A quick survey …..
What is Journalism?
The Elements of Journalism
1) The purpose of journalism is to provide people with the
information they need to be free and self-governing.
2) Journalism's first obligation is to the truth.
3) Its first loyalty is to citizens.
4) Its essence is a discipline of verification.
5) Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they
cover.
6) It must serve as an independent monitor of power.
7) It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.
8) It must strive to make the significant interesting and relevant.
9) It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional.
10) Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal
conscience.

➢iReporter “johntw”:
Steve Jobs was rushed to the ER just a few hours ago after suffering a
major heart attack. I have an insider who tells me that paramedics were
called after Steve claimed to be suffering from severe chest pains and
shortness of breath. My source has opted to remain anonymous, but he is
quite reliable. I haven't seen anything about this anywhere else yet, and as
of right now, I have no further information, so I thought this would be a
good place to start. If anyone else has more information, please share it.

Week 3 In-class Activity: Digital Journalism
• Your team is now appointed by the Board of Directors of the Central
Times to prepare a proposal on how to save the company.
Central Times (CT) is an international print media company and its core
business is paid newspaper publishing. CT’s news website is paid subscription
based. CT’s investigative journalism department is globally well known.
In the past 3 years, CT’s circulation and the advertising income drastically fell.
Based on market research, CT lost many readers, especially the younger
generation, who switch to free news sources or prefer reading news via smart
phone or social networking sites.

• You have 30 minutes to prepare a 5 bullet points proposal.

• Your proposal is expected to include:
• Identify main possible problem(s)
• Suggest feasible solution(s)
• Explain why your plan can increase CT’s circulation and income
