Soil Profile of Andhra Pradesh:

Red Soils of Andhra Pradesh:

 Cover approximately 66% of cultivated regions across the state


 Found primarily in the districts of Rayalaseema
 Poor in nutrients and agricultural value
 Can be divided into six sub-categories: sandy loams containing clay in the sub-soil, deep
loam sand, silty loams, clay/sand loam mixtures, sandy loams known as chalkas, and dubba
soils

Black Soils of Andhra Pradesh:

 Cover around 25% of cultivated areas in the state


 Common characteristics include poor drainage, low nitrogen, and low phosphorous
 High in potash and calcium concentrations
 Divided into two categories: pre-existing in the area and transported from elsewhere

Alluvial Soils of Andhra Pradesh:

 Comprise approximately 5% of soil in the state


 The richest soils in the region and support the most agricultural production across the state
 Found primarily along the Godavari and Krishna delta regions, as well as in the Nellore,
Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, and Guntur districts
 Refreshed by rivers supplying nutrient-rich silt, making deltaic soils the most fertile in
Andhra Pradesh
 Important river systems supplying nutrients to the soils include the Vamsadhara, Pennar,
Krishna, and Godavari river systems

Lateritic Soils of Andhra Pradesh:

 Found in only approximately 1% of the state


 Vary in colour from red or brown to black
 Typically well-drained but have poor fertility and high acidity
 Pockets of these soils are found in the Nellore, Srikakulam, western Medak, Eastern
Godavari, and Visakhapatnam districts
 Can produce oilseeds and some legumes

Skeletal Soils of Andhra Pradesh:

 Lack any nutritional value and do not support plant life


 Infertile and found in heavily eroded regions such as foothills and slopes
 Found in sloping regions of the Cuddapah and Prakasam regions, such as the Badvel and
Jammalamadugu regions of the Cuddapah district.
