CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Microsoft Office is really helpful as it makes work easier and faster. The

students can use Microsoft Office in their studies. Since most of the students are the

people ware commonly using of Microsoft Office researchers surveyed the knowledge

level in using Microsoft Office applications to Students of Tiblac National High

School. Moffat, S. (2011) cited that the most significant round for the student to bear

with technological proficiency is hands-on training in basic computer abilities, and

one of these is using a word processing application such as Microsoft Word by using

a computer or a mobile phone. Microsoft Word is a robust word-processing program

that enables users to create written documents. Simple letters to fax cover sheets,

reference manuals, and complicated reports with numbered headings, figures, and

graphics are examples.

According to Oledejo and Atedunte, 2009, basic computer literacy makes up a

relatively minor portion of the external assessment in integrated science, students who

graduate from senior high school are consequently not fully evaluated on it. With

integrated science, even a student with no prior computer experience can achieve

excellent grades. Examining a student's degree of computer knowledge before they

graduate from senior high school is necessary given the significance of computers in

today's environment. Also, according to Indrinal, 2022, the dependency on technology

in the world has increased. In reality, it altered how people value and think about

things, particularly in the area of education. In this age of information technology,

parents, instructors, and students have become more conscious of their significance in

Page |1
the pursuit of knowledge. It simplifies the teacher's job while keeping a cheerful

outlook. The learners have easy access to the internet to discover information relevant

to their studies, the professors are integrating technology into their instruction. Those

without knowledge would be left behind as the age of technology for communication

and information (ICT) develops.

New and innovative technologies such as computer technology have

challenged traditional approaches to teaching and learning. Computers provide

opportunities that bring about new approaches and strategies in teaching and learning

(Wambura,2017). Gianna, et al. (2018) cited that Microsoft Office, often known as

MS Office, is a well-liked software collection including a variety of desktop

publishing products. Users of computers have access to a variety of Microsoft Office

suites designed for individuals, small enterprises, organizations, and students. An

essential teaching tool is Microsoft Word. It's crucial to transform unprocessed data

into knowledge. Teachers and students can benefit from using Microsoft Word to

develop fresh, cutting-edge approaches to teaching and learning. Microsoft Word and

the student version of the Microsoft Office suite make it possible to disseminate

instructional materials and conduct systematic practice in schools and universities

more quickly and effectively.

variables. The independent variable is the respondent’s profile of the respondents and

the knowledge level of using Microsoft Office among Grade 12 students is the

dependent variable. The arrow connecting the two variables illustrates the possible

significant relationship between them.

According to Guino, Et.al 2019 The educational system has made it difficult

for both teachers and students to digest very huge amounts of data and present it in an

organized way. The education sector uses Microsoft Office more frequently than other

office suites. Microsoft offers several programs, but Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are

the most often used. The purpose of this study is to evaluate students' Microsoft

program ability at the Grade 12 level.

Significance of the Study

This study will be primarily important to students because it will give them

information on the level of knowledge of Grade 12 students in using Microsoft Office.

Moreover, this will be beneficial to:

Teachers. This will provide facts concerning the status of the knowledge level

of operating computers, which would give encourage them to help the students

by giving apt, explicit, and useful feedback regarding the result of this matter.

Department of Education. This will provide them optimistic understanding

and yawning awareness of the diverse causes that would help each student

who operates the computer. This will be a big help for their further

consciousness about what they will implement in every school, and what will

they do to modern generation student who was part of it.

School Administrators. The result of the study will also be helpful to the

administration as it can be used in developing a framework for the program

which needs implementation involving the Senior High Students for keeping

them aware and well-informed about the knowledge level of Grade 12

students in operating computers.

CHAPTER II

THE REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents a review of related literature and related studies.

(Aspra et. al, 2020), cited that the ability to use a computer and its system

easily is known as computer literacy. It is thought of as the ability to effectively use

computers with various skill levels. Knowing how to use a computer, how it

functions, and how to use it to solve issues are all important aspects of computer

literacy. Being computer literate always refers to little more than the ability to use

certain programs, such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Excel,

Microsoft PowerPoint, and Outlook for a specific task. Microsoft Office apps are one

of the most widely used software suites worldwide, according to Gianan, et al.'s

(2018) research. They are used by virtually every individual or company that uses a

personal computer to conduct everyday documentation and number crunching.

Microsoft Office is the most popular and well-known work program in the world for

studying, personal use, and office work. Even the business-like application iMac users

have nothing that Apple could do to diminish the popularity of the Microsoft Office

package to save the growing demand. Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher,

and Word are all included in Microsoft, which also functions as a word processor.

More time can be spent writing than formatting Microsoft Excel.

According to a study by Smith et al. (2004), high school and college graduates

must be adept in computer abilities such as Microsoft Word, presentation graphics,

internet usage, and email. To develop and strengthen their computer abilities

throughout their careers, students should also feel at ease with computers and

P a g e | 10
information technology. Also, he learned that graduates thought they didn't receive

adequate training in computer usage. Likewise, Richard, (2016) stated that learners

must be proficient in Word documents and typing since many professors need them to

type their homework or make presentations. Depending on the knowledge level, word

processing systems offer several numbers of functions that students may find

beneficial. For instance, a learner might be required to compose an essay using

figures, graphs, and charts giving supporting information for a certain class. In

addition to using PowerPoint, students can utilize other programs to produce the

slides that will go with their communication skills and presentations.

Computers are effective teaching instruments that, when used properly, will

surely affect Ghana's educational system by altering the subjects taught and the nature

of the learning processes in Ghana's Senior Secondary Schools. The use of computers

in the classroom has the potential to encourage independent thought, problem-solving,

and teamwork among students Oladejo et al, (2009). However, the research study by

Bestudio (2019) revealed that despite the regular usage of portable computers in

schools, Australian pupils' knowledge of computers has not improved in the last three

years, according to national results. Additionally, Bulman and Fairlie (2015) noted

that, for educational purposes, schools and families all over the world spend a sizable

sum of money on computers, software, access to the internet, and other technological

advances. In most industrialized nations, technology is widely used in the educational

system. As an illustration, nearly all teaching classrooms in public schools in the

United States have computers with Internet connectivity.

P a g e | 11

as the
knowledge and skill to utilize computers efficiently, with some range of skill levels.
Some
a valuable component of computer literacy is knowledge of how to operate a

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, research respondents, research instrument,

data gathering, and the locale of the study.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers use a descriptive design for this research.

This design was chosen based on the purpose of the researchers which is to describe

P a g e | 12
the knowledge level of using Microsoft Office among Grade 12 students. In this study

design, surveys are used as a tool by researchers to obtain a piece of information to

gain a greater understanding among Grade 12 students as a respondent.

Sirisila (2023) said that descriptive research design entails observing and

gathering data on a certain issue without applying it to infer cause-and-effect

correlations. Descriptive research aims to paint an accurate and comprehensive

depiction of the population or situation under study by describing the links, patterns,

and trends found in the data. The data gathered might be qualitative or quantitative,

and descriptive methods of study can involve surveys, observational studies, and case

research. Although they do not prove cause-and-effect relationships, the results of

descriptive research offer insightful information and guide further study.

Research Respondents

The chosen respondents for this study are the enrolled Grade 12 students of

Tiblac National High School. Out of 51 enrolled Grade 12 students in the said

institution, 4 of them are the researchers in the conduct of this study, and only 45 of

the remaining students participated, therefore, 88.2% of the total population was

recruited to participate in answering the prepared checklist. They were chosen to be

the respondents in this study because the researchers would like to determine whether

these graduating students are well-equipped with the knowledge level in using

Microsoft Office for their entrance into tertiary education.

Research Instrument

In this study, the researcher searches the questionnaires online, the checklist,

to develop the principle of measuring the respondents' perspectives to a series of

statements about the topic. The main tool that will be used in gathering the data for

P a g e | 13
this research is a survey strategy. The researcher personally administered the

distribution of the questionnaires during the available time for the students so that

their classes will not be disturbed. This was done also to ensure that the questionnaire

would not be retrieved promptly.

Data Gathering Procedure

To gather data needed for the conduct of this study, the researchers seek

permission and approval from the School Head of Tiblac National High School

through a letter to conduct the survey. The research instrument utilized was a

checklist ich is approved by the panelist. After the approval from the School Head, the

researchers asked permission from the respondents to answer the checklist provided to

finally gather the data or information needed and it was then analyzed by the

researchers through the use of a statistical tool.

Microsoft Office training programs with diverse degrees of expertise in the

various computer skill areas were mentioned in Carpenter, et. al 2013. The Microsoft

Office skills course teachers have also heard anecdotal reports about that. In

comparison to Excel and Access, they are more knowledgeable about various aspects

of utilizing Windows, browsers, Word, and PowerPoint. Their knowledge diminishes

as the level of the specialized talents rises, even in the areas where they have more

information.

GRAND MEAN

Table 4 shows that the overall computed grand mean on the knowledge level

in using Microsoft Office among grade 12 students is 2.98% which is quantitative and

described as completely moderately aware. It also shows that the respondents are

moderately aware of the 13 statements that they answer. Table 3 reveals also that

P a g e | 18
statement 4 has the highest (mean= 3.68) which is the respondents are very aware of

this statement, followed by statement 6 which is (mean=3.48), statement 2 (mean=

3.00) which mean the respondents are Moderately aware of those statements. Also,

statement 3 and 13 are equal (mean= 2.91), statement 7 (mean=2.71), statement 12

(mean= 2.64), and statement 8 (mean=2.53) which mean all of the respondents are

Moderately aware of this statement. Lastly, statements 10 and 11 (2.46) which means

the respondents are slightly aware of these statements. It means that the respondents

are moderately aware of using Microsoft Office. The respondents had little knowledge

about how to use Microsoft Office for educational purposes.

In terms of Microsoft Office proficiency, three specific levels have been

elaborate namely, Beginner, Intermediate, and advanced. “Basic level of skills is

sufficient to perform using Microsoft Office processing tasks such as producing

routine letters, memorandums, and informal reports. A person with this level of skills

can use Microsoft Office. In intermediate-level skills, it encloses the usage and

creation of a variety of templates, complex tables, and merges: manage table data, sort

and filter merges and also perform basic work with existing macros. The advanced

level of skills required to produce very large, complex formal documents that require

a table of contents, footnotes, endnotes, bookmarks, and other special elements. A

person with this level of skills can use and create a wide range of graphic effects and

has full mastery of macro commands (Computer Skills: Level of Proficiency, 2011,

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion

P a g e | 20
There is no significant relationship between the demographic profile of the

respondents and their knowledge level of using Microsoft Office. Based on the

findings of this study the researcher found that the Grade 12 students are moderately

aware of using Microsoft Office. Among the 45 respondents, results showed that 30

students have beginners’ skills in using Microsoft Office and 15 students only have

intermediate and advanced skills when it comes to using the most basic Microsoft

Office.

Recommendations

The results of this study demonstrate the significance of a computerization

program in a classroom setting. Since Grade 12 students demonstrated full awareness

of using Microsoft Office in this study, the researcher advises the academic institution

to strengthen its support for maintaining ICT proficiency in the educational system.

For the students involved in this issue to understand how they would be using this

application; they must be informed of their current level of proficiency with Microsoft

Office.

The researcher advises the students to use the results of this study as a

foundation for evaluating their general level of ICT literacy. Reading about such a

topic will be advantageous in terms of personal, social, and most notably educational

goals because it will supply important inputs for their appraisal of their specific ability

and for them to fulfill those talents that unquestionably need further progress.

The teachers who are the second parent of the students must inform them

regarding the occurring problem. Guide and motivate them into other meaningful and

school-relevant activities so that they can learn more about the use of Microsoft

Office.

P a g e | 21
Parents should constantly support and motivate their children in their studies,

even if they aren't knowledgeable in Microsoft Office. Students that have a lot of

goals aspire to fulfill them with the help of their parents.

For future researchers, the researcher suggests utilizing the output of this

researcher as a guide at the same time a reference for their study and further

improvement and upholding the content employing studying one specific field of

Using Microsoft Office to further visualize the proficiency involved and to lessen

complexity of data evaluation.

For the school administrator, the researchers recommend that starting in

Grade 7 followed by other year levels the teachers should teach them by operating

computers and by using Microsoft Office so that they will have a knowledge level

before they start at the next level. The researchers believed that knowing basic

computer skills by using Microsoft Office is very important to the students for their

school activity to full fill their school requirements.
