what is Research?
✔ Research means finding answers to the
questions.
✔ It is a systematic search for truth.
✔ Through research, new and original information,
ideas about the world we live in, are obtained.
✔ Research is search for knowledge.
✔ Research is defined as a scientific and
systematic search for information on a specific
topic.
These are the steps:
1. Understanding the nature of problem
to be studied and identifying the related
area of knowledge.

2. Reviewing literature to understand

how others have approached or dealt with
the problem.
These are the steps:
3. Collecting data in an organized and
controlled manner so as to arrive at
valid decisions.
4. Analyzing data appropriate to the
problem.
5. Drawing conclusions and making
generalizations
Characteristics of
Research
CHARACTERISTICS
OF RESEARCH:
1. The research should be systematic.
There is a macro and micro system that is
being followed in research writing.

2. The research should be objective.

Results must never be based from biases and
subjective opinions must not be used in
analyzing data.

3. The research should be feasible.

Problems to be studied must be convenient and
attainable in the chosen setting.
CHARACTERISTICS
OF RESEARCH:
4. The research should be empirical.
There should be supporting pieces of evidences
and details for every variables used in the
study. References and citations must be
included.

5. The research should be clear.

The variables being studied should be explained
by the researcher in a direct and concise
manner.
Consider the following case as an
example of research.
1. A general manager of a car producing company was concerned with the complaints received from the
car users that the car they produce have some problems with sound at the dash board and the rear
passenger seat after few thousand kilometers of driving.
2. He obtained information from the company workers to identify the various factors influencing the
problem.
3. He then formulated the problem and generated guesses (hypotheses).
4. He constructed a checklist and obtained requisite information from a representative sample of cars.
5. He analyzed the collected data, interpreted the results in the light of his hypotheses and reached
conclusions.
Meet Albert, the Researcher.

Roles of a Researcher
He is a:
☑ Principal Investigator
☑ Member of a research team
☑ Identifier of research problems
☑ User of research findings
☑ Client advocate
☑ Subject, participant or respondent
IMPORTANCE
OF RESEARCH
✔ Research provides a scientific basis for any practice or
methodology in any field or discipline.
Example: A new drug must first be tested to determine its
efficacy in curing sickness before it can actually be
prescribed.
✔ Research is undertaken for continuous development and
further productivity in any field.
Example: The advancement of technology in the field of
education.
✔ Research helps develop tools for assessing
effectiveness of any practice and operations.
Example: Use of pyschological tests, intelligence quotient
tests and pychological assessments
✔ Research provides solutions to problems concerning
almost all issues encountered in different areas of work.
Example: Tardiness of employees are being investigated
and given solution so that the problem can be resolved.
✔ Research impacts decision making.
Example: For a teacher to changer his/her teaching methodology
for the first period class, he/she must conduct a study
considering the time, academic standing of students and other
factors.
✔ Research develops and evaluates alternative approaches to
educational aspects of any discipline.
Example: Research can be used to determine whether a lecturer
is a better method that experiment in teaching science.
✔ Research aims to advance the personal and professional
qualifications of a practitioner.
