OmniSX - MX2 - Training - 14I - Phased Array Analysis - Reference Files

This document provides descriptions of reference data files used in training for the OmniScan SX/MX2 phased array system. It lists several data files that demonstrate features like the difference between high and low resolution apertures, calibration of sizing and wedge parameters, beam profiles, and inspection of flaws and corrosion. The files can be opened in OmniPC to reproduce the examples shown in training slides.

Phased Array Analysis – Reference Files

V4.3R2
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – Training Files Overview
 This section provides an image and brief description of each data file that was
referenced in the analysis training slides.
 The file descriptions for the flaw data files can be found in the flaw characterization
section.
 The same sizing and demonstration of features can be reproduced using the same
data file in OmniPC for all the examples in the analysis section slides.
 For each file review the focal law, UT, and scan setup prior to repeating the exercise
of the slide.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_32ELvs16EL_HighRes.Opd
 TF_32ELvs16EL_HighRes.Opd uses two groups to demonstrate the difference
between 16 element and 32 element apertures and the benefit of high angle
resolution and focus for precision sizing.
 The file is a single data point optimized on a 1mm wide by 10mm deep ID notch.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_Cal_25mm_SizingCal.Opd
 TF_Cal_25mm_SizingCal_4.1 is an optimized clock scan of the below calibration
block for verification of depth and height sizing accuracy.
 1mm wide machined notches depths of 20mm, 15mm, 10mm, and 5mm.
 The data file validates the sizing technique and calibration at all angles for all
notches within +/- .20mm in depth and +/- .10mm in width.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_Cal_AcousticWedgeVerify.Opd
 TF_Cal_AcousticWedgeVerify.Opd is used to demonstrate the procedure for
acoustic verification and troubleshooting of wedge parameters.
 A contact linear 0 group is configured with no wedge using a 1 element aperture.
 The velocity of rexolite is used for the component. This allows the wedge
parameters to be measured and calculated for improved precision and used in the
PA calculator.
 Inspect the wedge setup and acquisition.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_Cal_A2_BeamProfile.Opd
 TF_Cal_A2_BeamProfile.Opd is used to demonstrate an optimum beam profile on a
15mm deep 1.5mm SDH with symmetrical echo dynamic and precision calculated
wedge delay and velocity.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_Cal_Bad_WD.Opd
 TF_Cal_Bad_WD.Opd is used to demonstrate the appearance and symptoms of a
bad or improperly performed wedge delay calibration using the OmniScan wizard.
 Notice the flat distorted shape of the SDH in the S-scan compared to the previous
slide. This is exactly what a bad wedge delay calculation looks like.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_Cal_IIW_WD_Verify50-100mm.Opd
 TF_Cal_IIW_WD_Verify50-100mm.Opd is used to demonstrate a clock scan on an
IIW block for validation of wedge delay and block velocity using true depth display
and gates.
 Gates are set for 50mm and 100mm radius to generate clock C-scan for validation.
 Acquisition in sound path mode available in MXU V3.2 only.
 Analysis available in MXU V3.2+ including V4.1.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_Cal_TCG Verification.Opd
 TF_Cal_TCG Verification.Opd is an automated inspection of a NAVships calibration
block with a 4 point TCG for all focal laws in the 45-70 degree S-scan.
 This file is used for amplitude analysis and TCG calibration demonstration.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_Cal_TCG_Off.Opd

 An automated inspection of the

same NAVships calibration
block in an uncalibrated state
with no TCG.
 This file is used for amplitude
analysis and comparison
between two acquisitions of the
same configuration with and
without TCG calibration.
 What is the rate the 60 degree
A-scan deteriorates in carbon
steel in dB\usec or dB\mm?
 The database of TCG values in
the data file for each point
makes answering that question
possible.
OmniScan SX\MX2 Training – TF_Corrosion.Opd
 TF_Corrosion.Opd is used to demonstrate the features and analysis associated with
zero degree linear scans typical of corrosion mapping and composite inspection.
 Pictured below is a 1mm FBH in the center of a corrosion sample.
