Assignment-1
Subject: Nonlinear Dynamics and Computations (MA 407/607)
Max. Marks: 20 Submission date: 24th January, 2023

Instruction

1. Mere submission of assignment does not ensure the award of marks. Students
may be called for an interview. Zero mark may be awarded to those who have
inadequate knowledge in the topic.
2. Write your answer with appropriate sentences/language. Provide all calculations
required to explain your answer.

Questions

1. A particle travels on the half-line x ≥ 0 with a velocity given by ẋ = − x, x(0) =
x0 .
(a) Show that the origin x = 0 is a stable fixed point.
(b) Can the particle ever reach the origin in a finite time?
(c) How long does it take for the particle to travel from x = 1 to x = 0?
2. Obtain the analytical solution to ẋ = −x3 for an arbitrary initial condition. Show
that, x(t) → 0 as t → ∞, but the decay is not exponential.

3. Solve ẋ = 1 − x2 , x(0) = 0.

4. Give examples of function f such that ẋ = f (x)

(a) has exactly three semi-stable equilibrium points.
(b) has infinite number of equilibrium points all of which are semi-stable.

5. Let ẋ = f (x) where f (x) = x2 sin2 ( x1 ), x ∈ (0, ∞).

(a) Check whether the above function is C 1 .
(b) Are the equilibrium points isolated?
(c) Determine the nature of all equilibria.
