Module Title

This document provides details for Coursework 1 which includes two tasks assessing skills in designing shallow foundations and comparing metal roofing materials. Task 1 involves designing 16 concrete pad foundations for a 5-story commercial building and assessing foundation failure risks. Task 2 requires identifying components of concrete and steel portal frame structures, comparing metal roofing materials based on criteria like density and cost, and determining the best material. The word limit for each task is 1000 words. Students must submit Tasks 1 and 2 together in a single PDF by November 17th at 11:59 pm.

Re-assessment hand-in
Deadline date:

Return of Feedback Date and Marks and Feedback on your work will normally be provided within
format 20 working days of its submission deadline via Moodle.
Assessment Summary Coursework 1 includes two tasks, 25% each:

Task 1: Design a shallow foundation for a medium-rise

commercial building in Birmingham City Centre using 16
concrete pad foundations. (1000 word)

Task 2: Identify, using accurate construction technology, the

components used in both concrete and steel portal frames for
large-span, single-storey industrial buildings and compare key
advantages and limitations of using a soft metal roof covering
(lead, rubber, steel) in portal frame building. (1000 word)

CW1: Task 1 & 2 Detailed BriefPage

Mark as done

Task 1:

You have been commissioned by your client EBE to design the foundation for a 5
storey medium-rise office building in Birmingham City Centre, using 16 concrete pad
foundation. The site is surrounded by two medium-rise office block on both sides.
There is vacant land on the back of the site. You need to bear in mind adjacent
foundations which need to be supported when the site is excavated to avoid any
likely uneven settlements of adjacent buildings.
In order to complete the task you were given the following information:

The total Gross External Area (GEA) of the building (20 m x 25 m= 500 m2)

The combined load of the building including Imposed/Dead load, Live load, and
Environmental load = 300 kN/m2.

The thickness of the foundation (T) = 0.40 m (This can be changed to enhance the
rigidity of the foundation as a matter for you to decide).

The cross-section of the concrete columns (0.40 m x 0.40 m)

The soil type at Birmingham city centre is predominately stiff clay of a bearing capacity
(150- 300 KN/m2) at 2 m depth, very stiff clay soil (300-600 KN/m2 )at 4 m and then
changed into strong sandstones at 8 m depth. The bearing capacity of the sandstone is
4000 KN/m2. You can use Google Map and Digimap to do further geological
searches. Access via https://www.bcu.ac.uk/library and select Digimap from A-Z
Databases.

1. Calculate the total loading imposed by the 5 storey building and identify the bearing
pressure imposed on Each concert pad foundation.

2. Identify the depth of foundation D ( this refers to the depth of the base of the
foundation below the ground level).

3. Identify the Area of the foundation by multiplying Length (L) x Breadth (B) and
decide what changes need to be made to ensure that the loadings are uniformly
distributed and safely transferred to the soil underneath). Apply the 3P Rule to
determine the dimensions of the foundation.

4. Identify the q value per each pad by applying the equation q = P/(L x B) KN/m2
(refer to Shallow Foundations ppp slide 12 for more information)

5. Assess the likelihood of failures that might occur. This could potentially be general
shear failure, local shear failure and punching shear failure. Refer to slides 21-23 in
PPP on shallow foundations on Moodle for more information).

6. Devise an alternative solution to mitigate such a scenario once you have completed
the calculation (you may consider increasing the area of the pad foundation, using a
combined pad or alternatively using raft/cellular raft foundation, or deep pile
foundation).

7. Justify your decision as to why you have chosen particular type of foundation and
write a brief summary and conclusion.

Words limit= 1000

Your attempt should be well-structured, coherent and follow a logical order. It should
be well-written and clearly articulated but above all to be concise and up to the point
aided by many visual sketches and diagrams to support your written text (these will
attract further marks). You should avoid repetition and circulars when you write down
your analysis and findings.

Read Part 2 Chapter 1 of Riley & Cotgrave "Construction Technology 2- Industrial and
Commercial Buildings" which you can access through Reading List Online on Moodle.

Task 2:

By the aid of visual diagrams and sketches, identify the main components used in both
concrete and steel portal frames for large-span, single-storey industrial buildings using
accurate construction terminology. Produce one Excel spreadsheet to compare and
contrast key advantages and limitations of using soft metal roof covering (lead,
synthetic rubber, and steel sheet) in portal Frame. The comparison should be based on
the following criteria:

I) The density of the roofing material.

ii) Resistance to mechanical stress, deflection and movement due to wind effect.

iii) Thickness of the materials.

iv) "Strength to Weight ratio",

v) Durability.

vi) Cost of purchase and cost of installation.

vii) Waterproofing of the roofing material.

viii) Ductility and ease of deforming the material.

ix) Ease of lifting.

1. Research and identify the main components used in both concrete and steel portal
frames for large-span, single-storey industrial buildings

2. Briefly describe and explain the main rationale and justifications of each system

3. Describe how the portal frame is built, how the loadings are transferred to the
ground, and what type of foundation can be used
4. Produce a cross-section for each system fully annotated and clearly showing various
components (foundation, vertical support of external cladding, and roofing elements)
using accurate construction terminology.

5. Produce one Excel spreadsheet to compare and contrast key advantages and
limitations of using soft metal roof / other materials covering (lead, rubber, steel)
in portal Frame

Following from your comparison, you should determine which roofing materials should
be used. You should also provide enough justifications as to why this is the case. (1000
words)

To complete the task, you need to read Chapter 8 "Portal Frames" Riley and Cotgrave
and "Materials for Architects and Builder" by Lynos, Chapter 5 (Ferrous and non-
ferrous materials.
