MIDTERM EXAMINATION

General Directions:
1.) Answer the following problems on a clean paper with your COMPLETE NAME written above.
2.) Show your DETAILED and CLEAR solution and HIGHLIGHT your final answer.
3.) Filename Format: SURNAME_COURSE&SECTION_MIDEXAM
example:NADAL_BSME1A_MIDEXAM
4.) Submitted output should be in ONE PDF file format ONLY.
5.) Failure to follow the directions will correspond to deduction/s to your total points. Goodluck!

PROBLEMS:
1.) A pump discharges 2377.56 gpm of water to a height of 246 ft. If the
efficiency is 75% and the speed of the pump is 1800 rpm, what is the torque
in ft-lbf to which the driveshaft is subjected?(10 points)

2.) A single stage compressor with initial pressure of 100 kPa and discharge
pressure of 850 kPa has a suction volume of 0.3 m3/s. Determine the percent
decrease in power due to two staging if the compressor process is PV1.33=
C. (10 points)

3.) Compute the required size of the motor in HP to drive a centrifugal pump
that has a design suction pressure gage of 0.75 bar vacuum 750 mm above
the pump centerline and a discharge pressure gage of 750 kPa 7.5 meters
above the pump centerline. The suction pipe is 275 mm in diameter and the
discharge pipe is 175 mm. A hot water with specific volume of 0.001075
m3/kg is pumped up at a volumetric flow rate of 37.5 m3/min. The pump
efficiency is 75%. (20 points)

4.) An ideal three-stage compressor with intercoolers handles air at the rate
of 0.33 kg/s. The suction pressure is 100 kPaa and the suction temperature
is 21°C. Delivery pressure is 5000 kPaa and the temperature of air leaving
the intercooler is 21°C. If polytropic exponent, n=1.2 for all stages, calculate:
(a) the intercooler pressure, (b) temperature of air entering the intercoolers
in °C, (c) heat rejected in the intercoolers in kW, and (d) the total theoretical
work. (20 points)

5.) A double suction, single stage, centrifugal pump delivers 900 m3/hr of sea
water(SG=1.03) from a source where the water level varies 2 m from high
tide to low tide level. The pump centreline is located 2.6 m above the surface
at high tide level. The pump discharges into a surface condenser, 3 m above
the pump centreline. Loss of head due to friction in the suction pipe is 0.80
m and that in the discharge side is 3 m. Pump is directly coupled to a 11750
rpm, 460 Volts, 3 phase, 60 hertz motor. Calculate the specific speed of
pump in rpm. (10 points)

6.) A single-acting air compressor operates at 375 rpm with an initial

condition of 98 kPa and 21°C and discharges the air at 400 kPa. Bore and
stroke are 300 mm and 400 mm respectively. Determine the free air capacity
in m3/sec. Assume 5% clearance and a polytropic exponent of 1.25. (10
points)

7.) A test on a centrifugal pump operating at 1150 rpm showed a total head
of 37.6 ft at a capacity of 800 gpm. Estimate the total head and capacity if
the pump were operated at 1750 rpm. Assume normal operation at point of
maximum efficiency in each case. (10 points)

8.) An air compressor has a suction volume of 0.35 m3/sec at 28°C and
101.325 kPa and discharges to 680 kPa. Determine the amount of power
saved by the compressor due to two-staging. (10 points)
