Project Report

Introduction: The AM Receiver Project aims to design and construct a simple AM (Amplitude
Modulation) receiver that can receive and demodulate AM signals. This report presents the details
of the project, including the design, implementation, and testing of the AM receiver.
Objective:
The main objective of this project is to build an AM receiver capable of receiving and
demodulating AM signals within a specific frequency range. The receiver should be able to extract
the audio signal from the modulated carrier wave.
Components Used:
The following components were used in the construction of the AM receiver:

• Antenna: For receiving the AM signals.

• Tuning Circuit: To select a specific frequency.
• RF Amplifier: To amplify the weak incoming signal.
• Mixer: To combine the incoming signal with the local oscillator.
• Local Oscillator: To generate a frequency
for mixing.
• Intermediate Frequency (IF) Filter: To filter out unwanted signals.
• IF Amplifier: To amplify the filtered signal.
• Demodulator: To extract the audio signal from the modulated carrier wave.
• Audio Amplifier: To amplify the demodulated audio signal.
• Speaker: To output the audio signal.

Design and Implementation:

The AM receiver was designed and implemented following the basic block diagram of a super
heterodyne receiver. The antenna collects the incoming AM signals, which are then passed
through the tuning circuit to select a specific frequency range. The RF amplifier amplifies the
weak signal, which is mixed with the local oscillator frequency in the mixer stage. The
resulting mixed signal is then passed through the IF filter and IF amplifier to remove unwanted
signals and amplify the desired signal.
The demodulator stage consists of a diode detector or envelope detector, which demodulates
the AM signal and extracts the audio signal. The audio signal is then amplified using an audio
amplifier and finally output through a speaker.
Testing and Results:
The constructed AM receiver was tested using different AM signals in the desired frequency
range. The receiver was able to receive and demodulate the AM signals successfully. The audio
output from the speaker was clear and audible, reproducing the original audio signal.
Limitations and Future Improvements:

• The AM receiver designed in this project is a basic model and may not have the same level
of performance as commercially available receivers.
• The receiver may have limited sensitivity and selectivity, resulting in some interference
and reduced signal quality.
• Future improvements could include adding additional stages for better amplification,
filtering, and signal processing.
• Integration of digital components for enhanced signal processing and features like
frequency display and memory presets can be considered.
Conclusion:
The AM Receiver Project successfully designed and implemented a basic AM receiver capable
of receiving and demodulating AM signals. The receiver demonstrated the ability to extract
the audio signal from the modulated carrier wave, providing a clear and audible output. While
the project achieved its objectives, further enhancements and optimizations can be
implemented to improve the receiver's performance.
