COMMUNICATION

PROCESS, PRINCIPLES
AND ETHICS
ANALYN S. FERNANDEZ, PhD
Professor
TODAY’S LESSON:

A. Definition of Communication
B. Nature of Communication
C. Process and Elements of
Communication
What is Communication?

Communication comes from the Latin

word ‘communis’, which means
‘commons. To be common means “to
come together” or “to commune”- “to
share something in common”.
It is also a means of sharing and
exchanging messages, information, ideas
and feelings for mutual understanding
(Gregoriom, J.C.,2015)
Process of sharing and conveying
messages or information from one person
to another within and across channels,
contexts, media, and cultures
(McCornack, 2014)
THE PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
What are the different
elements of communication?
ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION
SENDER/SPEAKER
The source of information or message,
delivers message to the receiver
The one who presents their ideas to
another person or to a group of people
Also known as the encoder of the message
MESSAGE
The information, ideas or thoughts conveyed by
the speaker in words or actions as in speech and
write-ups, signs, pictures or symbols depending
upon the situation and the nature and importance
of information desired to be sent.
It is the content the sender wants to convey to
the receiver. It can be verbal both written and
spoken; or non-verbal i.e. pictorial or symbolic,
etc.
ENCODING
The process of converting the message into
verbal and/or nonverbal symbols that can be
understood by the receiver of the message
Encoding is the process where the
information you would like to communicate
gets transferred into a form to be sent and
decoded by the receiver
CHANNEL
This serves as the tool or method used in
transmitting the messages or ideas
This is the manner in which your message
or information is conveyed. It may be done
through face-to-face conversation,,
telephone call, video conference, or written
communication (text message, email, letter,
memorandum, report)
DECODING
This is the receiver’s mental processing of your
message into the meaning suggested by the
verbal and/or nonverbal symbols you use as
sender.
Decoding refers to interpreting or converting the
sent message into intelligible language. It simply
means comprehending the message. The receiver
after receiving the message interprets it and tries
to understand it in the best possible manner.
RECEIVER

The recipient of the message, or

someone who decodes the message
The person or group of persons to
whom the information is transmitted
FEEDBACK
This refers to the receiver’s response to your
message.
Feedback is the main component of
communication process as it permits the sender to
analyze the efficacy of the mesage. It helps the
sender in confirming the correct interpretation of
message by the decoder.
Feedback may be verbal forms(spoken or written
words) or non-verbal forms (gestures, sighs, etc.)
CONTEXT
The context is the environment that
sorrounds the communication
This refers to the situation in which the
communication takes place. It includes:
a.Physical context(Environment)—the
location, time of the day, temperature
a.The relationship between the
communicators(Social Context) — you as sender
and the other person as receiver, such as teacher
and student, boss and subordinate, parent and
child, etc.
b.Their respective cultural backgrounds and past
experiences
c.The topic/subject of their communication
NOISE

This refers to any obstacle or barrier

that hinder the speaker from delivering
an effective speech
Noise refers to anything that interferes
with message transmission or reception
