Line 1 Parents complain that it is difficult to live with teenagers. Then again, teenagers
2 say exactly the same thing about their parents! According to a recent survey, the
3 most common arguments between parents and teenagers are those regarded
4 regarding untidiness and household chores. On the one hand, parents go mad over
5 untidy rooms, clothes dropped on the floor and their children's refuse refusal to
6 help with the housework. On the other hand, teenagers lose their patience continually
7 when parents tell them off for dropping the towel in the bathroom, not cleaning up
8 their room or refusing to do the shopping at the supermarket.
9 The survey, conducted by St George University, showed that different parents
10 have different approaches for to these problems. However, some approaches are
11 much more successful than another others. For example, those parents who yell
12 at their teens for their untidiness, but later clear up after them, have less fewer
13 chances of changing their teens' behaviour. On the contrary, those who let teenagers
14 experience the consequences of their actions are more successful. For instance, when
15 teenagers who don't help their parents with the shopping don't find their favourite
16 food in the fridge, they are forced to reconsider their activities actions.
17 Psychologists say that the most important thing in parent-teen relationships is
18 communication. Parents should talk to their teens, but at the same time they should
19 listen to which what their children have to say. Parents should tell their teens off
20 when they are untidy, so but they should also understand that their room is their
21 own private space. Communication is a two-ways two-way process. It is only by
22 listening to and understanding each other that problems both between parents
and teens can be solved.
Part 4: Use the word given in capitals at the end of each line to form a word that fits in the
space in the same line. Write your answers in the box provided.

Part 3. Read the following passage and answer the questions from 1 to 10. Write your
answers in the numbered boxes.
Learning means acquiring knowledge or developing the ability to perform new behaviors. It is
common to think of learning as something that takes place in school, but much of human
learning occurs outside the classroom, and people continue to learn throughout their lives.
Even before they enter school, young children learn to walk, to talk, and to use their hands to
manipulate toys, food, and other objects. They use all of their senses to learn about the sights,
sounds, tastes, and smells in their environments. They learn how to interact with their parents,
siblings, friends, and other people important to their world. When they enter school, children
learn basic academic subjects such as reading, writing, and mathematics. They also continue to
learn a great deal outside the classroom. They learn which behaviors are likely to be rewarded
and which are likely to be punished. They learn social skills for interacting with other children.
After they finish school, people must learn to adapt to the many major changes that affect their
lives, such as getting married, raising children, and finding and keeping a job.
Because learning continues throughout our lives and affects almost everything we do, the study
of learning is important in many different fields. Teachers need to understand the best ways to
educate children. Psychologists, social workers, criminologists, and other human-service workers
need to understand how certain experiences change people’s behaviors. Employers,
politicians, and advertisers make use of the principles of learning to influence the behavior of
workers, voters, and consumers.
Learning is closely related to memory, which is the storage of information in the brain.
Psychologists who study memory are interested in how the brain stores knowledge, where this
storage takes place, and how the brain later retrieves knowledge when we need it. In contrast,
psychologists who study learning are more interested in behavior and how behavior changes
as a result of a person’s experiences.
There are many forms of learning, ranging from simple to complex. Simple forms of learning
involve a single stimulus. A stimulus is anything perceptible to the senses, such as a sight,
sound, smell, touch, or taste. In a form of learning known as classical conditioning, people learn
to associate two stimuli that occur in sequence, such as lightning followed by thunder. In operant
conditioning, people learn by forming an association between a behavior and its consequences
(reward or punishment). People and animals can also learn by observation - that is, by watching
others perform behaviors. More complex forms of learning include learning languages, concepts,
and motor skills.

Wild Ways by Margery Emerson
Liz:
I have to say that I won't forget this book for a long time. I was hooked from the very first
chapter. The devastating story affected me so much that I don't know if I'll ever feel the same
again. I was close to tears on several occasions. I've got images in my brain now that I don't think
will ever leave me. It's incredibly well-researched and, although it is fiction, is based on
shocking real-life events. I learned an awful lot about things that went on that I never knew
before. Margaret Emerson has a brilliant way with words and I really felt real empathy
towards the characters, although I was sometimes irritated by the choices they made. However,
the parallel story, the part that is set in the present, is not quite so good. I found myself just
flicking through that part so that I could get back to 1940s Paris.

Orchid by Henry Rathbone
Imogen:
This is a delightful novel full of wonderful imagery, a paints a remarkable picture of life in a
distant time and a far-away place. If you're looking to learn about Eastern culture in great
detail, then this is probably not the book for you, as the writer skims over most of the more
complicated aspects of the country's etiquette. The historical aspects are also not covered in
much depth. However, I wonder whether this was the writer's intention. By doing this, he
symbolise the superficiality of the girl's life. She, like the book, is beautiful and eager to please,
but remains too distant from us, the readers, to teach us much. Although I loved the book and
read it in one sitting, the ending was a bit of a disappointment. A story which involves so much
turmoil, in a place where the future is uncertain, should not have a happy-ever-after fairy-
tale ending.

High Hills by Mary Holland
Hannah:
I read this book for a literature class. I know it's a classic, and I did try to like it, but I just didn't
get into it. I kept persevering, hoping that I'd start to enjoy it, but no such luck. The famous scene
out on the moors was definitely the best bit of the book, but even that I found ridiculous when it
is clearly supposed to be passionate. As I approached the end of the book, I figured there must be
some kind of moral to the story, something that I would learn from the experience of trudging
through seven hundred long pages, but there was nothing worthwhile. I don't know why the
literary world sees this book as such a masterpiece. The characters are portrayed as being
intelligent, but they do such stupid things! And as for it being a love story - marrying someone
you don't love and then being abused by them - that doesn't spell love to me.
