“We are a River”

By Lao Tzu

Our life has not been an ascent up one

side of a mountain and down the other.
We did not reach a peak,
Only to decline and die.
We have been as drops of water,
Born in the ocean and sprinkled on the
earth in a gentle rain.
We became a spring,
and then a stream, and
finally, a river flowing deeper and
stronger,
nourishing all it touches
as it nears its home once again.

Don’t accept he modern myths of aging,

You are not declining.
You are not fading away into uselessness.
You are sage,
a river at its deepest
and most nourishing.
Sit by a river bank some time
and watch attentively as the river Students are listening.
tells you of your life.
The students are listening.
Now your turn to read class.

in life instead of trying to control that
something that will never work.

softness. Softness symbolizes Daoist
virtue. Water is maybe soft but it

What about the structure of the

underlined words? Suffix and prefix ma’am.

That’s right!

Yes, please Karen?

I think Ma’am, that it would still be

complicated because it can cause problems
on understanding the whole thought of the
sentence.

Very good!
Now, what do you think will happen
to the poem if all the affixes will be
removed from its root word class? Live like a water, which is soft but
overcomes hardships.

Exactly! So why we should use the

affixes? How about we use the root
words directly to convey the poem?

Be flexible in ways you can. And don’t
