The Kabah
Cubical room built of stone in the middle of Masjid al-Haram, and is 11.4 meters tall. Its north wall is 9.25 meters long, south wall 8.5 meters long, east wall 13.5 meters long, and west wall 13.3 meters long. On the corner of the east- south walls is the stone of Hajar-e-aswad, which is over one meter above the ground. The Kabah has a door on the east wall. 1.88 meters above the ground, the door is 1.7 meters wide and 2.6 meters high. The outer side of the Kabah is dressed with black silk tissue.

The Ihram
The literal meaning of Ihram is to make haram (forbidden). Wear before crossing the Meeqat Geographical boundaries. When a pilgrim pronounces the Niyyah (intention) of Hajj and Umrah and utters the Talbiyah, certain halal (permissible) things become haram for him.
Clipping nails, cutting or pull out hair or combing the hair. To use perfume or anything which contains fragrance. Hunting. Quarelling or using obscene tongue. To have sexual relations. The male must not wear sewn garments, even underwear, gloves or socks. It is permissible to use an umbrella to get shade and have a bath to cool oneself.

This combined action (Niyyah and Talbiyah) is called Ihram. The two sheets that a haji wears are figuratively known as Ihram but the real Ihram is Niyyah & Talbiyah.
Sandles which leaves top of feet bare. Head uncovered for men Women wear their normal clothes, the hands, feet and face should remain uncovered.

If someone wears these two sheets and does not declare his intention and utter Talbiyah, he does not become a Muhrim. That is why, before Niyyah and Talbiyah, he can cover his head during two rakahs of Nafl, an act which is not allowed in the real state of Ihram. Talbiyah
TALBIYAH Here I am at Your service O here I am. Here I am at Your service , and You have no partner, to You alone is All Praise and All Bounty, to You alone is The Sovereignty. NIYYAH FOR HAJJ O , I intend to perform Hajj. Make it easy for me and accept it from me. I make the intention for Hajj and enter the state of Ihram for the sake of alone, the Most High.

NIYYAH FOR UMRAH

O , I intend to perform Umrah. Make it easy for me and accept it from me. I make the intention for Umrah and enter the state of Ihram for the sake of alone, the Most High.

Performing the Tawaf


NIYYAH FOR TAWAF

O , I intend to perform Tawaf of Your Sacred House. Make it easy for me and accept from me the seven circuits for the sake of , the Most High.

Tawaf al-ziyarah: Revisiting of Kabah and circambulating it. This can be performed anytime after the 10th of Dhul-Hajjah.

Rites of Tawaf
Wajibat (necessary) rights:
To begin the Tawaf from the black stone such that the Kabah is on the left hand side. To cover the private parts. Not to enter the Hatim since it is part of the Kabah. This is a horse shoe shaped wall by the Kabah. Tawaf consists of seven circuits beginning each time at the black stone. To walk during the Tawaf. Disabled can use a wheel chair or stretches. To pray two units after the seven circuits have been completed. Preferably behind the Maqaam-e-Ibrahim.

Sunnah of Tawaf:
To wear the upper part of the Ihram such that it covers the left shoulder only and passes under the right armpit. To march briskly in the first three circuits only. This entails taking small strides and moving the shoulders as well. To be in a state of wudu. To kiss the black stone at the end of each circuit. If this is not possible due to the crowding then raising both hands towards it is sufficient.

Performing the Saie


(In the name of , and All Praise is to , and there is no God but , and is Greater) INTENTION FOR DOING THE SAIE

O , I intend to perform Saie of seven trips between Safa and Marwa for You Pleasure alone. Make it easy for me and accept it from me.

Saie
This rite is necessary for the completion of Hajj, it commemorates the anxious running of Hajarah in search of water. Saie is performed only once during Hajj, either after Tawaf of Arrival (Qudum) or Tawaf of Visit (Ziyarah). But it is better to perform Saie after Tawaf of Visit. It must be done after the Tawaf. Sunnahs of Saie:
To be in a state of wudu. To climb Safa and facing Kaba raise the hands for prayer. To march briskly between the two green pillars/lights. To glorify, say supplications and praises of and send blessing on the Messenger To kiss the black stone before leaving for Safa.

Necessary (Wajib) rights of Saie:


Saie has seven trips and all are obligatory (wajib). To start Saie from the hill of Safa and end at Marwa. To perform Saie on foot unless somebody has an excuse when it can be performed by riding. For Umrah and after Tawaf of Arrival (Qudum), it is obligatory to be in the state of Ihram, but Sunnah to perform the Saie after Tawaf of Visit (Ziyarah) in ordinary clothes.

Rules Of Hajj at a Glance


There are three ways of performing the Hajj:
Hajj al-Tamatt'u (Interrupted) - Easiest way of performing Hajj as well describe here. Hajj al-Qiran (Combined) - Entering into Ihram for both Umrah and Hajj at the same time, not taking it off until the day of sacrifice at Mina. One has to stick to the long-lasting restrictions of Ihram. Hajj al-Ifrad (Single) - Entering into ihram only for the Hajj and taking it off only on the day of sacrifice.

The 5 days of Hajj


Day One: 8th Dhul-Hajjah. After the Maghrib of 7th Dhul-Hajjah, people start leaving Makka for Mina. The stay in Mina is on 8th DhulHajjah. Day Two: 9th Dhul-Hajjah. After sunrise, pilgrims go to Arafat. They pray Dhuhr and Asr combined and remain at Arafat till sunset. Then after sunset they make their way back to Mina via Muzdalifah, here they pray Maghrib and Isha together. Day Three: 10th of Dhul-Hajjah. After praying Fajr at Muzdalifah the Hajis return to Mina. Four important rites of Hajj are carried; stoning the shaitan, sacrifice of animal; trimming hair or shaving the head and revisiting the Kaba. Day Four: 11th of Dhul-Hajjah. The shaitan are pelted and night is spent at Mina. The time for stoning is after midday till sunset. Day Five: 12th of Dhul-Hajjah. The shaitan are pelted and the Hajjis can now return to Makka.

Rights of Hajj
Obligatory Rights of Hajj:
To wear the Ihram. Staying at Arafat on the 9th of Dhul-Hajjah from midday till sunset. Tawafal Ziyarah. This is the revisiting of Kaba and performing the tawaf. This can be performed anytime after the 10th of Dhul-Hajjah.

Necessary (Wajib) Rights of Hajj:


Saie. To stay in Muzdalifah even for a short moment. Stoning of Jamarah. Trimming locks or shaving head. To do the farewell Tawaf.

Sunnahs of staying at Arafah:


To have a bath. For the Imam to deliver two sermons. To combine the Dhuhr and Asr prayers. Not to be fasting. To be in a state of wudu. To concentrate on supplication. To stay near the black rocks where the Messenger stood, if that is not possible then as close as possible. To raise and spread open the hands whilst supplicating.

Travellers Tips
Take 2 sets of Ihram with you. Carry a reasonable supply of medical equipment such as Aspirin, Cough Sweets, Multi Vitamins, Band-aids, Vaseline. Waist Pouch for valuables. Strong Suitcase. Madinah can get cold, so a sweater or jacket would be useful. Book of Duas, small Quran. Pen/notepad, etc. Photocopys of passport. Remember Hajj is not a holiday- its a spiritual journey, so make the most of every second.

The Jamarat in Mina

Construction of the new four-level Jamarat Bridge began on 16 Jan 2006 in Mina. The new bridge will accommodate more than three million pilgrims at a time, relieving congestion and avoiding stampedes. The project provides for separate access and departure routes.
