Manual of USB Sensor

ScienceCube has developed quick sensor series which support USB connection to computer
directly. Quick sensor series make MBL experiment simple, because it is possible to connect
sensor to computer directly.
But this USB sensor series have lack of simultaneity so you have to consider this and design
experiment.

1. Installation of USB Sensor

Connect USB sensor to Computer.
1) XP version

Select ‘Yes, now and every time, I connect a device’ and click ‘Next’.

Check ‘Search for the best driver in these locations.’ and ‘Include this location in the
search:’.
Select ‘Browse’ button and then you can select the location of drive.

1
Select‘\Drives\USB Sensor’.

It is started to install.

2) Vista version

Click ‘Locate and install driver software’ and wait.

It takes time to find drive in Vista version.

2
If it can’t find the drive you will see the message in the picture.
Select ‘I don’t have the disc. Show me other options’.

And select ‘Browse my computer for driver software’.

Insert CD which is supplied with USB sensor and click ‘Browse’ Button.

3
Choose ‘\Drivers\USB Sensor’ and ‘Next’.

After a while you will see ‘Windows security’ window.

It is because we didn’t register as official Driver of Microsoft.
Choose ‘Install this driver software anyway’.

It is stated to install.

4
You will see this window when the installation is completed.

2. Experiment with Excel sheet

The CD which is supplied with USB sensor includes software which is required for
‘\ActiveX’ folder.
*If you installed ScienceCube Excel program, Studio-II or SC-Logger, you don’t have to do
following procedure.
- ScienceCubeX.OCX : The program controls USB sensor and interface
- SCUSB130.DLL : Software interface program
- prjLock.DLL : Key file
- ScienceCube.REG : Registry information of Sensor name, unit etc.
- WorkSheet.XLS : Excel sheet which uses ScienceCubeX.OCX
* If you use Vista, you have to execute all work as an authority of Administrator.
1) Install ActiveX
Copy ‘ScienceCubeX.OCX’ and ‘SCUSB130.DLL’, ‘prjLock.DLL’ to
‘\Windows\System32’.
Open Command(Dos) windows. Input ‘CMD’ in ‘Start’-‘Command’
(Enter Window key + ‘R’)
Input ‘CD \Windows\System32’ to Command windows.
Move to ‘\Windows\System32’ folder and
input ‘regsvr32 ScienceCubeX.OCX’

5
In this way, you can call ‘ScienceCubeX.OCX’ to any programs.
Double Click ‘ScienceCube.Reg’ to register it to Registry.

2) Experiment with WorkSheet

Copy the ‘WorkSheet.xls’ in any places of your computer.
Then, open this file from Excel.
* There’s difference in performance between computer and Excel version.

6
Select ‘Start’ button then the experiment is started.
The theory of WorkSheet is as following.
If you select ‘Start’ button from sheet, it calls Sheet
‘CommandStartStopButton_Click()’.

(You can see this from ‘Tools’-‘Macro’-‘Visual Basic Editor’)

It calls ‘ThisWorkbook.StartStop’ in this procedure.

You can see Source when you choose ‘ThisWorkbook’ Module.

7
3) Arrange the order of recording USB sensor data
A. With Worksheet
You have to arrange the order of connecting USB Sensor unlike Interface.
Firstly, Connect one sensor what you want to register as ‘CH [A]’. And select ‘Start’,
then select ‘Stop’.
Next, Connect another sensor what you want to register as ‘CH [B]’. And select ‘Start’,
then select ‘Stop.’.
In this way, you can organize the order of Sensor.

8
For example, in above experiment we use two sensors, ‘Humidity sensor’, and
‘Temperature sensor’.
And if you want to recognize ‘Temperature Sensor’ first, disconnect ‘Humidity Sensor’.
And select ‘Start’ then select ‘Stop’.

After that connect ‘Humidity Sensor’ and Start the experiment.

With this progress, Temperature will be collected first.

9
B – With ScienceCube Excel Program

Choose ‘ScienceCube’-‘Experiment’ and Select ‘Start Experiment’. Then it starts to

collect data in random order.
Select ‘Stop Experiment’ then reconnect one sensor to be ‘CH [A]’ when the
experiment Dialog window is activated.
The Experiment Dialog window updates the connecting status of sensor periodically.
