Mla Module Scbw2023
Introduction:
The Modern Language Association (MLA) format is commonly used for academic writing in
the humanities. It provides guidelines for formatting essays, research papers, and other
written works. This module will cover the basic elements of MLA format, including in-text
citations and the Works Cited page.
1. Formatting Guidelines:
- Use standard letter-sized paper (8.5" x 11") and set margins to 1 inch on all sides.
- Use a legible font such as Times New Roman or Arial, size 12.
- Double-space the entire document, including the Works Cited page.
- Include a header with your last name and page number in the top right corner of each page.
- Use italics for titles of longer works (e.g., books, journals) and quotation marks for shorter
works (e.g., articles, poems).
2. In-Text Citations:
In MLA format, in-text citations are used to acknowledge the sources of information within
the body of your paper. The basic format includes the author's last name and the page
number(s) of the source.
- Book:
Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Publisher, Year.
Example: Smith, John. The Art of Writing. ABC Publishers, 2022.
- Journal Article:
Last Name, First Name. "Title of Article." Title of Journal, vol. #, no. #, Year, pp. Page
range.
Example: Johnson, Sarah. "The Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity." Environmental
Studies, vol. 25, no. 2, 2021, pp. 50-65.
- Website:
Author (if available). "Title of Web Page or Article." Title of Website, Publisher (if
different from website title), Date of publication (if available), URL.
Example: Smith, David. "The Benefits of Exercise." Health and Fitness Magazine, 2020,
www.healthfitnessmag.com/benefits-exercise.
Conclusion:
Following the MLA format helps ensure that your academic writing is consistent and
properly formatted. Remember to include in-text citations and create a Works Cited page to
give credit to the sources you have used.
