B. LESSON PROPER
When starting on the web with an online business, the importance of website traffic can be vague.
However, many people begin to realize that the success of their business depends on it.
Website traffic can be defined as the number of people that view your site, the pages that they view,
and the length of time they spend on those pages. When someone goes to your site, that visit is recorded and
any links that individual might click and follow are also recorded. At the end of the day, these numbers are
added up to give you an idea of your website’s popularity.
There’s nothing more helpful to an e-commerce site than getting tons of visitor traffic. The more
visitors there are, the higher the number of potential customers that convert or make a purchase. This number
is called conversion rate. It follows that general percentage norms can provide an expectation of conversions
following “the more, the merrier” notion, but it is by no means accurate and merely getting more visitors for
the purpose of increasing conversion rate is like trying to hit a single target with a fistful of pebbles hoping that
one would hit the mark.
While there are paid services that can bring more visitors to an e-commerce site, there are no
guarantees that these visitors will add to the conversion rate, even if they are targeted or already interested in
your product or service. Paid traffic services like ClixSense (http://www.clixsense.com/?2287488) and Wordlinx
(http://wordlinx.com/?r=46286) get visitors to their clients’ sites by paying them for each visit. Ordinary people
can earn much from these sites as visitors to the client sites if their network of friends is large enough. On the
other hand, businesses pay such services to get more traffic, increasing potential customers.
You can pay for website traffic or you can just rely on unpaid or organic traffic. But if you can maximize
your website, you can get more conversions without necessarily increasing the number of visitors. These
tweaks usually involve the following:
As in any other business, you’ll need to comply with the legal requirements of the country where you’ll
be setting up your e-commerce business. A summary list of the required procedures in the Philippines is as
follows:
1. Register the company name either with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) or the Securities
and Exchange Commission (SEC).
2. Obtain the necessary fees and clearances from the local government units which administer the locale
where the business is located.
3. Purchase special books of account. These are for accounting purposes and will come in handy when
dealing with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) at the end of the year.
4. Apply for a Certificate of Registration (COR) and permanent Tax Identification Number (TIN) for your
business at the BIR.
5. Obtain the Authority to Print Receipts and Invoices from the BIR.
6. Register your business with the Social Security System (SSS) and the Home Development Mutual Fund
(Pag-IBIG Fund), if you have employees.
7. Register with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) for your employee health
benefit privileges.
Note that doing e-commerce is a bit different than running a typical store. It does not necessarily need
a physical front and receipts are not issued in the usual manner with a piece of paper, a ball-point pen, and a
signature. In registering a grocery business for instance, you will be required to have signage where the name of
your business is visible. But that rule came from the old concept of the brick and mortar store. So it can be
confusing and sometimes even frustrating to some e-commerce startups, if the registration system and laws
aren’t up-to-date with digital technology trends. The best way to deal with this is to ask a business lawyer and
those who have “been there and done that.” If registering your e-commerce venture turns out to be too
daunting for you, then the least you can do is account for your income and pay your taxes as a self-employed
individual or someone who earns income apart from a primary source such as employment.

starting-a-business or by consulting with someone experienced in such matters, like an accountant, a lawyer or
someone who already has his own business.
