Subject: Revised electronic control unit (ECU) for 1988–90 Supra (MA7) and
Cressida (MX8)
Symptom: Hard starting, long cranking time when lukewarm, cold driveability problems
Source: Toyota service bulletin Volume 10, Engine 024 (August 1990)
If the hard starting problem on a 1989 Supra or Cressida is accompanied by a cold driveability
complaint, first replace the cold-start injector time switch as described in Reference TA008. A
revised ECU also is available to correct the combined problem. The correct cold-start switch
for 1989 models has “45” stamped on it to indicate a 45°C operating temperature
(Figure TA009-1).
If the hard starting problem on a 1990 Supra or Cressida is accompanied by a cold driveability
complaint, do not replace the cold-start injector time switch. The original cold-start switch
must be retained if a revised ECU is installed to correct the combined problem. If the switch
was changed previously, the original type must be reinstalled. The correct cold-start switch for
1989 models has “22” stamped on it to indicate a 22°C operating temperature
(Figure TA009-2).

This revised ECU was installed as a production change, as listed below:

Because the revised ECU contains updated control logic for the cold-start time switch, it must
be used only with the original switch marked with a “22” as described above.
Use the revised ECU on a 1990 Supra or Cressida to correct a hard starting or cold
driveability complaint, or both problems. Do not replace the cold-start injector time switch on
these models.
Before replacing the ECU, make sure that all engine mechanical, fuel, and electrical and
electronic systems perform within specifications. Check the number stamped on one side of
the cold-start injector switch hexhead as explained above. Refer to the table above to make
sure the revised ECU was not a factory-installed component on the vehicle. If the vehicle
already has the revised ECU, the solution to the problem lies elsewhere.
The correct part number of the revised ECU is listed in the table below:

Verify that the replacement part numbers have not been superseded before ordering an ECU.
The replacement ECU is a remanufactured unit, and a usable core is required for credit. Do
not remove the cover screws or otherwise tamper with the ECU core. Cores that are wet or
dirty will be rejected
