Intentin Autonomous Network Report WEB

Intent is a formal specification of expectations, requirements, goals and constraints given to an automated system. It describes what the system should achieve without dictating how. Using intent allows networks and operations to evolve autonomously based on data and knowledge. Intent is key to achieving closed-loop autonomy and is baked into the evolution of autonomous networks (AN). As AN levels increase from conditional to highly and fully autonomous, the role of intent grows in importance.

why does it matter?
TM Forum’s member group, the Autonomous Networking Project (ANP), in the Intent in Autonomous Networks
Introductory Guide defines intent as: “The formal specification of all expectations including requirements, goals and
constraints given to a technical system.” An intent articulates what the intent owner expects the system to provide or
do, but not how to do it. Decoupling the “what” from the “how” improves implementation flexibility and ultimately
allows autonomous systems to fulfill the intent based on data and knowledge.

implementing intent
One large European-based operator noted in an interview for this report that recognizing the intent, and trying to
understand what the customer or network planner wants and formally capturing that requirement, was a bigger
challenge than determining whether or not the intent can be handled and, if so, acting on it – at least at the resource
level, where the CSP has been doing a lot of research and development. Work to formally model intents is underway,
as discussed in section 2, but will take time to socialize and implement.

Huawei’s Best Practice

on Intent-driven Networks
The intent-driven approach is a key characteristic of the autonomous
networks. It will make the network operation system be able to adapt
to the business objectives of the operator as well as the expectations
of customers and users. The role of intent is to communicate all these
expectations to the Autonomous Networks.
