Concept Notes:

To divide decimals by 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, move the decimal point to the right according
the number of decimal places in the divisor.
EXAMPLE:
Place correctly the decimal point in the quotient.
3.765 ÷ 0.1 =
3.765 ÷ 0.01 =
3.765 ÷ 0.001 =
SOLUTION:
3.765 ÷ 0.1 = 37.65 The decimal point is between 7 and 6 because it is moved
one decimal place going to the right.
3.765 ÷ 0.01 = 376.5 The decimal point is between 6 and 5 because it is moved
two decimal places going to the right.
3.765 ÷ 0.001 = 3765 The decimal point is moved three decimal places going to
the right

Exercise/Practice/Drill
Put the decimal point in the quotient in its proper place. Encircle letter of the correct answer.
1. 4.873 ÷ 0.1 = A. 0.4873 B. 48.73 C. 487.3 D. 4873
2. 30.2659 ÷ 0.001 = A. 30.2659 B. 302.659 C. 3 0265.9 D. 302 659
3. 8.294 ÷ 0.01 = A. 829.4 B. 82.94 C. 8 294 D. 0.8294
MATHEMATICS 6
Week 8 Day 2

Objective To divide decimal up to 4 decimal places by 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001

Concept Notes:

To divide decimals by 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, move the decimal point in the dividend to
the right according the number of decimal places in the divisor.
EXAMPLE:

Solve for N.
a. 24.25 ÷ 0.1 = n
b. 531.4 ÷ 0.01 = n
c. 2.997 ÷ 0.001 = n
d. What is the quotient when 2.7165 is divided by one tenth?
e. What is the quotient when 31.5467 is divided by 0.01?

SOLUTION:
a. 24.25 ÷ 0.1 = 242.5 (Move one decimal place in the dividend because 0.1 has
one decimal place)
b. 531.40 ÷ 0.01 = 53140 (Move 2 decimal places in the dividend and add one zero
because the divisor is 0.01 and has 2 decimal places)
c. 2.997 ÷ 0.001 = 2997 (Move three decimal places in the dividend because 0.001
has three decimal place)
d. 2.7165 ÷ 0.1 = 27.165 (Move one decimal place in the dividend because 0.1 has
one decimal place)
e. 31.5467 ÷ 0.01 = 3154.67 (Move two decimal places in the dividend because 0.01
has two decimal places)

Exercise/Practice/Drill

Find the quotient.

1. 6.873 ÷ 0.01 =
2. 1.64 ÷ 0.1 =
3. 49.67 ÷ 0.001 =
MATHEMATICS 6
Week 8 Day 3

Objective To place the decimal point in the quotient correctly

Concept Notes:

To divide decimals by 10, 100, or 1000 we:

1. Move the decimal point in the dividend to the left as many places as the number of
zeros in the divisor.
2. Prefix zero/zeros before the decimal point if needed.
5.29 ÷ 10 = 0.529
5.29 ÷ 100 = 0.0529
5.29 ÷ 1 000 = 0.00529

EXAMPLE:
Divide the following.
a. 5497.6 ÷ 10 =
b. 5497.6 ÷ 100=
c. 5497.6 ÷ 1 000 =

SOLUTION:
a. 5497.6 ÷ 10 = 549.76 The decimal point is between 9 and 7 because it is moved
one decimal place going to the left
b. 5497.6 ÷ 100 = 54.976 The decimal point is between 4 and 9 because it is moved
two decimal places going to the left
c. 5497.6 ÷ 1000 = 5.4976 The decimal point is between 5 and 4 because it is moved
three decimal places going to the left.

Exercise/Practice/Drill

What divisor should be place in the box to get the answer on the right side. Choose from 10,
100 and 1000
1. 53.8 ÷ = 0.538
2. 197.2 ÷ = 1.972
3. 46.38 ÷ = 0.04638

Week 8 Day 4

Objective To divide decimals up to 2 decimal places by 10, 100, and 1 000 mentally

Concept Notes:

To divide decimals by 10, 100, or 1000 we:

1. Move the decimal point in the dividend to the left as many places as the number of
zeros in the divisor.
2. Prefix zero/zeros before the decimal point if needed.
EXAMPLE:
Divide.
a. 3.0745 ÷ 100 =
b. 34.6 ÷ 10 =
c. 58.92 ÷ 1000 =
d. 762.45 ÷ 100 =
SOLUTION:
a. 03.0745 ÷ 100 = 0.030745 Move the decimal point two decimal places to the
left and prefix one zero
b. 34.6 ÷ 10 = 3.46 Move the decimal point one decimal place to the left
c. 058.92 ÷ 1000 = 0.05892 Move the decimal point three decimal places to the
left and prefix one zero
d. 762.45 ÷ 100 = 7.6245 Move the decimal point two decimal places to the
left
