Listening for attitude


Often, we have to decide what a speaker is feeling or thinking. This is especially
important in discussions, where many people might have different opinions about
a topic.

4 Work in pairs. Do you agree with the statement below? Give reasons for

PRONUNCIATION FOR LISTENING


Speakers often use a wider pitch range when they want to express an attitude, or
when they feel more emotional about something. Sometimes, intonation can be
more important than the words we use.

EXPLANATION

Referring to common knowledge


‘Common knowledge’ means ideas that most people will probably agree with. We
often refer to common knowledge to make our argument stronger and we can
use phrases like,
Everyone knows that …, There is no doubt that …, There is no question
that …, etc.
However, sometimes speakers use these phrases with ideas that may not be
completely true, or may not be shared by everyone.
