There are numerous advantages to reading more books, but my personal favourite is- an excellent book can help
you interpret your past experiences in fresh ways. It's as if the ‘software’ in your brain is updated whenever you
are exposed to a new mental model or idea. Suddenly, you can run all your old data via a new software. You can
learn new things from previous experiences. ‘Reading transforms the past,’ says Patrick O'Shaughnessy.

Of course, this is only true if you internalise and remember the lessons learned from the books you read. Only
by retaining knowledge will knowledge compound. In other words, getting more out of each book you read is
more important than merely reading more books. Of course, reading isn't just for the sake of gaining knowledge.
Reading for enjoyment or entertainment might be a great way to pass the time, but the purpose of this article is
to teach you something new. Therefore, most individuals should begin reading more books than they already
do. This does not imply that you must read each book from cover to cover.

Choosing books that you can immediately implement is one strategy to increase reading comprehension. One
of the finest ways to cement the concepts you read in your head is to put them into action. Practice is a fantastic
way to learn. Choosing a book that you can utilise also serves as a strong motivator for better attention and to
retain information. The table of contents, chapter headings and subheadings can all be skipped. Pick a part that
interests you and plunge into a few pages. Look over the book and look for any bolded points or tables. You'll
get a fair notion of how good it is in ten minutes.

Make a list of everything you read. This can be done in any way you like. It does not have to be like a large-
scale manufacturing or any complex system. Simply do something to draw attention to the key points and
passages. Depending on the medium I'm consuming, I do this in a variety of ways. When I'm reading on my
Kindle, I like to highlight key passages. As I listen to audiobooks, I scribble down fascinating quotes. There's no
reason to rely only on your recollection for reading comprehension. Evernote is where I keep all my notes. I
prefer Evernote to other choices since it is instantly searchable, convenient to use across numerous devices and
allows you to make and save notes even when you aren't online.

When you read something that reminds you of another issue or creates an immediate link or idea, allow that
thought to come and go without noticing. Write about what you've discovered so far and how it relates to other
concepts. I set a goal for myself to summarise a book in three phrases as soon as I complete it. Of course, this
constraint is merely a game, but it forces me to reflect on the book's true significance.

Even if it provides a lightning moment of understanding, a single book will rarely alter your life. The key is to
learn something new every day. It takes effort to read a book, but far too frequently, individuals base their
entire belief system on a single book or article. Reading a variety of books on the same topic is one way to
approach this problem. Examine the problem from various perspectives; look at it through the eyes of different
authors and try to go beyond your own personal experiences.

Thomas Thwaites chose to create a toaster from the ground up in 2010. He went into a store and bought the
cheapest toaster he could find, then went home and dismantled it piece by piece. Thwaites had believed that
the toaster would be a straightforward device. However, by the time he was finished with dismantling it, he had
more than 400 parts spread out on his floor. Over 100 different materials were used in the toaster, with plastic,
nickel, and steel being three of the most common.

The victory was fleeting. Thwaites recognized he'd need crude oil to build the plastic case for his toaster when
time came to make it. He called BP this time, asking if they could fly him out to an oil site and provide him some
oil for the project. They promptly turned down the request. Oil businesses didn't appear to be as generous as
iron companies that had obliged him without hesitation. Thwaites had to make do with fragments of plastic that
he melted into the shape of his toaster case. This wasn’t as simple as it appeared. The makeshift toaster
resembled a melted cake rather than a kitchen equipment.

This pattern persisted throughout The Toaster Project's run. It was practically hard to progress without the
assistance of a previous procedure. He had to resort to melting old coins to manufacture nickel components, for
example. "I realized that if you started from scratch, you could easily spend your life constructing a toaster," he
would later add.

We often assume that new ideas and significant changes necessitate a clean slate. We say things like, "Let's go
back to the drawing board," when business endeavours fail. "I just need a fresh start," is what we think when we
evaluate the habits we'd like to modify. Creative growth, on the other hand, is rarely the result of discarding all
past ideas and innovations in favour of a full reinvention of the world.
