Quarter 1 – Module 1:
Use Information in Everyday Life
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the English 10 Alternative Delivery Module (ADM) Module
1 entitled Use Information in Everyday Life!
This module was critically and thoughtfully crafted based on the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) set by the Department of
Education for Grade 10 learners to support teachers and facilitators in
teaching the needed academic competencies and objectives in these trying
times.
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners and their parents
on how to use this module. This also follows that you need to keep an eye on
the learners’ progress by constantly giving them indirect feedbacks through
any means possible (text, call, chat, email, etc.) but still following the health
protocol. Adding to this, always remind the learners to use separate sheets of
paper or a labeled notebook in answering the varied activities presented in
this module. Furthermore, you are expected to assist and give positive
reinforcement to learners as they do the tasks at their own pace.

Let Us Learn!
Welcome to the first module in English 10! As your teacher, I hope you
are doing great staying at home safe and sound.
News reports, speeches, informative talks, panel discussions, forums
and webinars are very important in everyday life. These may come from
different sources like watching news channels be it local, national or
international; attending meetings or ceremonies; streaming entertainment
programs like Ellen of USA or Magandang Buhay here in the Philippines; or
engaging to seminars, workshops or trainings and the latest trend, webinars
via various digital applications like the Zoom app.
Although not all of these will suit a person’s taste or liking, choosing
what source of information interests you will help you grow as a person
holistically. All these bases of meaningful data have one common goal: to
inform and add knowledge to the readers, audience and listeners and explain
it as clear as possible to be able to use and apply new insights in day to day
living. Whatever information you get from what you are watching, reading and
listening or getting into, make sure to use it in your advantage.
get information that can be used in everyday life from news reports,
speeches, informative talks, panel discussions, etc. (EN10LC-Ia-11.1);
use textual aids in understanding the text better (EN10RC-Ia-2.15.2);
determine how connected events contribute to the totality of a material
viewed (EN10VC-Ia-1.4/2.4);
integrate the various information sources into your prior knowledge and
communicate with others effectively (EN10LC-Ia-11.1);
respond to questions that reflect current issues of our country and the
world (EN10VC-Id-25);
apply the various reading passages into your daily living (EN10LC-Ia-
11.1); and
write your own essay regarding certain topics that matter today
(EN10WC-Ic-12.2).
Now, if you are ready, try to answer the short set of questions that follow just
to assess your prior knowledge about the content of this module. OOOPS! Read
first the instructions.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque confirmed this in a text message to
INQUIRER.net on Friday.
The anti-terror bill seeks to strengthen the Human Security Act of 2007 and
criminalizes incitement of terrorism “by means of speeches, proclamations,
writings, emblems, banners or other representations.”
It also allows the detention of suspects for up to 24 days without charge and
empowers an anti-terrorism council to designate suspects or groups as
suspected terrorists who could be subjected to arrests and surveillance.
Duterte’s top military and security officials have cited the continuing threat
of terror groups in the country such as the Abu Sayyaf as the main reason for
the need for the law.
But lawyer groups, human rights advocates, and even some lawmakers have
opposed the bill which they feared could be used as a potential state weapon
against dissent.
This time do the activity on your own. If you have doubt, refer to the example

Red Cross swab-tests marooned passengers at Manila port
By: Christia Marie Ramos
July 03, 2020
“After seeing the current situation of our locally stranded individuals at the
Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) PMO-NCR North Port in Port Area in Manila,
we immediately instructed our staff to swab all of them for FREE to ensure
that they are safe from the virus,” PRC chairman Senator Richard Gordon
said in Facebook post.
“We also provided them with hygiene kits, conducted welfare activities and
installed tents as their temporary shelter,” Gordon added.
The LSIs, who are bound for Cebu, Bacolod, Butuan, Iloilo, Palawan, and
Dumaguete, are scheduled set to leave on July 12, the DOTr added.
Ten thousand six hundred seventy three patients have recovered, while 1,274

moved to Milwaukee to live with her mother, who was working as a
housecleaner.
An Imaginative Child. RareIy at home because of work demands,
Vernita had a difficult time providing for the emotional needs of the intelligent,
high-spirited Winfrey. Several sources have relayed the creative ways Winfrey
tried to get her mother's attention. Once, her mother refused to buy her a new
pair of eyeglasses—claiming that she couldn't afford them. Winfrey then
staged a fake burglary at her home. She said that she had been knocked
unconscious, and during the ordeal her glasses had broken. Another time,
she ran away from home. While on the streets, she approached Aretha
Franklin's limousine and convinced the singer that she was an abandoned
child. Franklin is said to have given her $100. Winfrey's last antic involved
her frantic attempt to keep a stray puppy. She created a tale about the brave
puppy fending off robbers. She even added a bit of realism to the "scene" by
tossing her mother's jewelry out of the window.
Molested as a Child. At the age of nine, and for several years thereafter,
Winfrey was sexually abused by a teenaged cousin and then by other male
relatives and friends. She spoke openly about this on her talk show in 1991.
At that time, she offered support and showed empathy to guests and viewers
who had gone through similar painful experiences. In an article for Essence
she admitted that she couldn't free herself of the "shame" she felt until 1990,
when she finally admitted, "I was not responsible for the abuse." The
molestation Winfrey experienced in Milwaukee ended when, at the age of 14,
she went to live with her father in Nashville.
"Saved" by Father. While under the care of her father, she flourished
and honed many of her communication skills. Winfrey credits her father, and
the time she spent with him and his wife Zelma, for "saving" her. He
functioned as a strict and constant presence in her life. She told Jill Nelson
in an interview for Washington Post Magazine, "If I hadn't been sent to my
father, I would have gone in another direction. I could have made a good
criminal. I would have used these same instincts differently." "Winfrey’s life
under her father's care was purposeful and disciplined.
Spectacular Success. In January 1984, Winfrey took over the ailing
television talk show AM Chicago. She instantly turned it into a smash hit. Her
earthy and down-home style won her large audiences. In September of 1986,
the Oprah Winfrey Show made its national debut. Within five months, it was
the third-highest-rated show on television, behind the game shows Wheel of
Fortune and Jeopardy! In addition, her show was ranked the number-one talk
show. At that time, her show reached between 9 and 10 million people in 192
cities on a daily basis. Since then, Winfrey and her show have received many
Daytime Emmy awards. Winfrey's talent and energy have brought her success
in other areas as well. For one thing, she is a successful publisher. In 2001,
Book magazine named her among the ten most powerful people in publishing.

In this time, cellular phone is a basic need to keep a person informed of the
current events happening around him/her. It is a convenient way to know the
updates and latest information that matter without the hassle of opening the
TV or turning on the radio. Take some time to read the short passage about
cellular phones.
Cellular Phones
For most people, cell phones are a welcome addition to a busy, on-the-go
lifestyle. Cell phones offer many benefits. Because of wireless phones, parents
are more likely to keep up with their teenage children. Drivers faced with
roadside emergencies can reach help. Some cell phones even allow access to
e-mail and the Internet. This access helps workers stay in touch with their
offices. However, cell phones also present some real problems. Dialing while
driving takes attention from the road, and in an instant, a car can drift off the
road or into oncoming traffic. Talking while driving presents the same risk.
Surprising or bad news can cause the driver to think about the conversation
13
instead of the traffic. Finally, some experts fear cell phones because cell
phones use radio frequency waves. Experts question the safety of constantly
putting radio frequency waves close to the head. Overall, cell phones do create
immediate contact, but they may also present some risks.
1. What is your prior knowledge about the benefits of cell phones?
2. What is your prior knowledge about the dangers of cell phones?
3. What is your reaction to the information about the safety of using cell
phones?
It is truly worth mentioning that the existence of smartphones really made our
lives convenient and happy. Isn’t it?

less than their wives. Husbands typically express a willingness to "help" their
wives with the housework, but even among two-earner couples, the commonly
held belief of both men and women is that housework is "women's work." This
is true no matter what other demands wives have on their time.
Interestingly, men are less tolerant of gender inequality in the
workplace than in their own homes. Consequently, employed wives end up
working what is called the "second shift." They are wage earners for part of
the day and then come home to still more, albeit unpaid, work.
In fact, if you ask full-time homemakers what kind of work they do, they
usually reply, "I don't work; I'm a housewife." This is a striking answer, for
housework, which is important and necessary work, is not considered real
work. Even the woman who is doing housework doesn't think of it as real
work. One reason housework is not considered real work is that it is
unspecialized, covering by some guesses more than eighty different tasks. It
is also never ending; in a sense, it is never fully finished. No sooner is a chore
completed than it must be done again. This is because housework produces
items and services for immediate consumption.
Another reason housework is not thought of as "real" work is that unlike
work in the paid labor force, there is no fixed work schedule for housework.
Homemakers rarely get time Off, not even holidays—who, for instance, cooks
those large holiday meals? Housework also differs from what we usually think
of as real work in that it is intertwined with love and feelings of care. It is also
privatized. We see people leaving their houses to go to work; we see them in
public on the job. But housework is done in isolation in the home, and much
of it is done when other family members are elsewhere.
And of course, one of the main reasons housework is not considered
real work is that it is unpaid. In a society such as ours, individuals’ status –
how much people are valued by others as well as by themselves – often is
measured by how much money they make.

Have you tried lying in order to save other people? Read the following text and
discover the different types of lies.
Lies, Lies, Lies
Even the best of us find ourselves telling a lie. In fact, most of us have
probably told at least one of three types of lies. One kind of lie we tell is the
19
"white lie." We tell the white lie because we don't have faith in the person to
whom we lie. We do not believe that the person can bear
to hear the truth, so we spare feelings by lying. For
example, when we tell a friend she looks good when she
does not, we tell a white lie. Another kind of lie we tell is
the "face-saving lie." The reason behind this lie is our
need to look good to others and ourselves; low self-
esteem leads us to think that others shouldn't know
about our failure or that our best is not good enough. In
reality, when we tell a lie to make ourselves look good,
we lie to ourselves, and we may begin to believe our own lies. Exaggerating
work experience on a résumé is one example of a face-saving lie. A third kind
of lie is the "do-no-harm lie." We tell this lie when the truth could cause
devastating harm. The need to tell this lie arises during those rare times when
the truth could cost a life or damage mental health. For example, during World
War Il, the lives of many Jews were saved by people who lied to the Nazis so
that the Jews could escape.
Processing Questions:
