Complex Variable Midterm Summer 2023

1) The document is the midterm exam for Complex Variable (Math 187) from United International University. It contains 6 questions testing various concepts in complex analysis, including expressing complex numbers in different forms, sketching sets and mappings in the complex plane, and determining limits and derivatives of complex functions. 2) Question 5 asks the student to determine the limit of a function f(z) as z approaches 0 by calculating partial derivatives at points on the real, imaginary, and y=x lines and concluding the limit does not exist. 3) Question 6 asks the student to use the Cauchy-Riemann equations to show the derivative of the function f(z)=e^

Midterm Exam, Complex Variable (Math 187)
Marks: 30, Time: 1 hour 45 minutes, Summer 2023

Solve all questions.

1
1. (a) Express all values of the expression (1 − i) 3 in both polar and Cartesian coor- [7]
dinates, and plot them.

(b) i. Find the complex number z such that Re( 2+i ) = 5 ∧ |z − 2| = |2i − z̄|
ii. Express this complex number in exponential form and plot it in the z−plane
using the principal argument.
Re(z)
(c) Sketch Im(z) = 1 such that |z| ≤ 1
2. Describe and draw the sets of points in the plane R2 such that: [4]

1. Imz > Rez + 1 3. |z| = Imz + 1

2. |z|2 = 2Imz + 3 4. 2(Rez)2 + (Imz)2 ≤ 4

3. (a) For the mapping w = z 2 sketch the image of the line x = −2 in the uv−plane. [6]
1
(b) For the mapping w = z
sketch the image of the line y = x−2 in the uv−plane.

4. Consider the function f (z) = ( z̄z )2. [5]

(a) Show that f (z) = 1 along the real axis.
(b) Show that f (z) = 1 along the imaginary axis.
(c) Show that f (z) = −1 along the line y = x.
(d) Thus deduce that the limit of f (z) does not exit as z tends to 0.

5. Let f denote the function whose values are [6]

∆w
(a) Determine ∆z
at each nonzero point on the real and imaginary axes in the ∆z
or ∆x∆y plane.
∆w
(b) Determine ∆z
at each nonzero point (∆x, ∆x) on the line ∆y = ∆x in that
plane (Figure 1).
(c) Conclude from these observations that f ′ (0) does not exist.

6. Consider the function f (z) = ex eiy . [2]

(a) Show that f ′ (z) exits for all z (use the Cauchy-Riemann equations).
(b) Hence find f ′ (z).
