Properties of Addition

This lesson plan is for a math class on the concept and properties of addition for 1st graders. Over 4 days, students will explore the commutative, associative, and identity properties of addition through concrete materials and pictorial representations. They will practice mentally adding 2-3 digit numbers using appropriate strategies. On the third day, students will work in groups to identify addition properties in illustrations and write addition sentences. On the fourth day, students will complete a performance task to demonstrate their understanding and apply addition to budgeting a family's weekly meals. Their work will be assessed using a 10-point rubric.
