to nature of disease and type of anjanam. Lekhana anjana-made
Copper, Rōpana anjana - made of iron & Prasadana anjana - silver and gold or finger tips

Qualities of salaka:- conveniently long- 10 angulas (4-6 inches). Convenient shape-middle portion is La
(convenient to hold). Both ends are bud shaped so that no harm to the eye with salāka.

PRADHANA KARMA:- hold the lid firmly with one hand and expose the conjunctiva. Take anjanadrávya
on salaka with other hand. Apply medicine along the inner side of lid. Move salaka from medial thus to
outer canthus and vice versa. Close the lids for 1-2 mts. Move the eyeball slowly inside the closed lids.
After subsiding the foreign body sensation, watering, burning sensation etc kshälanam should lone. After
kshälana, eye should be cleaned- hold the lids firmly, but gently with one hand-if needed evert it. Take a
piece of clean cotton in the other hand and remove the remnants of medicine and clean the (Iface gently

Effects of properly applied collyrium


Signs of proper administration of collyrium – Anjana samyak yoga lakshana

o Vishada -clarity in eyes


o Laghu -feeling of lightness in eyes
o Anasravi – cessation of discharges
o Kriyapatu – eye becomes active, i.e. normal functions and perception are restored
o Sunirmalam – eye looks clean and attractive
o Shanta upadravam complications get reduced

AFTER CARE:- don't rub the eyes. Don't expose to heat and wind. Avoid travel or journey. Don't apply
any other medicine in the eye at least for 1-2 hours. Don't cry.

PRATYANAJANAM:- it is an anjana karma applied when the eyes are tired, due to the application of

kuzhampu/Nayanamṛtam kuzhampu/ Nētrām tam etc

Anjana kalpana :

• Brihatyadi varti- all kinds of vataja netra roga


• Sumana korakadi varti- all types of pitta and raktaja netra roga
• Pilla rogahara anjana- relieve timira,netra krimi and pilla rogas
• Dristiprada varti – improves eye sight
• Curnajana-expels dosa in kaphaja netra roga and kaca roga
• Gairikadi gutikanjana-all vataja eye diseases and vatahisyanda
• Chandrodaya varti- timira,arma(Pterygium)
• Guduchi rasakriya anjana- vascular disorders of retina, optic nerve diseases
• Haritaki anjana- kaphaja abhisyanda
• Yoganjana- useful in lid disease
• Chandraprabha varti -with water-timira,with gomutra- pistaka,with honey- patala roga
