The purpose of this module (LAS) is to understand the different parts and functions of computer
keyboard.

DESCRIPTION

This module(LAS) contains discussions and activities regarding the basics keyboarding techniques
and short-key commands of the keyboard.

OUTCOME

After completing this unit, you should be able to understand the main functions of the

“THE KEYBOARD and MOUSE”

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO KEYBOARD

The most commonly used input device is the


keyboard on which data is entered by manually keying in
or typing certain keys. A keyboard typically has 101 or
105 keys.
It is used for the entry of information, a wide object
that is equipped with buttons on which there are
letters and numbers:

1.3 PARTS OF KEYBOARD

Below are the different Parts of keyboard and you should be able to
familiarize and understand the different Parts and functions of keyboard.
Keyboard is belong to the (input devices) of computer It is an electronic
device that stores data(input), manipulate data (processes) and receives
useful output format(information) to carry out functions. Keyboard is useful
of inputting the data to the computer and you should be able to know the
different parts and functions of keyboard .

1. Function Key – is used by an application program or an operating system to provide


either a shortcut for a series of common instructions or a function that is not
otherwise available. It is also provides easy and fast access to some commands
depending on the software or application tool that you are using.
2. Numeric keys- can be used in two depending on whether the Num Lock Light is O0n
or Off as indicated in the Status Lights.

3. Navigation Keys – Consist of Keys to navigate direction of the document.


a. Up Narrow- Moves the Insertion Point up on one Line.
b. Down Arrow- Moves the Insertion Point down on one Line
c. Left Arrow- Moves the Insertion Point one character to the left.
d. Right Arrow- Moves the Insertion point one character to the right.

4. Additional Keys- Duplicate the function of the navigation keys like scrolling among
the pages of your document, like Insert or Delete.
5. Print Screen- Can be used to print the current display Screen.
6. Scroll Lock- Causes Line of Text to move when the cursor keys are used.
7. Main Keyboard- Consists of Common keys that are used to enter text and numbers
like in the typewriter
8. ESC- backs the user up one level in the menu structure or to exits the program that
you are currently working on.
9. Tab - allows you set tab stops just like in a typewriter.
10.Caps Lock – Allows you to type letter to type letters in uppercase excepts, of course,
numbers or symbol.
11.Shift- allows you to type letters in uppercase shown in some keys when pressed with
letters.

12.Ctrl or (Control Key)- may execute commands when pressed in combination with
some keys as specified in the software that you are using.
13.Alt or (Alternative key)- enables the user to request special functions and may also
initiate commands when pressed with other keys.
14.Del or (Delete Key)- is used to delete one character to the right of the insertion
point.
15.Backspace- is used to delete one character to the left of the insertion point.
16.Enter- Moves the cursor to the beginning of the next line or may also add line space
in between the lines of the text or paragraph.
17. Insert Key- Switchers between the insert mode and overtype mode. The insert
mode is the normal mode for word processing.
18.Home Key- is Used to move the cursor to the left or in the beginning of the current
line.
19.END- Moves the Cursor to the right end of the current line.
20.Page Up- Takes you to the top of the screen.
21.Page Down- Takes you to the bottom of the screen.

1.5 Keyboard Shortcuts

There are some Keyboard shortcuts that everyone can use so that it becomes easy to do
your desired tasks. The shortcuts are useful in performing basic tasks as well as complex
tasks. Also, these shortcuts are not easy to remember. That is why we have compiled a list
of useful shortcuts for you to go through.

1.5 Shortcuts Notations

A key name followed by a plus (+) an a letter, means to hold down


the key while pressing the letters, For Example, Alt +O means you
should hold down the Alt while pressing “O”.
