Create a provocation area related to the text to activate the 5 senses before reading. This enables students to encounter the theme that links to the text
within the classroom.
• What do they hear?
• What do they smell?
• What do they taste?
• What do they feel?
• What do they see?
Develop an anchor chart on a large sheet of paper to record students’ ideas.
Day 1:
Before Reading: Choose a fiction or non-fiction text to start your reading activity.
Use the Activating Prior Knowledge KWL Chart to find out what students know about this particular text.
Ask questions: What do you know about this text? Can you make connections to this text through personal experiences? Independently or in pairs,
students write down their ideas. Share with the class.
During Reading: Prompt students using the Activating Prior Knowledge Thought Prompt Discussion Cards as they read the text. The Activating Prior
Knowledge Display Poster can be used to support students in unlocking their knowledge through visual representation. Use one or more of the following
activities to initiate further discussion in pairs:
• Use sticky notes to record your ideas.
• Use bullet points to organise your data.
• Paraphrase/summarise ideas to clarify your personal opinions and ideas.
• Sketch your ideas and thoughts about the text.
• Create mind maps to remember important facts and ideas.
After Reading: Ask students to reflect on how they made connections to the text using the Activating Prior Knowledge Reflection Journal.
