Course summary

Who is this programme aimed at?


This degree is for dentists wishing to train as specialists in Orthodontics.
The DClinDent in Orthodontics is a three-year, full-time programme which enables you to develop,
consolidate and enhance your range of academic and clinical competencies.
The programme will enable independent and reflective practice at the standard of a specialist in
orthodontics.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the DClinDent, you will be able to demonstrate the following: diagnose anomalies of
the dentition; detect deviations in the development of the dentition, of facial growth and the possession
of functional abnormalities; evaluate the need for orthodontic treatment; formulate a treatment plan and
predict its course; carry out interceptive orthodontic measures.

overseas); working as a speciality dentist, specialist or consultant in secondary care.; programme
directors; lecturers; other roles within dental school infrastructure.

DESIGN 1: Critical Appraisal of Scientific Literature (DENT12053)(20 Credits)


The aim of this course is to develop and demonstrate critical appraise skills and present this
information using concise academic writing.

DESIGN 2: Scotland-Wide Orthodontic Programme (SWOP) 1 (ORTH11001)(60 Credits)


This course will cover the basics of orthodontic problems, the aetiology of malocclusion, clinical
assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning.

DESIGN 3: Diagnosis and treatment planning (ORTH12002)(40 Credits)


This course will train the student how to describe an orthodontic problem accurately from the
clinical examination and records; how to formulate a problem list; to describe the aims of
treatment; and to make a treatment plan (and alternative plans). This module will teach the student
(a) how to analyse and asses a clinical problem in orthodontics (b) formulate a problem list (c)
outline the aims of treatment and (d) devise a course of treatment that will achieve the desired
result. Consideration of the patient's clinical, psychological and medical needs in relation to such
treatment will be paramount.

DESIGN 4: CMVM Scientific Academic Writing (TPGR11004)

DESIGN 5: Orthodontics - Clinical Patient Care 1 (ORTH12001)(60 Credits)


The clinical practice section requires students to spend 20 hours per week treating personal
patients under supervision and attending new patient and joint clinics.

DESIGN 6: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning 2 (ORTH12005)(10 Credits)


This course builds on the skills and attributes gained in the first year and augments the knowledge
and motor skills for diagnosis and treatment planning.

DESIGN 7: Scotland-Wide Orthodontic Programme (SWOP) 2 (ORTH12004)(40 Credits)


This course will cover more advanced topics in orthodontic specialist training, building on year 1 of
the SWOP programme and will include: Iatrogenic effects of orthodontics.Interceptive
Orthodontics; Removable Appliances; Orthognathic surgery.

DESIGN 8: Orthodontics - Clinical Patient Care 2 (ORTH12003)(60 Credits)


The clinical practice section requires students to spend approximately 20 hours per week treating
personal patients under supervision and attending new patient and joint clinics. This section will
build on the experience gained from the first year module (Clinical Patient Care 1).

DESIGN 9: Contemporary Standard Edgewise course (ORTH11002)(10 Credits)


This course is designed to instruct students in standard edgewise technique which forms the basis
of all contemporary orthodontic treatment, and to apply these principles to contemporary pre-
adjusted edgewise technique.

DESIGN 10: Dissertation (DENT11178)(60 Credits)


This course aims to develop skills and knowledge in an area of research relevant to the DClinDent
discipline. The student will learn how to conduct research under the supervision of a senior
member of the unit. They will develop a research protocol, undertake a literature review, conduct
the research and then present the dissertation in the form of a short scientific paper suitable for
publication in a dental journal along with the completed literature review.

Entry requirements

A primary dental qualification (such as a Bachelor of Dental Surgery), or its international


equivalent, plus a minimum of two years' post-qualification experience.
