Recycling: Creative Crafts with Plastic Bottles

Although plastics are recyclable, most of them end up in landfills and our environment. More than 8
million tons of plastic bottles end up in the sea each year; it is estimated that by the year 2050, there will
be more plastic than fish in the sea. In fact, there is so much plastic in the ocean that along the East zone
of the North Pacific, there is an island of plastic bottles that covers around 1.400.000 km2, almost three
times the surface of Spain and because this “Toxic Island” or the “Sixth Continent” is in international
waters, no one is taking responsibility and no government is being held accountable. But what can we
do to help alleviate this ecological problem?

General Question: What can we do to help lessen plastic pollution in the environment?
Specific Question: What are the different ways we can recycle a plastic bottle?

There are many ways to help the environment, namely the 5 R’s: Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, Refuse, and
Repurpose. We can reuse the bottle at add more water, we can stop purchasing plastic bottles, or we
can even buy in bulk. But today, we will focus on the recycling. Plastic takes nearly 1000 years to
decompose and emits a toxic substance when you burn it, recycling extends its purpose of being just a
bottle. You can make many DIY crafts with a plastic bottle: a sprinkler, a dispenser, a funnel, and many
more. All you have to do is to get creative, plan, design, and make your prototype.

But how does this help the environment? It helps because we are not throwing it away carelessly and
littering. Recycling also benefits us because we gain another item and have fun doing it.

S – What is the problem that you would like to solve in your proposed topic?
We would like to solve the problem of plastic pollution by recycling plastic bottles in fun and creative
ways.
M – Which part of your proposed topic can be measured (quantified)? Define what
evidence will prove you're making progress.
A part of this topic that can be quantified is how much bottles you’ve recycled. You can even turn this in
to a game between friends and family. Evidence that this way of helping the environment is working can
be seen by keeping track of the amount of plastic bottles ending up in your trash can.
A – Is your proposed topic achievable in terms of the materials needed and methods?
This topic is achievable in terms of the materials needed and method required because the items we use
aren’t difficult to obtain and the methods we can use are safe.
R – What is the importance/benefit of your proposed topic?
The goal of this prototype is to help lessen the plastic bottles we simply throw out. The benefits that can
be gained are cleaner environments, gradual change in the environment surrounding us, and practice of
designing and creativity.
T- Can your proposed topic be done within 2-3 months?
Yes, our proposed topic can be achieved in 2-3 months.
