Tensile Structure

Alternative construction systems include tensile structures, pre-engineered structures, wood framing, steel framing, space frames, precast concrete, earthen architecture, and bamboo construction. Tensile structures carry only tension and no compression or bending, making them suitable for roofs that can span large distances economically. There are two main types of tensile fabric: structural coated fabric which has a woven cloth core with coated outer sides, and mesh fabric which is open and used for shading. Tensile structures have advantages like being lightweight, durable, allowing large spans and translucent shelter, but require expensive foundations to manage their compression and tension loads.

Alternative construction systems and details

refers to construction methods that differ from ordinary like

 Tensile structures
 Pre-Engineered Structures
 Wood Framed construction
 Steel frame structures
 Space frames
 Precast concrete construction
 Earthen architecture
 Bamboo construction

Tensile structure/Tensile Architecture

 carrying only tension and no compression or bending. used as roofs as they can
economically and attractively span large distances
 it may also be used as complete buildings, with a few common applications

 The start using of Tensile Fabrics was practiced since thousands of years.

 in 1960th the German Architect Frei Otto practiced well about the technique of enclosure
Fabrics as the main Stream of architecture .

 1957 Frei Otto establishes Center for Lightweight Construction

Types of tensile structures

1. Structural coated fabric

2. Mesh fabric

1.STRUCTURAL COATED FABRIC

 Central base of woven cloth with both outer sides having technical coating

 It’s water proof and well approves required technical characteristics like :

 UV resistance

 Flame resistance

2. MESH FABRIC

 Due to the openness of its meshes

 Mostly used for shading and
 Light diffusing fabrics
EXTERNAL USE FABRICS
 PVC coated polyester
 PTFE coated glass cloth/consists of a woven fiberglass and are coated with a PTFE/ a
thermoplastic polymer/ resin
 Silicon coated glass cloth

Required performances of modern tensile fabrics are :

 Advanced strength
 Aesthetics
 Easily cleaning
 Possibility of solar shading
 Acoustics
 Printability

Forms

-Synclastic: Curved toward the same side in same directions.

-Anticlastic: Curved in opposite ways/in two directions

General principles of tensile structures

 highly flexible elements with negligible bending stiffness, such as chains, cables,
ropes, yarns and woven fabrics, can be used effectively in the most efficient
structures, those stressed in pure tension.

Joining methods
 Membrane materials have to be joined to form the roof. There are several
techniques available, including: stitched ,glued, laced, clamped or welded.

boundary detailing
 Curved or scalloped edge

 Straight edge
 Fabric edge

 Clamp

Cone peak details

The external towers adopt shuttle-shaped columns, which consist of three main chords made of steel tubes
connected by diaphragm plates

 Gathering Plate and bale ring

Advantages of Tensile Structures

• Shelter from (sun, rain, wind)
• Translucency
• Light weight & Durable
• Endless form possibilities
• Quicker installation
• Large spans
• Recyclability and Eco friendliness
• Adaptability to exciting building technologies (steel, glass, cement, stone)
• Simplicity of maintenance & Easy repair or replacement
Disadvantage of tensile structure
Before receiving external loads, they transmit strong compression and tension to the foundation,
which requires expensive buried infrastructure
