PANTHENON

INTRODUCTION: The piece of art that I'm going

to talk about is a Greek architecture piece
called the Parthenon, which is a temple located
in the Acropolis, and was constructed for the
goddess Athenas. This piece of architecture was
builded in the V. century B.C., belonging to the
classical period. Iktinos and Kalikatres were the
architects, while Phidias was in charge of the
sculptures located in the temple, and the
building's main material is white marble. athens

DESCRIPTION: The temple is in a peripteral shape and is an

octastyle, with eight columns in the front and back, and
seventeen columns on both sides. The substantive elements
are doric order columns, characterized by the lack of base and
simple capital. On the inside we can find the pronaos at the
front and the naos at the inside, and the opisthodomos.

COMMENTARY:
The parthenon embodies principles of symmetry, balance, and
proportions, using optical distortions for the visually perfect
building idea. Sculpture shrine made by Fidias of the Atheneas
goddess at a colossal scale, supposedly made of ivory and gold.
It's important to mention the reliefs of the freeze, alternated
with the metopes of the entablature, representing
mythological scenes. Originally the parthenon would have
featured colorful decorative elements, though they have faded
or been lost.

With the ending of the wars in 480 B.C. Athens city started a splendor era, in
aspects such as economics, politics and culture. In 450 B.C. Pericles started ruling,
that's when he ordered the construction of the Acropolis of Athens, meaning
wealth, power and cultural achievements. The Parthenon was the most
representative monument of the acropolis, only meant for the goddess Athenas,
not for the people.

rediscovery of ancient Greek and Roman art sparked a revival of classical
aesthetics, Neoclassicism, which emerged in the 18th century, drew direct
inspiration from ancient Greece and Rome, and Even into the modern era, echoes
of the Parthenon can be found in various architectural styles
